In the documentary, How to Survive a Plague they mention this very fact. Reagan was the president during this time and do you know what he did when the LGBTQ community begged him for help? He fucking laughed at us. His administration CELEBRATED that finally, ‘God’s judgement in the form of a plague’ was striking down queer people. They saw it as a form of divine population control. Reagan could have given a rats ass about us…

Until the plague began to effect straight people. THEN his administration cared. Because the people that mattered were finally getting sick. And finally the millions of dollars in research money was poured into finding a treatment for HIV. But by then, so many LGBTQ individuals had died. More people died from the initial HIV epidemic than the Vietnam war.

So when straight people complain about being ‘oppressed’ and why there isn’t a straight pride parade? Go fuck yourself. No one has ever tried to wipe you out through a plague, ignored your cries for help as a disease wiped out massive amounts of your community.

One of the interesting things I noticed about Charlie’s Angels (2019) is that unlike other recent by women for women action films like Wonder Woman (and presumably Captain Marvel and Ghostbusters though I haven’t seen those), it notably does sexualize its female characters, particularly Kristen Stewart’s character Sabina. She’s often dressed revealingly and there are plenty of shots that linger on her legs and butt. The audience is clearly meant to be titillated and it isn’t at all subtle about it (this movie does not do subtlety). But I think where this differs from the way sexually attractive women are framed in male-oriented cinema is that while she is heavily sexualized, she’s also very humanized and never objectified. She’s a funny, flawed but capable person who the audience can identify with. She loves food, she awkwardly flirts with women at the gym, she oohs and awes over cute dogs, she does goofy dances in front of security cameras, she makes funny faces to amuse children and gets herself into all kinds of undignified situations. She’s not just a beautiful woman to admire on the screen. She’s a whole person just like us.

Straight men can learn a lot from wlw on how to view women sexually without objectifying them like we are conditioned to do by patriarchal society and media, and male filmmakers in particular can certainly learn a lesson or two from Charlie’s Angels.
