He was staring at her, just as shocked as she was at what had happened. Roman, however, seemed to recover faster. His hands found their way to the waistband of her shorts. When he tugged, it brought her back to reality with a thud.
Makenzie swallowed, wriggling away. âGotta use the restroom.â
Roman frowned. He lifted his arms to stop her moving, but she was too fast. His brows knitted together when she slid out of his arms. âMakenzie wait-â
But she already ducked off into the shelter of his bathroom. Eyes wide with disbelief over what sheâd just done, she let out a quiet gasp.
Had that really just happened?
She thought back to the tantalizing image of Roman's head thrown back and lips parted in a low groan of ecstasy.
It happened, and she wanted more
She grinned to herself, still warm with exertion, and began to wash her hands free of the evidence of their hookup. She squeezed her eyes shut as she felt the coolness of the water attempt to calm the fire inside of her. But her body betrayed her, still buzzing with adrenaline and desire that couldnât be calmed just by cold sink water.
He was her trainer. The person who was supposed to push her, guide her, and keep her on track for her looming photoshoot. And yet, here she was, hiding in his bathroom because she couldnât stop replaying the feel of his mouth against hers.
When Makenzie finished at the sink, she realized she had a problem.
She looked at her topless reflection and bit her lip. Her shirt had been tossed over her head somewhere in the living room, leaving her with nothing to cover up with. Her only choice was to walk back into the living room and face her personal trainer bare-chested. No more hiding, she thought
A few moments later, Makenzie walked out into the living room with a bare chest clad only in the shorts he gave her.
Roman was still on the sofa. He looked up when she padded out and his eyes widened. Immediately, they dropped to the sight of her breast. She didnât attempt to cover up. Makenzie saw his jaw tighten, then his eyes slowly dragged up to meet hers again.
âWasnât good for you?â
Makenzie felt her insides scramble all over again at the thought of their encounter
âIt was great actually,â she said brazenly.Â
âThen why hide in the bathroom?â
âI wasnât hiding, I was thinking,â suddenly feeling overexposed, she began to search around the living room for her shirt. âWhere did that shirt go?â
âWhy?â his eyes followed her around the room as she began her search
âBecause I canât just walk around your place half-naked.â
Romans' gaze roved over her again. âWhy?â
Makenzie stared at him in disbelief, âHow many push-ups is it gonna take for you to help me find my shirt?â
Roman finally stretched to his feet. When he took a few steps toward her, she felt like sheâd shrunk a few inches. â1000â
âYou canât be serious.â
He closed the distance between them once more, and in a gentle move, he lifted his hand to hold her chin up, forcing her to maintain eye contact. âYou should lose the shorts too. I wanna see all of youâ
Makenzieâs skin tingled where he was touching her. Quietly, she asked, âAre you gonna be naked too, or just me?â
Roman was silent. For a moment, he didnât say anything. And then a slow, heated smile spread over his lips. âIf you want me naked, you have to promise not to go run and hide in the bathroom again.â
Makenzie met his stare with a flirtatious smile and reached for the waistband of her shorts and pulled them off. She tossed the garment somewhere over her shoulder. âYour turn.â
His smile grew. âAs you wish.â
Roman made stripping an art form. Makenzie thought heâd been sexy before, but that was nothing compared to watching him get naked. Her mouth went dry when Roman reached for the hem of his shirt with teasing slowness, drew it overhead. When he tossed it to the side with a lazy flick, her eyes widened.
Maybe there were benefits to personal trainers after all, she thought. They looked pretty damn good naked. Roman soon distracted her again by tugging down the waistband of his shorts. If sheâd thought his torso was mouth-watering, it was nothing compared to what came next.
Roman held her gaze. He kept it as he stepped out of his shorts and kicked them easily to the side, where his shirt was.Â
He was the sexiest thing sheâd ever seen.
Makenzieâs heart was about to give out at any second. Either that or set a new world record. She stared at him open-mouthed.
Just when she thought he couldnât do anything else that would get her going, he did. He chuckled. A low, deep, manly sound that Makenzie instantly became hooked on. Roman laughed, and those intense, dark eyes of his crinkled at the sides.
âAre you gonna stare at me for the rest of the night or get in the bed with me?â
âWhat happened to sleeping on the couch?â she questioned
âFuck the couch. Youâre in my bed tonight. No buts either. I donât want any unless it's yours up in the air. Got it?â
Makenzie, dumbstruck, just nodded.
âGood.â
And with that, he reached for her.
Makenzie saw him coming, though, and this time, she was more than ready. She met him halfway.
When his mouth descended on hers, she was pressing up on her toes, eager to meet him. He kissed her roughly, urgently. One of his hands wrapped around her curls, tangling in it and pulling it back not so gently, forcing her to tilt her face upward so he could plunder her lips with his own.
