finding yourself

Be original, be yourself, be the leader that I know you are. These are all quotes or sayings that I’ve heard in the past pertaining to how I should act, but how can I be myself if I haven't completely figured out myself yet? How can I be a leader if no one’s taken the time to show me how to lead? Am I supposed to go through life making mistakes and wondering if things should’ve been done or should’ve been said a different way?. How am I, a young black man, that is walking through life hitting walls and being forced to climb them alone supposed to represent himself in a way that’s not hostile but also in a way that’s doesn’t come across as weak?

I think finding my true identity has been a hard task for me, but in a way what I’ve been through in my life so far, has definitely shaped who I will become in the future as a black male trying to beat the odds that were set against me. Being a young man in this world today I feel like the opportunities are endless. In since that I’ve been put in a situation to get a higher education and put in a different atmosphere to branch out and make new connections. My representation of myself should be one that comes across as a passionate dower who creates opportunities for himself. My representation should be different than the others around me not because I feel that I’m better than them, just simply because my dream are different than theirs. The places I want to go may not be the places they want to go. I understand that I’m not just representing myself but I’m also representing my family and my race all in one, which makes it hard at times to not act on how I’m being looked at or treated.

I feel like it’s harder on females then it is males, simply because they aren’t viewed as equals. In the world we live in “the man” is technically speaking the one who works hard, and in my opinion that’s completely wrong and fucked up.

All in all this world is messed, but being yourself is something that doesn’t come with ease. Mistakes will be mad and learning how to address certain situations probably will be easier the second time around. Your representation and how you carry yourself does tell people a lot about how you are and in my opinion can get you further in life so be mindful of it.

Roles

When in a relationship should you be equals or should there be some things that should just be done by the other? Are you equals?: In my opinion, the answer is yes; but some things are gender specific and a man should just do without being asked and there are some things a woman should just do without being asked.

I think a man should automatically have the drive to take care of his family. A man taking care of his family in my eyes looks like protection, keeping food on the table, making sure his family is happy and fulfilled, providing for their needs and being the strong foundation that keeps his family together through thick and thin. In my eyes a man should never be afraid to go to his spouse if he needs help with anything at all. He should have the confidence that no matter what he is going through his spouse will be there to back him up and be his sounding board and second pair of eyes in any given situation. I am not saying that she should have the answers. I am saying that she should be ready and willing to talk it through with him as in a sense they are one and this takes me into the roles that I feel a woman should have.

A woman should also provide for her family but should in some areas let her husband be the head. On those occasions that she does not agree with her husband's decisions, she should share her feelings with her spouse and talk to him about it. She should not go behind his back and change things without him knowing, she should cook most of the time and keep the house clean. If she needs her spouse to do something then she should ask him without hesitation. The woman should keep her man encouraged. She should also be comfortable enough to speak to her man when she is unhappy, randomly wants something or simply feels that something is wrong.

I think that communication is key in any relationship and also the willingness to sacrifice for the other's benefit is also needed as well. Being able to change and grow together as one is really the challenge in relationships. Usually people start off good and fall off the boat when communication is not there or something in the relationship has died out. No one is bold enough to take the lead and sit the other down and actually talk about how they feel, what is going on, what they are unhappy with or simply that they are going through a crisis. All in all no one can be in a working healthy relationship and not communicate and strive together to grow as one because they are equals. Major key alert.

Today’s experience.

Let me tell you what happened to me today. I was walking around in Macys in the mall and my knee started to bother me. I was looking at summer gear like jackets, polo shirts, hats etc… at this point my knee felt like it was on its way to give out, but I stopped stretched a little bit then went back at it. Literally 5 min go by and I’m walking and my knee gives out and I almost fall on the ground in slow motion like Shaq but I catch myself.

