“Well, I definitely appreciate it. Makes you the best kind of person,” Benjy said with an easy smile in her direction. He didn’t mind being interrupted like this. Regardless of who had claim over the spot, being her regular or him beating her there today, he was more than happy to share it with her. This was his time, too. No need for serious work or focus. An idle morning that he deserved every once in awhile. Every day would be another matter, but he’d definitely take this.
“There’s a kind of equivalent on the Muggle side, too,” Benjy replied. “I’m not saying it’s the right way, but we’re definitely not alone in having those future determining exams. It seems to be an unfortunate standard.” He tucked his hair behind his ears and flipped his book over in his lap, holding the page with his knee and fully committing to putting it down for the time being. “I wouldn’t quite call it that in the figurative sense, but literally, I suppose. I’m working at a research lab. It should be pretty cool, actually. I have a good amount of opportunity to do some of my own work along with working for some of the top minds in research. It should give me great experience if nothing else.”
He missed her slight cringe over Quidditch, not having thought of the emotional side of it. The sport had always been black and white for him, win or lose seemed pretty simple, and he wasn’t looking to add to the sting nor was he expecting it to happen. “Ah yes, my mistake. I forget there isn’t a true end for you. It’s still admirable dedication what with how busy I’m sure you are in all areas with things wrapping up.”
Jeanette hadn’t imagined that she had any interest in company when she’d left out on her run, but honestly, Benjy was a breath of fresh air and she was glad for the company. She’d carefully spent most of her time among her teammate's people who would understand how she was feeling and not still have Hufflepuff victory hangover happiness. She felt secure though with Benjy that she’d enjoy herself but not get into the logistics of the game which was a little relief. “Well, then I feel just as bad for the muggles as us.” Jeanette waved her hand dismissing her own thoughts and complaints because if she were going to spend her time protesting something or pushing for a change it certainly wasn’t going to be for a shift in exams. “I suppose there must be some wisdom in what appears as lunacy. If it is so universal.” Her head leaned to the side as she listened to him, grinning as he went along with his explanation. “Seriously? That sounds great. I mean, it sounds like a good job but if you can get some of your own work in front of people like that. I think magical summer is a pretty apt description. If you can spend your free time doing what you want and what you love there’s nothing better, right?”
“We all have to have that one thing, right? And we can’t all be geniuses. And, luckily the Arrows don’t care at all about my NEWT scores and the fall back plan of worst-case scenarios would hire me no matter them, because it would mean proving them right that I should just come home. Not that I’m letting that happen. Wrapping it up....It all feels so final which is--I don't know it feels weird. And I’m still not sure if it’s a good weird or bad.”
