I buried my grandmother two days ago. Cried a lot. Hugged a lot. Reflected a lot. Still reflecting.
What can I glean from the life of my Inay? What are some of the lessons she taught me?
1. Be fully present.
-My Inay’s words will forever be etched into my mind: “Eat while you eat, play while you play.”
2. Be disciplined.
-My Inay was a woman who understood hardship. She pressed through every season, every kind of adversity, with strong, unwavering discipline.
3. Be kind.
-My Inay served, accepted, and gave attention to everyone she could, no matter what their background was. It doesn’t matter where they came from—she saw them as a child of God worthy of kindness.
4. Be prayerful.
-My Inay was up early every. single. morning. Interceding on behalf of her family. She was a true prayer warrior. As a man of faith, this is the kind of person I aspire to be—someone who never stops talking to God.
As my dad said at her memorial service—my Inay was a woman who understood her life assignment and completed it. She lived well. She loved well.
To say that I will miss her is a staggering understatement. But I have also come to realize that as I move forward from her grave, she will always be with me wherever I go.
Inay, I love you. This is not good bye. I’ll see you again soon.