When Makenzie felt his arm wrap around her waist, pulling her up against his body, she moaned.
God, the sensation. Her skin rubbed against his hard, firm body, setting hers on fire. Her breasts pressed up against his body, causing her nipples to harden as they rubbed against him.
She moaned, her thighs clenching together as her stomach registered the hot, throbbing, velvety feel of his erection between them. A delicious ache began to grow between her legs, and she let her thighs part, grinding down gently against one of his when he slipped it between them.
Roman tore their lips apart, breathing heavily. He stared down at her, eyes dark and heavy.
âFuck,â he whispered raggedly. â I can feel you on my thigh.â
She was so wet she could feel her other set of lips drowning in her own pool of wetness.
âI think we should go to the bedroom. Donât you?â Makenzie's gaze was on his lips. She reached up, her fingers tangling in his hair.
He didnât answer. Just leaned forward and kissed her again. It was in a series of hard kisses, ass squeezes, and soft moans that Roman maneuvered her from the living area to his bedroom. In the end, heâd given up trying to steer her backwards and had simply bent, yanked her into his arms, and picked her up.
âShit!â Makenzie had gasped, feeling the ground disappear. It was only for a few seconds, however. She was being pulled into his arms, and then in the next moment, she was tumbling through the air again, only this time, she landed on a soft surface. Roman toppled forward with her, catching himself above her on his forearms.
Makenzieâs lips parted in a saucy retort, but he was already on her, kissing her fiercely. Her eyes closed, and of their own accord, her fingers slid up and over his shoulders, then into his hair. Her heart thudded in her chest when she felt him shifting on top of her, his long, broad body settling between her thighs.
âRoman,â she breathed, kissing him back. âThis is crazy.â
âI know.â His voice was rough. So were his hands. His hands were everywhere. In her hair, on her chest, squeezing her breasts, and then thumbing over her nipples. Makenzie could barely keep up. Her body was one huge mess of sensation.
And still she wanted more.
Her thighs parted. Impatient, she wrapped her curvy legs around his waist. Romanâs lips had slid from her mouth to her neck. Then she felt it. Felt his thick and heavy erection settle right in the place she wanted him the most, she heard him groan.
âMakenzie.â
She was gasping by now. âYes?âÂ
Her pulse thundered in her ears. This was nuts. Sheâd never been this turned on before. Her body was screaming for the hard length she could feel the very beginning of, to be inside her.Â
âNot yet.â
She wrapped her arms around his neck, and her thighs tightened around him.
âYes, yet,â she countered breathlessly. âYes, now.â
He was resisting her. She could feel it. She was wrapped around him like a soft, curvy boa constrictor, and Roman was still trying to hold himself back. She could feel the tension in his body as he resisted her downward pull.
âRoman,â she protested, squirming under him. âDonât tease.â
Roman finally lifted his head. He withdrew enough to meet her eyes. Her chest rose and fell as she stared up at him with an eager face. His eyes were narrow. Dark.Â
âI want to taste you first. Get you readyâ
She shifted impatiently beneath him. Enough so that her warm, slippery cunt pushed up against the tip of his cock, sending a jolt of pleasure through her. It made her whimper, and him grunt. He glared down at her.
âDoes that feel like Iâm not ready?â She arched an eyebrow. âIâm ready to feel you inside of meâ
He looked down at her with a smirk. âHold on to me.â
Makenzie gasped when he began to sink inside of her, feeling the thick bulge of his length press up against her, searching for entry. She moaned, but he kissed her, silencing the sound and bearing down even more with his hips. Her fingers dug into his shoulders, her hips shifted, and suddenly, the pressure gave way, and he sank deep inside of her slippery folds.
Roman was breathing hard above her, his face tight with pleasure. âDamn,â he cursed, his eyes squeezing shut. She felt his hips flex again, and he pushed even deeper inside of her body.
Makenzieâs fingers sank deeper into the muscles of his shoulder. Beneath him, she made a small, whimpering protest
His eyes boring into hers, he reached down, squeezing her hip and holding her still beneath him. âAlmost in thereâ, he rasped, âyou good?â
She considered shaking her head. She really did. She didnât know if any more would fit inside her.
