Summary: Best friends since eighth grade leading up to hidden feelings sort of
first fic, so not too much đ
It had been exactly five years since you and Jermaine became friends in the eighth grade. The first meeting between you two, was him trying to convince you to let him cut infront of you in the lunch line. Which of course, you thought was random but decided to not pay it nor him any mind. But him on the other hand, decided to take an interest in you from that very moment. Just by the way you looked at him even if it was passive, he knew that he wanted to be apart of your life.
So after that encounter, were many more that he initiated subtly at first but eventually you started to wonder why he kept talking to you. The âHey, I was wonderinâ, if you could gimme the notes that I missed?â or the âWhat kind of sports do you like..?I play baseball so I was just curious about you.â After many of those encounters, you chose to give him a chance and started warming up to his small talk. Which eventually led to longer conservations that made you both become friends that were inseparable. Walks home, coming over to each otherâs houses to do homework or to just talk about random things, staying after school to watch him play baseball, etc.
The closer you guys got, the more you learned about each other. Jermaine telling you about the band heâs in with his brothers and how much of an impact it has on his day to day life. âSoooo, howâs the band coming along?â, you said as you both were walking side by side, away from the school.
He looks at you with a slight indecisiveness while he eats some candy. âI mean, itâs not too bad..itâs actually kind of fun yâknow without all the strictness and pressureâ, he says. âBut yâknow, I was thinkinâ, one day I could teach you how to play the bass since I already started semi teachinâ you how to play baseballâ, he said with a smile. You thought to yourself for a moment. âHmmmm, maybe so if youâre not too busy in the future for me, Maineâ, you said with a little laugh. He stopped walking and looked at you like you just said you liked mayonnaise better than mustard.
âGirl, Iâll always have time for you, stop playing, youâre my best friendâ, he says while looking directly into your eyes. You just look at him without even needing to say words. He knew you believed him and knew that he meant what he said.
As time went on, five years to be exact; a lot happened. A couple of months after that conversation, him and his brothers got signed to Motown. And well, you started seeing less and less of him. Yeah, you both were still in contact with each other but he was becoming more busy and you didnât want to interfere with his schedule.
Now, the year is 1973 and you were in your room doing your hair, when the phone rang. âHello?â, you say with a little bit of irritation from being interrupted from your task. âHey..uh why you sound irritated?â, Jermaine says. You almost flip out your chair when you hear his voice. You havenât heard from him in a month. At first, he called everyday but eventually it paused. And between that pause, your dad got offered a job in California that paid 10 times more than what he was making in Indiana. So, you ended up moving to California just two years after Jermaine did. You didnât wanna think too much into it but it was like the universe was tryna keep you two in close proximity.
âOh..my bad, hey Maineâ, you say dryly due to the surprise. He heard the way your voice lacked excitement but chose to brush it off. âSo, how you been?â, he says with a genuine curiosity. âIâve been chillinâŠsurprised to see that you called, considering how itâs been a while since we talkedâ, you say. âYeah yeah, I know but I was calling to try to see if you wanted to come over later? I finally got some free time and I wanna see you.â, he says with his soft voice.
For some reason, you started getting butterflies. But it wasnât all the way shocking. You always thought he was cute from the day you guys met but when you moved to California, it was different. When he found out you were moving, he was ecstatic in a way the he hid with a friendly nonchalantness. So when you visited his house in 71â and saw him, you knew from that day, you felt something for Jermaine that was more than just for a best friend. But you pushed it away because well, you donât really dwell on certain things too much.
Even if you did notice the way his fro was legit perfect or the way his smile lit up the whole room, making you smile with him. You chose to ignore that cause thatâs your homeboy, your bestie. But it was a moment where, you were hanging out with him and he offered you a sip of his drink. You thought to yourself, âWoah. Okay, itâs not that serious, yâall are friends n heâs just being niceâ, you said to yourself. He just stared at you while you were contemplating your decision. A couple seconds later, you said yes because you didnât want to overthink more. But when you did sip from his drink, Jermaine just stared at you again and smiled. Then you both just kept walking and talking.
âHmmm, I donât knowâ, you say trying to keep your cool while twisting the phone cord. âWell, I know for you and like I said, I wanna see my best friend so come around 2, okay?â, he says confidently. He knew that you would give in. âAlright, Iâll be there. Just donât rush meâ, you said with a soft smile. âOkay, see youâ, he said with a smile as well. You hung up the phone and said to yourself, âWell.â And thatâs all you could say because now you have to focus back on the prolonged task. Your hair.
