Emily was always too nice. So nice it hurt. And Hanna never really felt like she deserved to have it in her life. The comfort from Emily’s hand was as always, nice and she almost found herself protesting when Emily switched back to the steering wheel. Her skin still tingled where her fingers had graced. It was all confusing. “Oh yeah? Pam still difficult to buy for? I feel I should gift her something myself, amazing that she still speaks to me when my own mo- when Ashley literally crosses the street to avoid me.” she commented, biting her lip slightly. It still hurt, even after this long. It pained her that Ember most likely would never get to know her grandma.
“Ember will love it, especially experiencing her first ever mall Santa. Let’s just hope it’s one that doesn’t smell like weed and has a scratchy, moth bitten beard and takes a smoke break by the grotto.” she said with a huff of laughter. She had gone last year, whilst heavily pregnant and the sight had her almost in hysterics, at seeing so many parents in shock. But now she was one, she also wanted the magic.
“You’re an angel for offering to take her. And there isn’t anyone else besides her father I trust more. So I might just take you up on that offer.”
“Extremely difficult to shop for.” Emily sighed. “Christmas is supposed to be magical, I don’t know, I just really get into the holiday and gift giving spirit. I get her something with meaning, but she’s more into practical gifts, so I’ve been working on practicality rather than being sentimental. It sounds ridiculous, I know.” Emily sighed. No matter what came her way, Emily was always an optimist, dreamer, and mesmerized by festivities. Christmas time always brought that out of her. “My mom has always loved you. It’s Ashley’s loss.” Emily murmured as she rested her hand back on Hanna’s leg and patted her gently.
Their high school years had been tough with Hanna choosing to move over to the Southside, it was upsetting that Ashley still hadn’t found it inside herself to accept that part of her daughter. Emily hated that and wanted nothing more than for her mother to accept it, she understood what it was like to be unaccepted by a loved one, she hoped and prayed that some day Hanna would receive love from her mother.
“Oh my gosh, it’s going to be so adorable.” Emily cooed. She couldn’t help but laugh at the comment about the Santa smelling like weed. It was one of the many things Emily loved about Hanna, her sense of humor and silly remarks. “Yeah, for everyone’s sake, let’s hope it’s not like that. Or like the drunk Santa from Miracle on 34th Street, that’s the worst.” She mused.
“Any time. I am honored and as her godmother, I intend on keeping her safe and all of that. That’s what I’m here for, any extra help to both my goddaughter and her mom.” Emily stated proudly. They pulled up to the mall, and they got lucky with finding a spot super close to the door. “I think today’s our day, ladies.” Emily announced happily as she parked the car.
