[Synopsis] Deconstructs the 'black box' of North Korea through the raw testimonies of three defectors. By tracing their disparate motives and trajectories, the work transcends conventional migration narratives to interrogate the invisible ‘gravity’ of North Korean society and the complex psychological layers of the three defectors throughout their process of displacement.

[Bio] ‘sawe’ is a media artist collective comprising Uisuk Jeong, Jaehwan Lee, Haim Gong (Jangho Kim), Jeho Park and Youngjin Seo. Coming from diverse backgrounds and genres—including live-action video, graphics, and sound—the group investigates the convergence of multidisciplinary media to expand the boundaries of sensory experience and narrative structure.

A sound installation in which decontextualized “sound event” fragments flicker independently across eight channels, forming temporary scenes.

Each iteration produces slightly misaligned combinations of sounds through algorithmic playback.

8대의 스피커가 비정형으로 배치되어 관객은 중심에 서게 된다. 앞·뒤·좌·우·대각선의 8개 방향에서 독립적으로 제어되는 소리가 관객의 위치에 따라 다르게 들린다.

Eight speakers are arranged in an irregular configuration, with the audience positioned at the center. Sounds independently controlled from eight दिशions—front, back, left, right, and diagonals—are perceived differently depending on the listener’s position.

숏폼 미디어 피드의 네모난 그리드 레이아웃에서 아이디어를 얻었다. 서로 관련 없는 단편적인 영상들이 끊임없이 이어지는 모습이 마치 분절되고 파편화된 내면의 풍경과 닮아있다는 생각에서 출발한 작업이다.

8대의 스피커는 각기 다른 시간·공간·맥락의 소리 파편을 개별 사건처럼 발화한다. 소리는 흩뿌려지고, 느슨한 군집을 만들었다가, 미세한 오프셋과 규칙에 의해 다시 해체된다. 때로는 우연히 결합해 하나의 장면(surround)을 이루지만, 그 결속은 오래 지속되지 않는다. 관객은 이 불안정한 결합/해체의 흐름 속에서, 설명되지 않는 심상과 기억의 잔여를 스스로 구성하게 된다.

“소리 덩어리가 공간에 흩어져있다 / 한데 정렬되었다가 반작용으로 튀어나간 / 맥락 없는 사건들, 구체적인 파편들 /이어지다 끊기고, 끊어졌다 다시 이어지는 / 시작도 끝도 분명치 않다 / 어떤 파편들은 하나의 장면을 이룬다 / 공간을 점령했다가 사라진다” -작업노트 중에서-

The work draws inspiration from the square grid layout of short-form media feeds. It begins with the idea that the continuous stream of unrelated, fragmentary videos resembles a fragmented and disjointed inner landscape. The eight speakers each emit sound fragments from different times, spaces, and contexts as if they were discrete events. Sounds scatter, form loose clusters, and are then dismantled again through subtle offsets and rules. At times, they accidentally converge into a single scene (surround), but this cohesion does not last. Within this unstable flow of assembly and disintegration, the audience constructs their own residual images and memories without explicit explanation.

A sound-driven improvised performance that explores personal identity and relationships, moving fluidly between dream and reality.

라이브-샘플링 된 배우의 목소리와, 즉흥 연주, 공진음, 플레이백 사운드 등이 실시간으로 'sonic object' 화되어 시공간을 재배치한다. 사운드는 배경처럼 흐릿하다가 불현듯 사건처럼 등장하고, 조명과 상호작용 하기도 하면서 퍼포머와 함께 매순 실시간 선택으로 이야기를 만들어 나간다.

The actors’ live-sampled voices, improvised music, resonances, and playback sounds are transformed in real time into sonic objects that reorganize space and time. Sound sometimes lingers like an indistinct background, then suddenly emerges as an event, interacting with lighting and shaping the narrative through moment-to-moment decisions with the performers.

관객이 입장하면 폭우 소리와 깜빡이는 조명이 공간을 채운다. 무대 한쪽에 앉은 배우가 어제의 기억을 중얼거린다. 급작스레 빗소리가 멎고 중얼거림이 커진다. 다른 배우가 등장하여 둘이 대화를 시작한다. 옆방에서 들려오는 것 같은 오래된 음악이 서서히 뭉게지고, 남자 배우의 목소리가 공간 전체에서 메아리치며 움직인다. 배우의 실제 목소리는 그 잔향 속에 묻혀 들리지 않게 된다.

“조금 전 남자가 말했던 들이 머리 위와 등 뒤에서 하나씩 깜빡이며 다시 들렸다.그 말들은 사방으로 돌아다니며, 귀 바로 옆까지 날카롭게 다가왔다.공간을 울리는 남자의 목소리는 마치 꿈 속 목소리 같았다. 나는 그 남자의 꿈 속에 들어온 것인가?” -관객 리뷰 중에서-

As the audience enters, the space fills with the sound of heavy rain and flickering lights. An actor sits to one side of the stage, murmuring fragments of yesterday’s memories. Abruptly, the rain stops and the murmuring grows louder. Another actor appears, and the two begin a conversation. Music, as if drifting in from the next room, gradually smears and dissolves. The male actor’s voice echoes and moves across the entire space, while his actual voice becomes buried within its own reverberation and fades from perception.

