Chaos of the City

In the chaos of the city, I find a freedom. Freedom to scream, shout, be myself…. Be one with the earth, the sky, with humanity. I am a part of something so much greater than my insignificance. That makes me feel important. My link in humanity’s chain through the brushing of a bag or the pausing of a step as to not run into the next person empowers me. It makes me feel as though if I were not there in that moment in time that person’s day could have gone completely different. The lights, horns, sirens, shouts, laughter—all things demanding attention… The movement, the ebb and flow of people across broad avenues and through turnstiles trying to make their trains on time flow like the blood through my veins…

In the chaos of the city, there is peace… Peace of mind that if you can carve out your own little space, you will not be bothered. Catnaps on the A train… Minute corners against the edifice of a building as time, and people, rush by… Urban cocoons of serenity that provide a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle.

In the chaos of the city, there is life. Carpe diem! Moments seized at every opportunity. The invigorating rush of asserting your individuality among thousands of others who are also doing the same. The honking of the horn from the gypsy cab… The pushing through just to be the closest to the curb at the “Do Not Walk” sign… The straphanger’s sprint down the platform as the doors are closing to be in a subway car that is less crowded…

In the chaos of the city, there is humanity… Lovers kiss and hold hands as if they are the only ones in the world. Close friends chat and catch up at a sidewalk café. A young man helps an elderly lady with her groceries… The laughter of children playing in the effervescent spray of a broken fire hydrant…

In the chaos of the city, I feel at home. The smells, the languages, the dialects, the food, the art, the music, the expression, all take me to a nostalgia that cannot be found in the countryside… The city is home.
