anatoly-veselovβ:
Β For a moment he felt almost guilty β if one could see a crest fall, heβd just seen it in the way her whole body seemed to sag at the absence of her preferred drink. But more than that heβd seen the dead-tired look in her eyes, the way sheβs slumped into her seat and clung to the bar like a lifeline.Β
Β Days like that required alcohol.Β
Β βLife is hard β a long, slow torture punctuated by moments of bliss and happiness, and then we die,β he spoke matter-of-factly, not really in the way that most might make such a glum statement. There was nothing defeatist in his tone, but more an air of something who had excepted the bad with the good and moved on with his life.Β
Β βDrinking helps numb the pain β just be careful not to miss the happy bits,β he lifted his glass to her as if to cheers, mumblingΒ βto your happinessβ in thick Russian.Β
She felt bad, a passing piece of shame, that Johnathanβs mad dog ramblings had lead her to believe they lacked a certain eloquence. A stupid thought really. Of course, he would speak of them as temperamental dogsββ itβs what he liked about them. His scathing comments had almost been praise. She lifted her lips into an imitation smile.
βCouldnβt have said it better myself,β She agreed. It was true, now more than ever. Sheβd experience the brief high of London, the high of Johnathan, the high of a promising career. Now she was starting to smell the rot beneath it all. The commercial break of happiness was closing and it didnβt care whether Jess was bitter about it or not.
She almost smiled at the language, not because she knew what the other was saying- god knows she didnβt speak a word of Russian (outside of poorly imitating the accept and saying vodka here and there, which certainly didnβt count) and he couldβve said something foul for all she knew. But it had sounded pleasant, and that was enough.Β βTo the happy bits.β She responded, lifting her glass in turn.
βJessica,β She offered finally, extending her hand in his direction.
Before We Go (2014) directed by Chris Evans
castillo-adrianβ:
As Adrian sat silently while Jess tended to his wounded apprentice, he thought of his sister.Β InΓ¨s, like Jessica, was a nurse. He remembered how stern heβd been once, when Julien suggested taking one of the St. Clair loyalists toΒ InΓ¨s to take out a bullet in his leg. They almost got into a huge fight over it, but his sister was off-limits. Adrian would rather risk the boy bleeding to death, than involvingΒ InΓ¨s with the St. Clair organisation.
Adrian felt a tang of guilt, for not expanding the same level of protectiveness of Jessica, and maybe a bit scorn for Johnathan, for letting her get involved.
Not that Adrian didnβt appreciate her help. He watched as she delicately sutured the idiot who let himself be stabbed in an attack he shouldβve seen coming. Adrian thought heβd train him better than that. He had thought wrong, obviously. The semi-apologetic, semi-scared look the loyalist gave to Adrian had been returned with silence and dismissal.Β Heβd deal with him later. The assassin let him scurry off, and gave him time to summon enough courage to face him the next day.
Although he and Jess hadnβt been particularly close, Adrian had gotten to know her a little bit, mostly during the same occasions as this: her patching up his men. Tonight though, he decided to stay a little longer and see how she was doing. What had happened to Jai disturbed even him, an assassin no stranger to all sorts of gruesome death, he couldnβt even fathom how she wouldβve felt.
βYes, please,β he nodded in agreement. Adrian let the silence linger briefly, and sipped the drink that she offered, before he asked,Β βHow are you, Jess?β
She opened her fridge; a few leftover take out containers that were likely to never be finished and two six-packs of cider. Groceries were a waste of time, what little time she did spend here wasnβt spent cooking, at some point sheβd gotten tired of throwing away rotting vegetables she shouldβve eaten sooner. She pulled the two bottles of cider free, passing one to Adrian across the counter.Β βItβs a screw top.β She twisted her hands in the motion for good measure before resting her forearms on the cheap laminate, hunching a little as she leaned. Once, she mightβve offered him the couch. But she didnβt sit there much these days. It didnβt matter that Johnathan had replaced it and the rug too. It didnβt help that sheβd moved the furniture around as much as she could given the tight space. The blood was still there for her, even if no one else saw it.
βAll things considered?β She responded, unsure how to follow up the words before finally shaking her head with a polite smile. She loathed how the question made her eyes want to tear. There was nothing to be said, she wasnβt doing well. When time crawled stagnantly, she felt her mind eating her alive. Work was fine, it kept her busy. Johnathan too. But this place made her skin itch. Sheβd move if she had the time.Β βGetting by,β She completed. He mustnβt think much of her, someone like Adrian had probably seen countless awful things. Probably got to sleep just fine. Johnathan too. She watched him sleep like the dead night after night and wondered if he thought less of her for how fresh Jaiβs death remained for her.