My friends were still looking around so I told them I just could not do it anymore, my knee was hurting to bad and that I would be outside siting on the bench when they came out of the store. So as I walk to the bench I see this older white gentlemen sitting on one side of the bench with a Macys bag. He kind of looked like a mixture of between a hobo and a grandfather but that’s not the point. I sit down, minding my own business and he looks at me and ask me “are you a music lover” I being a little bit sketched out reply with I don’t love music but I like it. The man nodes his head and says “do you love rap music” and now at this point I’m thinking this mf is racist. Now I low key have an attitude, I reply with yes I do and ask him the same questions back “are you a music lover” and he replies Love it. I ask “do you love rap music” and he replies with oh yes. At this point I’m thinking he’s probably just trying to be a pest and annoy me, so I ask him who his favorite artist is. He replies with Kendrick Lamar and I’m like oh okay and sit back in realization that this man is dead serious.

He then goes on to say that his favorite song by Kendrick is I love myself, and tells me explicit instructions on where to go on YouTube to see the Saturday night live performance that he did because it was one of the most amazingly performed songs that he has seen in his life.

I tell you this story to say this don’t judge a book by its cover maybe he was an old man just trying to have a conversation with me about something that he loves, or maybe he was just playing a joke on me and had a good laugh after he left. Either way it was a weird experience.

My first college experience

Hi everyone my name is jordain and I am a college student who is studying anthropology. You are probably wondering what I am going to use this degree for well, I would like to use it to travel to different parts of the world and learn about different civilization and understand their culture. But in the meantime, I would like to explore the college life and just have a great experience with great people. I would like to tell you my first semester as a college student. My first day being in college was very exciting, I was so thrilled with everything like the environment, the people and how everyone was communicating. Although I didn’t have classes until the following week after it was still also exciting to be there. My first day of classes made me a little nervous because I didn’t know how everything was going to turn out and how the teachers were going to be. As I got through the first day my nerves began to slowly go down and I got more comfortable with everything around me. As the weeks go by I started to realize that I started to get a little home sick, missing my family’s cooking and just missing the bond that we had and the conversations we would have at night time when me and my brothers use to just play games and talking about random stuff or just what’s been happening with our lives. Thinking about those times just put me in a very depressing mood for a couple days which in the end it took a toll on my grades along with my grades. The first couple of months a lot things I did before college changed on me drastically and I didn’t realize until the end of the semester where everything seems to come down on me rapidly and I got overwhelmed with everything I just wanted to leave but I couldn’t because I came here for one and one thing only. I made a plan and started to get my h/w done and turning extra credit home and started studying more than the usually hours’ people take to study and get on top of my situation. The whole reason I am writing this because I wanted to share that even though something seems tuff you can definitely push through it and succeed at what you do.

my first semester was kind of like yours, but went a little different i as well struggled with missing home and it took a toll on my grades but i didn't get depressed, i realized that no one in this world is going to just hand me a degree, no one was going to just give me my dreams on a platter and tell me to take it. i had to buckle down and really prove to myself that i could do this not for just my family but for me. i started advocating for myself talking to my teachers more, asking for help, and eventually i started to see progress my grades improved and when i had a break i truly appreciated the company of my family more.

Saving money

I have no money at all saved up or put away!

I really want a vehicle before 2018. I want a car or a truck. I know how to save money once i start saving but its been tough to even start. I think its hard for me to save because i want some many things. I was never able to get a job from city hall when i was 13 , 14 nor 15 because of my moms income. Even tho they think my mom makes enough money for me not to have a job at that age, she has alot of bills to pay, so shes always been able to get me what i need, but i wanted a job to get the stuff that i wanted. Now that i have a job i have gotten most of the this i wanted, but now im having a hard time saving money for what i need. I’m hoping to start saving some where in march if i really push my self. I can do it because i determined and really don’t like to wait in the cold for the bus and to walk places when its below 50 degrees outside. I think i should start slow with saving a little amount of money first but im so anxious to get a car that I want to start saving a lot of money at a time so i can reach my goal faster.

I had opened a savings account to automatically take money from my pay check, straight to my savings but that did nothing because i can tranfer the money easily from my savings account to my checkings account. I need to figure some things out so i can get a car so i do not have to take the bus next year, do not get me wrong though, i have nothing against taking the bus, i just do not like standing waiting for it, and hoping that the bus comes on time and hoping i will not be late for something. Also having a car will make me feel like a accomplished a little something so far in my life.

saving money in general is always a tough thing to start in my opinion, because there will always be something that catches your eye that you will want, were humans that's just how we are. i had the same problem i wanted to save my money to buy something but didn't know how to start saving for it. so when i did have money i would try to put one dollar a day away, and not go in it for or count it for a couple months. after i was comfortable doing that i started putting away every five dollar bill i got. eventually it became a habit for me to save money and not touching it until i was sure that i had enough to buy the things i wanted.