Roman had withdrawn, then sank inside of her again in one slow, deliberate thrust. All thoughts of objecting flew out of Makenzie's mind. Forget stopping. She was a fan of this, she realized. A big fan. A soft sigh left her lips, and she shot Roman a soft smile. âI amâŚso good.â
âYeah,â he replied, voice hoarse. âYou are.â
And with that, he gave one final thrust and sank home. Makenzieâs back arched, and her lips parted, but no sound left her mouth. Romans' grip on her hip tightened even further, and she could feel his eyes on her, watching her carefully. She was in heaven
âOhâŚshit,â she whispered raggedly. He was pressed up hard against her, completely embedded in her body and Makenzie was loving the sensation. She sucked in a shuddering breath. â Roman. Stay there. Just for a moment. Thatâs justâŚperfect.â
He stilled, holding her, letting her adjust. Finally, he murmured, âI could make it better.â
She laughed. Breathless, she finally relaxed back into his pillows. Her arms slid from his shoulders to his chest, and she gave him a playful push. âI doubt it,â she grinned. âThatâs what they all say.â
âTheyâre not all me. Stay still.â
This time, it was Makenzieâs turn to be surprised. Roman didnât withdraw like she expected. Instead, her mouth fell open in disbelief when he settled his weight on his forearms and began to grind his groin steadily into her own.
âOh, my-ohhh,â Makenzieâs hand shot to his shoulders, gripping them tightly as she felt the effects of his circling hips between her legs. Her body shuddered. He was hitting everything inside of her, she thought wildly. Every. Damn. Thing.
âGood?â He rasped above her, watching her face as she began to come undone.
âMm-hm!â
She was squirming now. Despite his death grip on her hip, Makenzie was trying to helplessly to meet his movements. As if reading her mind, the man between her thighs began to add a slow, steady rocking. As well as the tantalizing pressure on her sensitive clit, she felt the effects of him plunging softly into her welcoming cunt.
She was done for.
Makenzie barely lasted another minute of the exquisite torture before she gave a sharp cry and arched up beneath him, her body taut with pleasure. She gasped as she came, he heart thudding almost painfully in her chest and her body clamping down around Roman's steady thrusting.
âOh my, God,â she groaned, shuddering. âThatâs amazingâ
When she floated back down to earth, he was looking down at her with a smug expression.
âWhatâs that look for?â
His smirk only grew wider. âBecause. If you thought that was good, just wait until we really get started.â
And despite the fact that sheâd just come, Makenzieâs heart gave an excited little flutter.
This time, she didn't question Roman. She just surrendered.
âAlright, Makenzie, youâre doing well, just one more set.â Jimmy's calming voice fades into the back of Makenzie's mind as she went through the sequence of workouts.
Ever since her sensual sleepover with Roman, sheâd been pushing herself the extra mile. Although the assistant coach was nowhere near as fiery as Roman was, for once, Makenzie wasnât letting the change in style affect her own drive.
Sheâd been pushing herself. Hard.
âDoing great, Makenzie. Keep it up.â Jimmy gave her shoulder a pat and left her to continue her leg curls in peace.Â
âShoot,â she gasped, letting the weight fall back down onto the machine. Makenzie collapsed forward, stretching her legs out. They felt like jelly after the grueling strength routine sheâd soldiered through that day. But sheâd made it,
She reached for her water bottle and looked around the gym, taking note of the others there with her. Her eyes passed over the room several times before she realized that she was actually looking for Roman. She shook her head at herself, biting her lip to stop herself from smiling.
Head in the game, she told herself. She had work to do.
Makenzie knew she needed to focus. She had to push herself. Her birthday photoshoot was looming, and she was determined to look her absolute best. She could finally take some time off work and focus on the things sheâd been neglecting.
Things like her sex life.
The thought flashed through her mind before she could stop it, and before she knew it, she was reminiscing about her recent experience beneath Roman Reigns' talented hands. She swallowed hard. The man had the meanest mouth sheâd met, but when it came to using it in the bedroom, sheâd immediately forgiven him. That mouth was good at doing much more than just telling her off in the gym.
Blowing out a long breath, Makenzie stretched to her feet. The thought of Romanâs smart mouth had reminded her of an earlier thought. Sheâd decided that in order to meet her goals, she wanted to pick up on some nutritional advice too.Â
Sheâd come to boot camp today, intending on asking Roman if he could point her in the right direction. She told herself it had nothing to do with trying to get him alone, either.
Nothing at all.
âAlright, folks, thatâs us for the day. Iâll be locking up in fifteen. Make sure you grab everything on the way out; otherwise, the nearest charity will thank you for your kind donation.â
A ripple of low laughter met Jimmyâs call. It was closing time.
Just then, Makenzie saw the man she needed to talk to. Romanâs broad, unmistakable shoulders appeared in the corridor just to the side of the gymâs entry and then disappeared once more.
He was headed for the office.
âThanks, Jimmy!â Makenzie waved to the other coach and he gave her a friendly nod. âYou mind if I just catch up with Roman for a second?â
âIt's your funeral.â
Makenzie paused. âHm. Heâs in one of those moods?â
Jimmy nodded, picking up a rag and cleaning off a treadmill while he spoke. âHe might need a woman's touch to pull him out of it,â Jimmy winked, chuckling. âBecause heâs been a downright asshole to everyone else.â
Makenzie bit her lip. After a moment, she added, âSo if Iâm not here tomorrow, call the police and tell them to check the bathrooms for my remains.â
Jimmy laughed, waving her away. â Go on, girl. I got you.â
âThanks. See you tomorrow.â
Makenzie ducked out of the gymâs strength training room, plodding down the same corridor that sheâd seen Roman disappear down moments earlier. She came to the door of the office. It was ajar. Feeling slightly nervous, she pushed a palm flat up against it and pushed.