이머시브 사운드는 무대 위 또 다른 배우로 기능한다. 일상적 대화가 공간 전체를 찢어놓는 왜곡된 사운드로 변모하며, 관객은 배우의 붕괴하는 내면을 청각으로 체감한다.

Immersive sound functions as another performer on stage. Ordinary dialogue fractures into distorted sound that tears across the entire space, allowing the audience to experience the disintegration of the character’s inner world through listening.

존재와 존재하지 않음. 실재와 공空. 우리는 이 사이를 체험할 수 있을까.

<없었던 사라짐>은 사라짐의 불완전성을 이야기하는 동시에, 사라짐이 없어졌기에 비로소 실재實在로 귀환한 상태를 상상하게 하며 이 전시의 출발인 안개의 속성을 은유적으로 보여준다.

즉 안개로 인해 눈앞에 있던 존재가 사라진 상황은 시각 정보가 유실된 상황에서 오는 감각의 오류일 뿐, 실제 안개 안의 나와 본래의 주변 상황은 그 상태 그대로다. 하지만, 반투명한 장막의 겹들이 점차 걷히며 보이게 되는 현재는, 눈앞에 본래 있던 개체의 좌표가 동일하다 할지라도 그것이 과거의 모습과 동일한가에 대해 회의하게 만든다.

다시 말해, 안개가 훑고 간 지금의 내가 그 전의 나와 같은 지에 대해 자문해 보면 그것이 같거나, 같지 않다, 그 어느 것에도 치우치지 않고 그 중간 어느 지점에 놓여있음을 깨닫게 된다. ‘사라지는 모든 것은 흔적을 남기기 때문에 결코 사라지지 않는다.’ (『사라짐에 대하여』중)는 장 보드리야르의 말처럼, 우리는 사라지는 과정에서 새로이 발생한 먼지들과 미처 사라지지 못한 먼지들을 미세하게 감각할 수 있는 것이다.

정의석의 작품 10개의 채널로 구성된 사운드는 공간 곳곳에 위치한 스피커를 통해 전달된다. 좌표처럼 놓인 각각의 스피커에서는 개별적 사운드가 간헐적으로 재생되고, 이는 단독으로, 때로는 공간의 이곳과 저곳의 간극을 포함한 (불협)화음으로 전달된다. 곳곳에서 사건처럼 등장하는 파편적인 사운드는 공기의 무게로 점차 잊히지만, 후에 등장하는 또 다른 사운드에 스치듯 겹쳐지고 기억되며 사라짐과 동시에 탄생한다.

백종관의 작품 5개의 채널로 구성된 비디오는 사라짐에 관한 기억으로 존재한다. 사라지는 대상을 잊지 않기 위해 만든 기록이자 조금씩 발진發疹하는 고통을 기어이 동반하기 위해 만든 상상. 인간이 갖는 집착과 번뇌를 투사하고자 소환한 신화神話는 사라짐을 최종 목표로 하는 삶이라는 사건을 감각하기 위해 모든 부스럭거림, 모든 그림자에 오랜 시선을 두고 그것을 두 번 세 번 되돌아보게 만든다.

로와정의 작품 안개가 걷히면서 점차 희미하게 드러나는 형체처럼, 보이지만 보이지 않는 -읽을 수 없는- 단어들이 눈앞에 있다. 한정된 크기의 공책 위에 그 보다 더 큰 글자로 그려야만 그것을 온전히 체화할 수 있는 아이처럼, 벽면의 단어들은 원근법을 무시한 채 한 선분線分 내에 위치할 수 있는 다양한 점들의 좌표로 관객을 안내한다.

정의석, 로와정, 백종관의 작품 구부러진 벽면 위에 몸을 맡긴 듯 붙어있는 것은 세 명의 작가가 하나의 이미지를 릴레이 하듯 만든 것으로, 하나의 공간 안에 용해된 세 개의 시간이다. ‘자신의 사라짐의 기초 위에서 살지 않는 것은 아무것도 없다.’ (장 보드리야르, 위의 책)는 보드리야르의 말을 증명하듯, 작품은 사라짐과 사라지지 않음의 중간을 멈추지 않고 서성이고 있다.

전시 공간 안에서 세 작가의 작품은 실재의 점과 공허空虛의 점을 잇는 선분의 형태로 떠다니고 있다. 각각의 선분은 입자처럼 독립적이지만, 전시를 관람하는 관객은 그것들이 교차하며 생겨나는 또 다른 지점을 발견하거나, 선분들이 겹쳐지며 만들어내는 확장된 선분을 발견하고, 나아가 그 선분들의 합치로 펼쳐지는 무한한 직선을 감각하게 될 것이다.