Revel the Rebel

“All men are created equal, says the great Declaration, and now a great act attests this verity. Today we make the Declaration a reality….” – Senator Charles Summer. This quote was said just before the senate agreed to admit Hiram Rhodes Revels, the first African American Senator. His election became one step in many in the long struggle for African Americans. The lack of humanity, and hate that was installed throughout those years still scar the country. It is important to remember the heroes who had the courage stand up against the hate, against the evil, against the darkness. Those who promoted peace should always be remembered

Hiram Revels was born in the late 1820s, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was born into society as a free man. In 1844, Hiram was enrolled at a Quaker institute called Beech Grove Seminary, where he received and education. Hiram was appointed a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) in 1845. For the next 10 years, he would travel throughout the south preaching, to freemen and slaves. He would also educate them in reading and writing. He was imprisoned in 1854 for the charge of inciting slaves to leave their masters.

After his imprisonment, Hiram attended Knox College in Kansas for two years; at the time, he was one of the few African American men with a college education. Hiram lived his life with compassion for his fellow man, and a sense of ambition that few could live up to. Though he was a man of peace, he believed in fighting for a worthy cause; he served as a Chaplain in the union army, and helped organize black battalions during the civil war. After the war, Hiram was encouraged to run in 1869, as he was highly educated. He was seated after the vote went his way, 48 to 8.

Hiram’s life should have more attention from people. Hiram not only wanted to educate and further advance African American’s position, but also pursued peace between the divided nation. As a senator, he was very vocal about amnesty for ex confederates, and only required their sworn loyalty to the country. He was able to put his biases aside, for the betterment of the country; which built his reputation as a politician. This shows how altruistic Hiram was, and promotes his respectability as a leader.

The importance of having black history month is to be reminded of these dauntless acts, committed by champions of freedom. They rose above the circumstances, they suffered hate from all around them, and managed to succeed in their fights. Without all of their combined efforts, each person making the necessary sacrifices, we might have a very different America today.

i believe this man was someone who defeated the odds, he was determined and at this time being African American and free was a huge blessing in my opinion. him becoming the first African American senator was a great step for black people to start moving up in the rankings. him giving back his time was amazing and something that i will in my opinion will inspire to be like when i make it. unlike him i believe in fighting for whatever it is you want in life nothing will come easy you will always have to fight for your dreams, fight to become a better person, and fight the temptation to take the easy way out.

The infamous killer whale Tilikum featured in SeaWorld Park passed away January 6th, 2017. SeaWorld trainers, and owners grieve, for they have lost “family”. But in the eyes of many Americans, poor Tilly was nothing more than a murderer, who should have been put out of his misery years ago.

“Tilikum had, and will continue to have, a special place in the hearts of the SeaWorld family, as well as the millions of people all over the world that he inspired”, says CEO Joel Murphy. (CNN news). This maybe be true; however, SeaWorld has undergone a shit storm from the public since the documentary “Black Fish” was release in 2013. Black Fish is a documentary based on the capture and life of Tilikum. But it goes deep into the history of it, and explains more about the life that Tilikum endured that drove him to the point of murder. It exposes the corruption of SeaWorld, and the sick lies they spun into their favor, and implemented them into the minds of many people. Interviews of previous trainers and coworkers that lived the life of a SeaWorld trainer and how blinded they had been to the truth.

The article goes into detail about the death of trainer Dawn Bradcheua, that will forever be connected to Tilikum. Dawn Bradcheua died in 2010 when Tilikum grabbed her by her ponytail and dragged her underwater in front of a live audience. At the time of the accident, SeaWorld spun the media to make it seem like the death of Dawn was in fact her own fault because she shouldn’t have had a long ponytail to make sure their investments were protected. There have been countless trainer - whale accidents at SeaWorld that have gone unnoticed, or proven to have been “trainer error”, when most of the time it is whale aggression. This incident caused the media to turn against SeaWorld. They wanted justice for Dawn primarily, but many Americans wanted to see Tilly released but were sadly disappointed.