βWhat about you, anyway?β
Is there anything that Johnathan could do to make her leave him? Where does she draw the line?
There are things Johnathanβs already done that sheβd leave him for. The bulk of which she doesnβt know, but thereβs definitely lines of morality Jess canβt reconcile. She just doesnβt see him in that light, and would probably need to see it first hand to believe it. Information second hand from someone who hates him, isnβt likely to switch her onto it. Maybe sew doubt, but not enough to walk away. To her, heβs good and kind and maybe heβs ruthless but heβs ruthless with other monsterβs so how bad could he really be right? She doesnβt even believe, really, that heβd be someone who could hurt innocent people. She doesnβt view him as something that could harm her. That being said, if she did, sheβd probably be scared to leave him. Sheβs completely alone here, her entire presence in London is tethered to Johnathan and the Rutherfordβs. He got her the job she has now, the only people she really knows are his people. I think part of Jessβs denial about who he is, is knowing that sheβs going to be in a very unopportunistic spot if she does manage to walk away.
Did Jess have feelings for Jai?
Itβs definitely not a yes, and itβs not a complete no. Jess tends to have a lot of fondness for anyone that makes her comfortable, she hasnβt had that bond with many people in her life. She never particularly fit anywhere, especially after she rejected the Kings. It was one of the reasons she fell for Johnathan as fast as she did, because he took an interest and was involved with her at her loneliest. Jai was someone that she formed a bond with when her life was on the up post-meeting Johnathan, rather than when it was at itβs lowest so she associates him with the better part of her life. Even when she wanted to stay aloof with the Rutherfords, she let him close enough to be considered a good friend. I think it probably felt like a crush at times, but realistically it was one of the first friends sheβd really made in her adult life. And like Johnathan, she kept it very compartmentalised so she never saw the uglier dark things. He was just someone who was kind to her. Not everyone was awful in Porto Velho but she knew how she was viewed there versus how she is here and knows that she wasnβt a pity conversation with him. So it probably blurred the lines at times. But never really beyond that.
Thereβd been a time Jess hated the backyard patch upβs. Each time made her feel as though she were dancing too close to the line. That if she passed over it, sheβd be more of a Rutherford than she could take back and the fragile neutrality would be irreparable. That had been before Jai. Before the French had politely informed her sheβd been miles over the line the entire time, and if that was the case, sheβd remember that the next time she had to decide which bones to set, which wounds to close. She worked with quiet efficiency. The boyββ man, she supposed, wore a steady poker face that only crumpled as she began to suture with only whiskey and tylenol to numb him. But he was brave about it, most of them were. Adrian was quiet too, presumably leaving her to her concentration.Β βYouβre lucky you didnβt lose your eye,β She scolded softly, readying the butterfly closures. He quirked something resembling a sheepish smirk before looking at Adrian over her shoulder. The kitchen table was sprawled with first aid kits of varying legal obtainment. Including tetanus boosters, after Johnathan had bought a woman that a dog had done its damnedest to take her arm. It was only seeming to expand with each odd case.
Finally, he stood, sewed as well as they could hope. Sheβd thought Adrian may drive him home, in fact, sheβd only managed half of that question before the Rutherford boy thanked her and informed her heβd be taking an uber. She didnβt understand, almost offering to drive him herself before he dismissed himself. Was this some bizarre respect thing that she hadnβt understood, or was he returning to his post hoping to avoid a scolding? She supposed she shouldnβt ask questions. She turned to Adrian, pulling the latex gloves off of her hands, tossing them in the kitchen bin, along with the bloodied paper towel.Β βDrink?β She asked over the counter. Being alone with Adrian in her home previously wouldβve made her stomach sink. But now, she didnβt care much either way. No presence was as unwelcome as Jaiβs ghost, by comparison, she may even be glad for the company. Mob related or otherwise.
The handwriting, distastefully elegant and aloof. She found a deep hatred stirring in her belly that she hadnβt known she was capable of. It churned like acid, so violent and deafening she understood for the first time how Johnathan could beat someone bloody and just keep going. The thought was the only thing sobering her shock as the walls felt like they were toppling onto her. How much she wanted to pick up something heavy and bring it down on whoever was responsible until their face was also a mismatched tapestry of tissue, just like how theyβd left him. Theyβd come into her home, broken in and violated it. Theyβd reduced her friend to a barely recognisable heap and left her boyfriends name stapled to him for further insult.
