Superhero Garbage

The piece of garbage I brought to class was a cardboard box that holds tea bags. Amongst the countless number of ways to recycle cardboard, Jaime Salm and Esther Chung’s 3D wallpaper made from 100% recycled waste paper stood out. Their product consists of tiles that are not only fully customizable but also provide excellent acoustics – it is second best to the commonly used acoustic foam when it comes to sound absorption. The tiles are a closed loop manufacturing process, meaning it doesn’t produce any waste when it’s recycled. Like most ways of recycling cardboard, my little cardboard box will go through the process of being broken down into pulp, and from there, the pulp will be molded into the shape of the 3D wallpaper tile.

Revolution Reboot: Second Skin

EXTREME SCENARIO Society’s ability to hear and speak has deteriorated to such an extent that we are no longer able to communicate face-to-face. As it stands, we mainly communicate through text, an image-based languages on screen centered devices such as computers, tablets and phones. Since touch and deep communication are essential to the survival, development and overall happiness of the human being, it is critical that we develop a tool for intimate and efficient communication for this new era of humankind.

OUR SOLUTION Using an electromagnetic pulse that covers the surface of the human body, our Second Skin allows for intimate communication between willing participants. By monitoring heart rate, brainwaves, body heat and other bodily activities, the Second Skin allows two participants to touch and share their thoughts, emotions, memories and sensory information. When two or more currents meet, a mutual sharing of information begins. The two participants can see and understand each other in a way that is fundamentally open, truthful and truly intimate. Communication is not limited to words; images, colors, feelings, smells, and tastes can all be transmitted as the electric current stimulates different nerve endings and other neural or physiological aspects of the wearer.

The new form of communication is not limited to face-to-face encounters. A long distance application exists wherein the users simply touch a digital interface that connects them to the other user’s Second Skin. This version of the application will be a good enhancement to long distance relationships. The Second Skin suit also allows users in close proximity to get a visual sense of the people around them. When the suit picks up on the neighboring user’s information, the primary user may see a change in their neighbor’s color, smell, or get a general sense of feeling from them. This helps strangers connect and relate to the people around them.
