“Best friend intuition, right?” he commented with a knowing look. Like beacons, they didn’t need to be near each other to realise when one needed the other. Noah hadn’t had it with anyone else, he still couldn’t figure out why it was just Audrey, maybe it was because she had been such a permanent fixture in his life that somehow his brain worked normally around her. At her question of his own well being all he could do was shrug. “As per usual, Aud. Work, routine, work, routine- no, I added another client to my portfolio, some new start up in L.A and let me tell you, they are like babies in the technology world. I could hack their systems within 46.7 seconds.” he said with a proud smile.
It wasn’t too long a drive, it took precisely seven minutes and twenty three seconds to arrive and he pulled the car into park. He passed across the bag to her and turned in his seat. “Are you okay?” social cues were a puzzle to him, but he’d learnt over their years together that he needed to ask, especially when the words bad day were mentioned.
Audrey laughed into the bag of tacos at Noah’s description of the new company he added. “Are they babies or are they dinosaurs that just don’t know how to use internal tech blockers to their benefit?” She eyed him in question. “Either way, I’m glad you got another company added to your portfolio. The more companies you get the bigger your tech empire can grow!” She nudged her shoulder to his as she took a mouthful of taco. (No pun intended, but feel free to have this one free of charge.)
Audrey knew Noah wasn’t exactly keen on personally emotional talks, so for him to go out of his way to ask first about it and put himself in a spot where he was more than likely going to be uncomfortable meant a lot to her. It was how she knew somebody meant a lot to him as she’d seen him do it with his mom and, of course, Riley before. It was also why she tended to be more up front and blunt with him when it was him doing or not doing something that made her upset. Unlike the rest of the world Noah didn’t take offense to it. It helped him understand, a tangible way of interrupting emotions.
Swallowing her bite, she contemplated how she wanted to answer the question. “So, I’m training this new guy - Bryan - and I just am getting this vibe from him that he is all about himself and only people like him. Straight, white men.” She took another bite. “And, of course, I have nothing to go off as prrof aside from my feeling. But he just hasn’t taken to anything I’ve tried to teach him. He questions everything and doesn’t take orders from me. I don’t know.” Audrey shrugged unsure if she just sounded like a brat. She couldn’t place it, but she felt like her trainee was judging her.
