Welcome to jellyfish of the day! Here, we will do our best to post a jellyfish every day, ideally with fun facts and articles to go along with it. Mod is unfortunately not an expert, just really likes jellyfish. Attempting to run on a queue, we'll see how that goes.

Got a favourite jellyfish? Think you know of one we haven't heard of? Want to brighten our day with an awesome jelly? Feel free to send it in via asks, submissions or DM's! if it's not on the blog yet, we'll get it posted! An image description alongside any pictures you send is appreciated, but not required.

We won't be using fancy fonts or colours, because we want the blog to be accessible and we often don't have the energy to do both plain text and coloured/font versions.

Only rule is, don't be mean to jellyfish, mod, or anyone you see on the blog! Have fun!

Today's jellyfish is the beaded comb jellyfish!

The Euplokamis (apparently also called the sea gooseberry) is less than an inch long. It has only two tentacles. There has been very little research done on this type of jellyfish, because they are uncommon.

Today's jellyfish is the moon jelly!

Aurelia aurita can reach up to 2 feet wide, and have been to space! (Source [link]) Instead of moving through the water, moon jellies primarily swim to keep themselves near the surface. (Source [link]) With care, research and some specialised equipment, moon jellyfish can actually be kept as pets! It's mod's dream to have pet jellyfish one day...

Today's jellyfish is the lemon jelly!

Aegina citrea are small jellies, about an inch wide. Their primary food source is other jellyfish. They seem to not be very well known, as it was very difficult to find information about them.

Today's jellyfish is the lion's mane jellyfish!

The Cyanea capillata is one of the largest known species of jellyfish. Most jellies have round bells, but lion's manes have eight-lobed bells that can be over 2 metres wide, while the tentacles can reach over 30 metres long.

Hii (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶) currently my favourite jellies are Japanese sea nettles (chrysaora pacifica) They look so pretty, I honestly don’t know anything about them haha

I saw them a few weeks ago in an aquarium and took these pictures:

The Chrysaora pacifica's bell can reach up to 12 inches in diameter, and the tentacles can be up to 10 feet long. They begin developing stripes when they reach about 2 centimeters wide. (Source [link])

Today's jellyfish is the mauve stinger!

The Pelagia noctiluca has four oral arms in the centre and eight tentacles around the edge of the bell, the latter of which can be up to 3 metres (nearly 10 feet) long. Their scientific name can be translated to mean "ocean night light" (pelagia from pelagos, meaning sea, nocti meaning night, and luca from lucere, meaning to shine. {source 1 [link], source 2 [link]}). Not sure why we don't call them that, instead of "mauve stinger." (Source [link])

Today's jellyfish is the Portuguese man o' war!

Also known as a bluebottle, the Physalia physalis is considered the only species in its genus and family. They are not true jellyfish; each one is actually a colony, similar to how corals are made up of individual organisms.

Today's jellyfish is the cannonball jellyfish!

Cannonball jellies (Stomolophus meleagris) are the main food source of leatherback sea turtles, which are endangered. They have 16 arms which are fused together, as opposed to typical jellyfish tentacles. (Source [link])