SeaWorld Owners have clearly learned nothing from previous accidents, and have become ignorant to future ones. “The Orcas will continue to live at SeaWorld for many years to come, inspiring guest in new and natural ways” said the company on their website. (CNN news) How can a whale inspire in natural ways, in an unnatural environment? The whales have become human entertainment in exchange for what? They are indebted to us and it cost them their lives. Tilikum never asked for a life of capacity. Is he a murderer, or are his actions justified by humane interference?

i want to start off by saying that anything that has in its name killer is more than likely to be a savage, hence the name killer whale. I believe that kidnapping and forcing any animal into your life and taking it from its own world is most definitely not going to look at at you as family. No matter nice you treat the animal, it will always believe that you are the enemy . the animal will always have the memory of it being hurt and captured and forced to change its lifestyle in it head. This killer whale obviously gives 0 fucks. he killed his trainer with a live audience , this whale had to of had a game pln. he had to think this out and wait for the right time and then made his move. i don't for one second think this was an accident smh.

The Story of Emmett Till

Dr. Martin Luther King once said “I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality…… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.” Since we are in Black History Month I would like to discuss the brutal beating of Emmett Till.

Emmett Louis Till was born July 25, 1941. Emmett Till was a 14 year old African American male who grew up in the Jim Crow era. The Jim Crow laws were in the United States history rulings enacted by Southern states and cities, beginning in the 1880s that endorsed segregation between African Americans and Caucasians. The name is believed to be derived from a character in a popular minstrel song. Emmett Till was born in Chicago Illinois. In the summer of 1955 Emmett Till and his family visited relatives in Money Mississippi. He spoke to a 21 year old white women in a grocery store by the name of Carolyn Bryant. Several nights later, Bryant’s husband Roy and his half-brother J.W. Milam went armed to Till’s great uncles house and abducted Emmett Till. Both Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam lynched Emmett Till. They took him away beat mutilated him before hopelessly shooting him and sinking his body in the Tallahatchie River with a 70 pound cotton gin fan tied around his neck with barbed wire.. Three days later, Emmett Till’s body was discovered and retrieved from the river.

Emmett Till’s body was returned to Chicago. Emmett Till’s mother insisted on a public funeral service, with an open casket so as to show the world the brutality of racism in the South. Emmett Till’s mother’s decision focused attention not only on American racism and the barbarism of lynching but also on the limits and susceptibilities of American democracy. Tens of thousands attended his funeral or viewed his casket, and images of his mutilated body were published in black-oriented magazines and newspapers, rallying popular black support and white sympathy across the U.S. Penetrating examination was brought to bear on the lack of black civil rights in Mississippi, with newspapers around the country critical of the state. In the trail Bryant and Milam both was found innocent.

Thus, the murder of Emmett Till became one of the leading struggles in the American Civil Rights Movement. The main suspects were acquitted and later admitted to the murder.

A Woman made this Man

“Woman, can’t live with them. Can’t live without them”. This is one of the most accurate quotes that my principle has ever said to me. If you were like me I was blessed to have my mother in my life as a child and still in my life now. I could imagine where I would be without her guiding and teaching me through this walk of life. Where would I be if she had no rights?

In sojourner truth the writer says “I have borne thirteen children, and seen them most all sold off to slavery”. The pain and agony this woman must’ve went through over and over again, watching one of her children taken away from her and then being sold is Unfathomable. This woman really has been through a lot being help a captive and neglected in a since that you’re not even a person.

The writer’s message I believe is directed to the white men that didn’t give her any type of respect, saying” And ain't I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! I could have ploughed and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man- when I could get it- and bear the lash as well!” I think this means that no matter how much of a guy she acts like she still won’t be able to get there respect in a since because she is a slave and on top of that, not just a slave but a black slave who’s a woman.

