like i talk to one of my closest neo friends on skype and she's also in my guild and we literally talk like strangers on the boards because it's so hard to communicate with a personality when every word you say is being watched

It would, but as an alternative sometimes I just continuously fire off totally random chat lines during play.  Most people ignore it or express brief puzzlement or hostility, but sometimes someone will start doing it back and we have a good old time.  I have made friends this way.