Inbar Lavi as Winsome in βSons of Anarchyβ
There wasnβt a single cell in his body that wanted to be in the middle of a festive-fucking-fiasco that night. If heβd thought he could get away with dipping on the arrangements without inviting the wrath of the ever-hormonal Maya Alliot, he mightβve tried, but since her beloved vegetable had finally returned to consciousness, sheβd been touchier than ever. If keeping her happy meant pretending he didnβt want to use the skates to run over the throats of half of their supposed London βloyalistsβ, then he would just have to manage.
The Frenchman had been walking in the direction of the crowds heβd rather have avoided whenβeyes fixed to his phone screenβhe collided with somebody else. An apology died somewhere in the back of his throat when he realized who. How she was looking at him.
All right, so maybe Hyde Park wasnβt a total bust after all.
Rather disappointingly, Laurent hadnβt seen Jessica since sheβd patched his head up at the hospital. Iβll scream; it was a slight change in tone from the laughter theyβd shared then. Well, fuck. Had the absolute fucking brick she called a boyfriend finally attempted some honesty, then? If not about himself, in the wake of his little lapdogβs murder, maybe heβd thought a heads up on the French might help to protect herβ¦
βNow thatβs a conversation I wouldnβt have minded overhearing.β
βYouβre not going to scream.β
Because Jessica was smart, and nobody would get there before he snapped her neck.
It was no secret that he was still livid at the loyalist whoβd delivered the uglier half of Jaiβs corpse to her house. When Laurent had worked so hard to justify keeping her name out of the equation, heβd seen the flourish as personal insubordination, and that could not and would not fly if he was supposed to have control. Laurent understood her anger, and the sympathy he felt was genuine when his own girlfriend had been dragged into shit she never shouldβve seen to pay for his sins. But that was a conversation for another day. He hoped it weighed on Johnathan just as heavily as it did on him.
βWhat did he tell you?β
Youβre not going to scream.
Like hell she wouldnβt. If anyone tried picking her off the street sheβd scream bloody murder. It was better to die here, sheβd seen what theyβd done to Jai. They wouldnβt have the luxury of torture in the middle of Hyde fucking Park. But he kept his distance and for that her voice stayed low.Β βHe told me enough. I shouldβve let you bleed out.β Of course Laurent had been nothing close that when sheβd seen him last, only a superficial trauma. In an instant the thought made her stomach roll. She hadnβt even considered it, not for a second did it cross her mind that heβd inflicted it- likely himself to get in and keep tabs on her. Heβd known who she was all along, why else would he insist on being seen by her? She felt as though she may be sick.
Jai was kind, in the same way Johnathan was. She knew both had potential for violence, but theyβd never frightened her. Nor had they tried to. They were good to her, and now one of them was gone and Johnathanβs side was exposed where his friend had once been. Sheβd never hated anything as much as she loathed Laurent in that moment.Β βOf course he didnβt have to say much. Jai said plenty.β She seethed quietly. His face still haunted her, the mismatching of bloodied parts that only resembled the person sheβd known. The gaping hole left by point blank rage. The awful way theyβd sawed him in half. Oh Jai had said more than Johnathan ever could. She was dealing with monsters she hadnβt anticipated.
βWas it you? Did you do that to him?β It may have been a question, but her voice was all accusation. Even if he hadnβt, surely heβd given the order? Since arriving in London sheβd asked to stay neutral, sheβd never wanted to know enough to bias her. If she knew too much, how was she supposed to treat people who may walk out and blow Johnathanβs brains out on the street? How would she live with that, if sheβd been one that helped them? She now lived knowing how easy it would be to look the other way if their lives were on the line. When sheβd walked by Theoβs room while on call- she couldnβt even think about how tempting it had been. After how brutally heβd beaten Johnathan, she never wanted the fucker to wake up again. Maybe she shouldβve.
Of all the things she hated the French for at present, the alien rage theyβd filled her with ranked highest.
Jessica walked around the Hyde Park festivities with the same weighted paranoia she wore everywhere these days. Nowhere felt safe anymore. Her home had been invaded and defiled. Even in CΓ‘vado, sheβd seen nothing like it and sheβd seen more than sheβd ever cared to. She watched the skaters, wishing to feel that whimsical wonder sheβd expected to feel, but there was only anxiety. Who was watching her, while she was watching them? Johnathan had told her to be careful, not to be alone and she wasnβt. The place was bristling with life, but it didnβt make her feel any safer. Still, she forced herself to smile, hoping the familiarity would fool her busy mind.
