From what I’ve heard, Will Smith’s father actually left him. This wasn’t entirely scripted. Will went off on his own rant, and the hug at the end was genuine.

His character was just supposed to shrug off his dad leaving again and he starts to but then Will goes off script. That whole speech is coming entirely from him. The hug at the end is also genuine, actor to actor not character to character.

There is honestly never one day when you're not on my mind. Even though I've said 'goodbye' to you a million times, I always seem to go back. Not this time though. It's really goodbye. You still might be on my mind but eventually I know that you won't anymore. I don't know when that is but when that day comes, I'm going to thank you. Thank you or all the good times that we've had with each other even though it seems like you forgot then already and also, thank you for all the times when you treated me like crap and make me stronger. You didn't deserve the way I treated you towards the end but I also didn't deserve the way you treated me. I deserve to be treated with respect which is something you are incapable of doing I've come to realize. Goodbye.
