Final product for what I did for Professor Agostino Dessi’s International Venetian Mask Making course in Florence Italy this summer.

It is a cat skull and is currently hanging on my wall at home. I can kind of wear it, but it is a little awkward with the eye sockets smashing into you own eye sockets. Oh well.

Now that I know the process of how to make these masks, I will probably make more of them. Clay and plaster are on the way. I’m not going to stop doing the felt masks, I just going to pause on making them for a bit due to lack of studio space (and space to do the actual wet felting process). I do have animals all picked out though.

Last few steps in finishing the paper cat skull mask. I used the crackle method, which is caused by a thick layer of paint reacting to a equally thick layer of dried glue. I’m not sure of the exact science of this, but it still looks awesome in the end.

The final bit is applying the color. Professor Dessi wanted to show me how to make things look old and antique, which works well with a skull. The color is made with a combination of wax, mineral spirits, and the Italian equivalent to asphalt. Brown oil paint works as well, but doesn’t have the same effect.

The first 10 steps of making a traditional Venetian paper mask loosely portrayed in photo form. I of course didn’t use a traditional subject. Instead of the traditional (and boring) human face mask, I did a cat skull.

All four finished lizard masks worn by me. The top picture/mask is the first one I did and the bottom mask was the most recent one.

I tried to give them slightly different colors with the needle felting aspect (aside from the fabric color) and different jaw 'expressions'. I think I was pretty successful.

Sorry about the lackluster posting in a long time. It's been rather busy and I've been making masks at break neck speeds. I've finished another hyena mask and working on the other two, and I finished all four lizard masks. Yaah!

I've just posted images of my finished hyena mask, and I will be posting images of the finished lizards hopefully this weekend.

Finished second hyena mask for my BFA project. This one is slightly bigger than the first one, and I was playing around with a different color scheme than the other one. More gray this time.

As for the other hyena masks, I'm currently working on them at the same time.
