“Mgbe onye ji kuni bu ututu ya” - When you wake up, that is your morning
An installation that I created where I talked about my perception of power. Through the different facets of my identity, my Nigerian (Igbo) culture, my queer identity and my humanity, I wanted this personal work to convey my own nuanced understanding of power.
Using “Ikenga” from Igbo culture I embody the treasured totem’s ability to manifest power and one’s own success while including my previous work “Big Man” and Emilio Vedova’s “Image of Time” an abstract and emotional visualisation of time as non-linear and a harbinger of transformation.
I believe that my centre, my source, is a burning fire. It motivates and fuels my dreams, ambitions, creativity and enables my passionate approach to the things I love. I layered what I believe is my “source of power” over the fabric-litho print to create the installation. I included a voice recording (as a way of journaling) I did a while back where I was expressing how I had felt “powerless” and “stagnant, to convey a nuanced message.
I believe that one cannot have power without feeling powerless.
This work has a lot of layers and I really fuck with that, and I’m especially proud of this mode of meaning making for me. I’m getting more into my groove artistically, even trying lithography for the first time!