There are multiple things in this letter that shoes us that she is emotional, not just emotional but passionate about not being considered a woman in the eyes of the white man. The pathos in this letter is obviously the strongest when she goes off on how she can do all these things and still not be considered a woman by the men. The logos is how consistent she is about defending her rights and having a comeback for everything someone has said. Last but not least the ethos, the ethos that I feel is how she portrays the image of a strong black female who doesn’t take everyone’s crap.

Like I said earlier the phrase “Woman, can’t live with them. Can’t live without them”. Is honestly the perfect statement. No matter how bad a female treats you I was touch to always show her respect and in the end you won’t have anything to worry about.

“lets go home”

In the wizard of Oz Dorothy clicked her heels together and said “there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home and poof she was home”. Dorothy was home from her wild adventure, in the same aspect NBA star Dwayne wade has left the Miami heat and has heated for his home town of Chicago, playing for the Chicago bulls. Dwayne wade has established himself as one of the most dominate, well executive, popular shooting guards of all time.

After the 13 seasons Dwayne Wade has spent with the team who has essentially helped craft this amazing reputation/ legacy, the Miami heat’s offer was simply just not enough to keep Dwayne wade in Miami, being the superstar he is. Tim Reynolds an AP basketball writer wrote in his article Coming home: Dwayne Wade leaving the Heat for the Bulls that “Wade will sign a two-year deal with the Bulls, one that will pay him about $47 million. Miami offered $40 million over two years for Wade to stay in the uniform that he's worn his entire career, the one in which he was an All-Star 12 times, a champion three times and the NBA Finals MVP in 2006 when his rise to superstardom was just truly beginning”. This 7 million increase with the chance to be home would obviously be the better deal for Dwayne wade in the since that’s why he took the deal.

As a fan of the Miami Heat and my all-time favorite player Dwayne wade leaving the Heat I was a little heart broken, but ill follow my favorite player where ever he goes. When the rumors first started to go around I was like there is no way that Dwayne Wade would do that he loves Miami he would never turn his back on them that’s his home away from home, then the rumor started to get bigger and bigger and then the next thing I knew his actual home Chicago was on the map. At this point it was like a tossup weather he would go or not because that’s his actual home. When the deal was closed and it was set in stone I was a little upset but at the same time I was wondering how the Chicago bulls organization would affect Dwayne Wade’s all-around game.

Thus, in my opinion “there’s no place like home” is won of the most accurate statements one could say in regards to being comfortable somewhere else. I used rhetoric to show that the logos in this article was Dwayne wades choice to go back to Chicago and continue his career there. The pathos is how this decision affected me in my decision to reinvest on some d-wade gear

oh yeah its football Sunday but not any football Sunday it super bowl Sunday the falcons play the pats and you already know how that goes. if you dont here is a little preview. you watch the game closely but watch the commercials even closer. the pats are going to win and if you dont know who the pats are you can go jump... the pats stand for the patriets. full name the new england patriots. my money is on them because through out the years that tom brady has been in the super bowl hes been a beast. in my opinion football is a sport that you work out harder then any other sport. not to mention the physical wear and tear your body takes every time you make a tackle, make a hit, make a block, ect. if you wish to loose your money... it goes down in the dms so hmu and we can make your dreams come true and your money can be in my pocket

today

The fear of my future is the only things keeping me grounded. The fear of not being able to give back to the people who fought for me and stood by my side through right or wrong and through thick or thin. so it starts with today, i refuse to give up and be just another person in my this world who is doing nothing with their life but maintaining and barley getting by. I step back from right now and reminisce on my past and wonder how, just how in the world did the people in my life actually have the will power to make the sacrifices that would eventually get me to where i am today.In my opinion this life is worth living and i believe you only get one shot at it.So i promise, ill make the best of it.

I like sports. My favorite sports are basketball and football. My favorite teams are the Bills and the Vikings. My favorite player is D-Wizzle. I also like to play sports. I’m pretty bomb at basketball and football.

I don’t really know how I feel about this course. I feel like its up in the air rn. It should be interesting to keep a blog, but also a sort of hassle. I hope that my feelings about this change, and it becomes more interesting to me.
