Where do Filipinos lack in Media & Information Literacy Skills?

With the boom of social media, everyone wanted to hop on the trend and stay connected with their family and friends. The purpose and intent of social media were of course for faster and easier connectivity with everyone. But now is this really the case?

Fake accounts, fake advertisements, defamation, illegal acts through the net - it seems that the trends with Filipinos right now are scamming and deceiving others.

Recently, over a thousand pages from Facebook were shut down due to their illegal business, fixing and scamming in relations with passport appointments. These acts are punishable by law but why do people still engage themselves with these fraudulent activities? Is it because of impatience? Filipinos would rather break the law and commit with under the table activities rather than applying ahead of time so that when their appointment comes they are right on schedule?

If we want change, it must start with ourselves. One should not expect change within this counter if they themselves would not work for it.

How Media Have Affected You?

1. Cognitive

Last summer break, I have been obsessed with watching educational videos. With the type of animation that they produce makes it seems fun to learn more about the world we live in. TedEd? Amazing. I really, really liked their “Myths from Around the World” playlist. Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell? Cool. Although the type of animation kinda creeps me out a bit. The channel that I visit most is probably Great Big Story. They focus on the little things and I can feel the ‘realness’ in the videos they put out.

2. Belief

I don’t think that the media greatly influenced my belief. Still, my family, friends, and the people that I interact with are the ones who have a great impact on me.

3. Attitudinal

In terms of attitude, I try to be as proper that I can be. With the rise of social media, you never know what is out there. Millions of people are carelessly spitting out their words without proper thought and causing more trouble than there is. With those set as an example, I try to avoid doing those things and be more mature in the situation. After all, those are only words and they only put meaning into my life when I let it. ((lowkey I find it annoying when people share a lot of mindless posts and then I see it on my newsfeed, grr.))

4. Emotional

As someone who aspires to be a Vet someday, posts that feature animals being harmed definitely makes me question on why some people are cruel to animals. People who abandon their pets, harm them or don’t care for them, and seeing it online makes my heart hurt. Why get a pet in the first place when you’re not going to be for them? They are not for show, they have lives too.

5. Physiological

You know the scene when you’re about to sleep and you’re doing your last minute scroll on your timeline? And then suddenly one of your friends shared a post that contains a jump scare? THAT PART. I HATE IT. Couldn’t sleep, hate rate beating fast, and covering myself with a blanket to pass time. :(

6. Behavioral

Adopt, Don’t Shop! Here in the Philippines, there are a lot of strays found in the streets. And with the power of media, we should give the other dogs a chance, those who got abandoned in the shelters and those who have no homes, regardless of what breed of pet it is, they should have a forever home. I learned this when I got a dog 3 years ago and I would like to send this out to people who are planning on getting a pet!

Power of Media

Media has the power to change people. The way they look at life, their actions, even themselves. With the vast growth of technology, it has come to the point where we don’t even know what to believe anymore. Fake news, defamation, cyberbullying, they are everywhere. As the audience, we should take account of what we see and don’t let these affect use immediately. Research first to see if what you’re seeing, hearing about is true.

The author observed through the thousands of Filipinos who migrate have changed and are starting to bring the culture they have adapted back to the Philippines. The author wanted us to realize that we needed to find our identity back. We needed to bring back our pride and faith in being a Filipino.

4. How is the information made?

The information was made when the author met with her friend Arturo Valdez when they arranged a meeting with the Chinese embassy officials. Arturo said that he wants to rekindle Filipino pride and faith in a forgotten heritage, our maritime consciousness.

Media Convergence: The Good and The Bad

Media convergence affected the print and broadcast industry by a lot. Through the decline in printing sales in newspapers and magazines, to the broadcast viewership, they knew that they had to adapt to the consumer's wants and lifestyle. With technology offering accessibility and convenience, media convergence was bound to happen.

From the students' perspectives, media convergence is the easiest and fastest way to get information. Phones, tablets, and laptops are readily available to supply their needs. They can access journals and articles online without having to step foot outside the house. Announcements are posted and shared by hundreds in an instant.

By looking at screens, we overlook the negative side of media convergence. We lose interest in newspapers, magazines, and radios. Remember K-Zone? The magazine that we all loved when we were a child. Comics, stories, cut-outs of our favorite characters, truly it was a child's treasure. Now, children will never get to experience those things. More and more of them would rather play in their tablets rather than read.

There's always two sides of a coin. Media convergence may be beneficial but we should always look back and appreciate on what we had in the past.

“On the way!” People want convenience. Instead of finding hard copy maps of places you want to go to, apps like these make it far easier to navigate. With just a tap on the screen, it will now show you how to go to your destination and the fastest route to get there. In the past, people often resort to printing out maps and ask the locals. Though of course, that is also a reliable method of navigation since you are asking the people who live in the area. From experience, whenever my family and I go on a road trip, we print out copies of maps of the destination, in case of loss of cellular coverage, and rely on GPS tracking devices. In that way, we can be assured that we are going in the right direction. If anything else goes wrong, there’s no harm in asking people where to go!

hello, hi! my name’s jewel and it’s nice to meet you whoever you are!

My media lifestyle revolves around my iPhone & MacBook. I cannot survive school without these two. Not only are they here for entertainment but they are my source of knowledge outside my home and school. News? It’s there. Class suspensions? It’s there. Even birthday reminders, it’s there!

I’m a big fan of BTS if you didn’t know. It’s really hard to communicate to artists especially if they are not local. Media has been my savior! It made me discover my love and adoration for the band and keeps me updated on what they are up to. (peep! follow them on twitter and stream fake love on youtube!)

Media habits are probably non-existent except for my phone. I’m not a big fan of televisions and newspapers but I do get my daily intake of news (even fake news, gosh!) on my social media. Though I try to make it a habit to watch the news before dinner, does that count? I hope so.

Media preference would still be, of course, social media. I can’t help it! It’s the most convenient one out there. I can take my phone and read whenever I want, with the exception of school hours of course.

“Think Before You Click”

For one to be able to know that they are media and information literate, one must be able to analyze, evaluate, and recreate the right type of content. With media interconnecting with other types of media, it is hard to know which information to assess.

Being a media and information literate, I once had come across a post wherein a famous facebook page posted a supposed to be ‘funny’ picture that making fun of the disabled. I quickly scrolled down the comments and it’s disheartening. Most of the comments were just people tagging their friends along with laughing emojis. Only a few people defended the person and to see that a lot of people encouraging that kind of behavior online is sickening.

I know that I still have a lot to learn to be an MI literate, which is why I really go by the saying “Think before you click.”.
