Devambez presented the Chatelet Theatre looking down from the top, enabling him to merge into one compact mass both the spectators in the upper circles and those in the stalls, without featuring the stage itself. In marked contrast to the regular audience at the Paris Opera, who went to see and be seen, these patrons have come together just for the pleasure of the music, and without any social considerations.

Enchanting Fairytale-Inspired Paper Sculptures by Malena Valcárcel

With no formal training, Spanish artist Malena Valcárcel (previously featured here) has constructed a series of book sculptures inspired by nature and literature.

Valcárcel’s abstract creations contain story-telling and whimsical qualities, which are meant to be recreations of illusory sceneries, habitats, and excerpts of our favorite fairytales and folklore. Enchanting backdrops of flowers, butterflies, small cottages, castles, and magical trees in the forest grace her work.

Although Valcárcel’s work is ethically constructed, Valcárcel’s purpose for using recycled materials is to accentuate the charm and authenticity of her sculptures.