Mourning Jai felt dishonest. He was Johnathanβs best friend and he seemed to be coping far better than she. But she wasnβt just missing a friend, though that ached too. Jai had been Johnβs right-hand man for a long time, and heβd been picked off seemingly so at random that it terrified her. It couldβve been Johnββ but it wasnβt. It couldβve been herββ but it wasnβt. They were both alive by the grace of luck at best. At worst, because the French had chosen it to be so for whatever reasonβs she couldnβt fathom. She turned away from the rink, moving towards the markets as she weaved around strangers. Once she made it past the busiest stalls, commotion died out and stragglers remained. She almost bumped chest to chest as she fumbled for her keys, ready to leave.
She wished it was a stranger.
She stumbled back half a pace, eyes ignited with fear and fury. For the first time in her life, Jessica looked at someone and wished, really wished, she could kill him. With teeth and nails if she had to, it was a primal disgust. Heβd drank with her, been a friendly face... Sheβd thought of him as kind. A cat and mouse game, sheβd come to realise. Sheβd been something to bat between his paws before sheβd had the good sense to be frightened. Her time meeting him with warmness was through. βIβll scream,β She threatened. She wanted to glance away, see how far the nearest witness might be, but she wouldnβt take his eyes off of him.
anatoly-veselovβ:
Β His attention drifted from the flat screen above the bar β a babble of voices behind a vaguely interesting news-ticker β to the glass being slid across the lacquered surface toward the patron to his left.Β
Β βSeriously?β The look that accompanied the comment of incredulity was one of disappointment and light disgust; not all that different from his resting face, mind you. βYou want a sippy-cup with that? Need me to dice up your chicken tendies for you? Noβ¦. no no no,β he shook his head and waved the bartender over, pointing out a frosted bottle with a thin red stripe along the label midway up the shelves, reaching across the bar to pluck up a clean tumbler off the mat.
Β βTonight we are drinking,β he emphasized the word thickly as a large hand enveloped the top of the otherβs glass, sliding it away from them whilst swapping in the empty vessel that he promptly urged the bartender to fill.Β
Her eyes dimly focused on the lemonade being pushed in her direction. It wasnβt the night for drinking. Her shift had been long and taxing, her stomach was empty and her mood was glum. The last thing she needed was to light a spark near all that bad decision gasoline. Lemonade and a bowl of chips were what her soul needed. Then she could get home and pretend to sleep before she had to be up in the morning. She almost didnβt realise his words were for her, prompting a rather late raise of her brows as she turned to look at him startled.
Russian. Loudly so. Johnathan had told her that the Russians could be trusted. Within reason. Which sounded an awful lot like the tentative warning you gave for a dog thatβs been known to bite. Within reason had a lot of flexibilities. Still, sheβd patched one up a month ago, heβd seemed friendly enough. Another late-night call, a slew of apologies for involving her and insistence that there was nowhere else to go. He didnβt need to try so hard with his lies anymore, sheβd given up on turning them away. Russianβs could be trusted though.
Within reason.
βI shouldnβt,β She protested weakly, trying to pick his face as she met his eye. Had she met this one? She didnβt think so. Johnathan certainly hadnβt introduced her.
The bartender took her lemonade back at his request and for a childish moment, she almost wanted to whine. It seemed like such a silly thing to look forward to, but she had. Still. She relented with a sigh.Β βWhatβs the occasion?β

TRADITIONS:
Are you a Grinch, or do you enjoy the holidays?: Jess likes the holidays well enough, sheβs not an overtly festive person, but you won't catch her whining over carollers.
On which day do you celebrate Christmas?: Jess celebrates Christmas on the 25th, but Christmas Eve was always the bigger event in her household. Her father is Puerto Rican and back home, December and even some of January were very festive times. On the years they could afford it, they had a very large traditional dinner on Christmas Eve and would spend most of Christmas day chilling out.
Is it a religious celebration or non-denominational?: For Jess; non-denominational. For her family, it was a Christian holiday.
Who do you usually spend the holidays with?: She previously spent all of them with her mother and father, sometimes with the rest of her extended family as well. This is the first year that she wonβt be seeing them. Her plans likely include Johnathan unless sheβs working.
What does your typical Christmas dinner include?: Roast pork, rice and beans, patties. Jessβs favourite though, was always fried bread.
Do you open your presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?: One on Christmas eve, the other/s on Christmas day.
Do you still have a stocking?: No.