After a few hours, you were at his house. In his room, sitting on his bed. His room smelt of detergent and cologne. And you were trying to ignore the fact that you liked it so your eyes started to wander. Since, you hadnât been there in a while, it was only fitting. You looked in the mirror trying to see if your fro was still looking good when he came into the room, smelling like the cologne in the room.
âMy bad, I just had to check on somethingâ, he says while he looks at you. âItâs coolâ, you say trying to ignore how good he smells. He sits on the bed next to you. You finally ask him the question thatâs been on your mind since he called. âSo, why did you want me to come over?â, you say curiously. âWell, I was thinkinâ and I remembered back in eighth grade, I promised that I would teach you to play bassâ, he says softly. âAnd well I never got to it so now Iâm fulfilling my promiseâ. You both looked at each other. Then your eyes moved to his instrument in the corner. âThatâs all?â, you say playfully. âAnd well, I missed youâ, he said. You could have fainted right there. Why were his words affecting you this much? âI missed you tooâ, you say nervously.
Jermaine just looks at you with a warmness that makes the butterflies come back. He gets up and grabs the bass. Then comes over to you and sits behind you on the bed. You take the instrument and begin setting your posture and everything. When you feel him start to get closer and set his hands on top of yours. You tried to ignore that thought in the back of your mind. As he got closer, you could feel him breathing, the way his heart was beating. And well, it was beating fast but you ignored that. When he started to tell you what to do, you realized just how close he was when he started talking softly directly in your ear. Thatâs when you started to get anxious.
You tried to keep your eyes on the instrument when you felt that his eyes were directly focused on you. You started to play to try to distract yourself. But after a couple of minutes, you stopped and looked to your side to where he was closest. âYou look really pretty today, yâknow that rightâ, he said softly in your ear. His eyes then dropped to your lips and you saw how he bit his bottom lip. Without thinking, Jermaine started to lean in. His lips brushed over yours and then finally, he gave in. He kissed yours first and his lips were so soft. He pulled back, trying to see your reaction. But thatâs when you put the bass down and grabbed his neck gently and pressed your lips against his. The kiss was deep, his tongue slipping in your mouth. You felt him grab your hips to move you onto his lap.
When all of a sudden you broke the kiss and stood up quickly almost tripping and rapidly said, âUhh, Iâm actually really thirsty right now, Maine, Iâm a go downstairs real quick, okâ, then without even a glance back at him, you sped out of his room, quickly to the kitchen.
As you made your way to the kitchen, Jermaine was still in the same position where you left him. Except he was very confused. âWhy did she just- alright manâ, he said with a dazed tone. He got up from his bed, smoothed his white shirt down and started making his way to where you were.
You heard footsteps approaching the kitchen and automatically knew who it was. Jermaine. As he started getting closer to the kitchen, you decided to really focus on your. You saw his hair, then his whole body came in fully, with an anxious but calm intent. âAre you alright? Iâm just confused as to why you ran away from me..?â, he says. Standing in the corner by the refrigerator is you, drinking your water trying to dissociate yourself from the embarrassment. âUhhhh, who ran away? I just was just really thirstyâ, you said in rushed tone. He looked at you with a slight smirk. âYou ran away, girl. What, I make you too nervous or some?â, he said with his flirtatious voice.
Something in you was both irritated and nervous because you didnât like the fact that he knew the impact he had on you. You put your water down and began walking toward him. The closer you got, the more his eyes stayed glued on you. When you finally got face to face, his eyes dropped back to your mouth.
You decided to not fight it anymore but to drag it out to irritate him. Your hands moved from his shirt to the chain around his neck. And you heard his breathing stop for moment while his eyes were glued onto you. Your arms went around his neck when you suddenly started to place wet kisses up his neck to his jaw. His hands tightly held your hips as he leaned in to your touch. Your mouth directly to his ear, âDo I make you too nervous Jermaine?â, you say softly. He couldnât even form words, all he could do was shake his head yes. Thatâs when you decided to get closer to his lips and lick both of them. Trying to tease him.
When you did that it was like he was out of his body. He held tighter onto your hips and lifted you gently on top of the counter. âDonât do that. Please donât do thatâ, he said lowly like he was trying to convince himself that he didnât love it. âDo what?â, you said. âTease me. You know, I want you,â he said while placing forehead on your shoulder. As he leaned down, you the way his heart was beating and knew you had him exactly where you wanted.