Do you still get an Advent Calendar?:Β No.
Do you leave all of your Christmas shopping until last minute, or are you organized?: Jess is very organised and will pick them up as early as January in some cases if sales are good. Sheβs never had a lot of money, getting presents for people takes prioritisation and budgeting year-round, particularly when she was younger.
Do you take charge of the day, or are you the one in the corner sipping Baileys?: Sheβd help her mom but Jess would rather skirt around for some Christmas schnaps if she can.
Any traditions passed down through the family?: Theyβve all somewhat ended with Jess. Itβs not something sheβs in the place to continue with this year and it doesnβt feel right to do so far from home. ( Though you might catch her sprinkling some sugar on her doorstep for good luck on new years. )
Any weird things your family does that others donβt?: One year they lost power completely for two days which prompted them to make monstrous sandwiches out of an assortment of food that would likely spoil. On the 23rd each year they repeat it to clear room for the Christmas food.
Do you go all-out with decorations, or keep it basic?: Basic.
Post a picture of what your Christmas tree looks like:
Do you ever spend the holidays away from home?: This is her first Christmas away from home in her life.
Do you like to get a bit tipsy, or is it an alcohol-free zone?: Tipsy!
FAVOURITES/FUN BITS:
Favourite Christmas song: Baby Please Come Home by Sleeping At Last
Least favourite Christmas song: Santa Baby by Michael Buble
Favourite Christmas food: Tembleque
Least favourite Christmas food: Lentil Patties.
Favourite Christmas movie: Love Actually
Least favourite Christmas movie: The Polar Express
Favourite Christmas tradition: Putting the tree up.
Ever re-gifted?: Of course.
If you had an unlimited budget, what would you buy for the three most important people in your life?: She would pay off her fatherβs medical bills and pay off the rest of their mortgage for her mother. She would purchase a really nice vacation for Johnathan and herself.
If you could have any gift in the world, unlimited budget, what would it be?: A house.
Weirdest Secret Santa gift ever received: Weird only because of how bland and unthoughtful, but back in Porto Velho she received another set of scrubs at the hospital Secret Santa party and it was disappointing.
If you could kiss any fictional character under the mistletoe, who would it be?: Christian from Moulin Rouge.
If you were forced to wear an ugly sweater to an ugly sweater party, what would it look like?: It would have to light up and make noise. Jess isnβt going to half ass an ugly sweater event.
Whatβs your go-to outfit for festive fancy dress?: Canβt go wrong in a red dress.
Christmas Day or New Yearβs Eve?: Christmas day by far.
White Christmas or snow-free?: White Christmas!
MEMORIES:Β
Earliest Christmas memory: Jessβs earliest Christmas memory was accidentally pulling the table cloth while trying to keep herself upright as she slipped and dragged all the drinks and tableware down with her, lucky the food hadnβt been plated yet.
Best Christmas memory: Sheβs most looking forward to this Christmas. Itβs somewhere new, sheβs more comfortable than sheβd ever been in CΓ‘vado. She loves Johnathan. She wants to see if all holidays are fated to be melancholic or if breaking the pattern may salvage it.
Worst Christmas memory: She remembers her father breaking down the afternoon of Christmas when she was thirteen. He went to his room, she hadnβt meant to listen. This was the year that his back pain had started to become unmanageable, theyβd barely gotten by most of the year even with him avoiding the hospital as much as he had. Keeping the apartment had been the only miracle of that year. Come Christmas there was no money for festivities, Jess had insisted that she didnβt mind. Heβd held it together until their neighbour had brought around some of the leftovers from their cookout and heβd known then that their money troubles were talked about in a place where no one was well off. She knew it wasnβt her fault, but she still felt awful. It didnβt matter how many times she told her mother and father she didnβt mind, they still looked disappointed and embarrassed.
Best Christmas present ever received, and who was it from: Her grandmother handed down her necklace to her, a chunkier than ideal golden cross with fine pearl detailings.
Best Christmas present ever sent, and who was it for: She got her mother's car fully serviced three years back after it had seemingly stopped running. It involved more contact than ideal with the Kings but it was worth it to see her mothers stress diminish, even if only a little.
Someone you wish you could bring back for one last Christmas: Previously she wouldβve said her Grandmother. Now she would say Jai, not because they were that close but because she canβt set foot inside her own home without thinking of him.
Have you ever been stuck somewhere else for Christmas?: Sheβs had to work the last couple of Christmasβs so somewhat yes. The hospital isnβt the best place to be on Christmas.