âRoman?â
He didnât look up when she poked her head into his office. Makenzie paused, taking in the sight of him. He wasnât dressed for coaching. He wore slacks and a crisp, collared shirt. She swallowed, wondering if there was a single outfit on earth that this man did not look drop-dead gorgeous in.
Probably not
âRoman.â She tried again, louder this time. His head jerked upwards.
âHi,â Makenzie waved at him sheepishly. âAre you busy?â
His eyes narrowed. âWhat do you want?â
Oh. Well, okay then, Makenzie thought. His bothered tone took her back for just a moment. Then her instincts kicked in, and she frowned at him.Â
âIs that how you address everyone who comes into your office to ask for your help?â
Roman's lips thinned into a tight line. He nodded at her. âCome in.â
âThank you,â she said, pushing the door fully open and stalking inside. Makenzie didnât miss the way his eyes scanned down and across her chest, then over her thighs. She was having trouble keeping her own gaze on his face. The open vee of his shirt left a small, alluring part of his chest exposed and she remembered briefly what itâd felt like to press her lips to the exact same spot.
Focus, Makenzie. Focus.
âI need some diet advice.â
Romansâ eyes lifted back up to her face. He blinked. âYeah. You do.â
âExcuse me?â
âI can count the times Iâve ordered pizza on one finger.â His face was completely straight. âAlmost a decade of eating clean, and the one night you stay in my apartment, that all turns to shit the following day. So yes, Makenzie. I think you do need some diet advice.â
She stared at him, slightly amazed. âYou have the social skills of an ape,â she breathed. âI still donât know how you made it this far in life.â
At that, Romansâ eyes crinkled in the corners.
âGod Dammit,â she glared at him. âYouâre pulling my leg again, aren't you?â
He snorted softly. âYeah, but you could still use some diet advice. The fact that you asked me where the whipped cream was halfway through a blow job is a dead giveaway.â
If her skin wasnât the shade of creamy chocolate, Makenzie would have been pink.
She choked out, âI was being creative.â
âVery creative,â he winked, âBut that's too much sugar if you want to be in shape for your birthday.â
âI think I should have asked Jimmy for advice.â
At that, Romans face lost all sense of humor. He frowned.
âWhat kind of help do you want?â
Makenzie hid her smile. His tone held the slight hint of jealousy. Not letting on that sheâd pulled the oldest trick in the book on him, and that itâd worked, she shrugged. âYou know. Recipes. General advice. Extra workouts to do at home-â
âYou donât need extra workouts.â
She arched an eyebrow. âYou told me to push myself.â
âYou can push yourself when Iâm in the gym to watch you-â Roman paused. With an air of restraint, he muttered. â When Iâm done handling business here, Iâll tell you how to push yourself. Iâll push buttons you didnât know you had. And I can help you with a diet.â
She looked at him with a sly smile. âI donât think I want to wait on you, Roman. There are plenty of others who can help me. I just want some names from you. Thatâs all.â
He didnât budge. Roman Reigns. Thatâs the only name you need to know.â
Makenzie couldnât believe this. She stared at him from across his desk, contemplating his stubborn refusal to give her what she was asking for. She was still standing, looking down at him with a mixed feeling of delight and dismay in the pit of her stomach. Delight because he clearly wanted to help her, and dismay because she really couldnât afford to wait.
âRoman. I really appreciate you wanting to help me, I really do. But I need someone who is around now.â
âYou can wait a few days.â
She frowned. âNo, I really canât.â
âLetâs say I give you a meal plan right now. I bet you won't even follow it past a few days before you're back to eating junk.â
Makenzie glared at him. Arrogant man. Irritated and feeling a little challenged, she leaned forward and planted an open hand on the paper heâd looked away from her to study. Slowly, Romanâs head rose, and his gaze met hers.
âYouâre rude,â she told him. âAnd I donât appreciate you thinking that I canât handle a simple diet.â
âI just donât think youâll actually stick to it, that's all.â
Makenzie exhaled, but didnât look away. Neither did she. Finally, eyes sharp with determination. âWanna bet?â
Roman glared at her for what seemed like an eternity. Eventually, he leaned away from her. Makenzie didnât know what she was expecting him to do, but it definitely wasnât to stretch to his feet. And she most definitely did not anticipate him coming around the desk to grasp her chin with his finger and thumb. She stared at him, the feel of his fingers sinking into her skin.
âWhat has gotten into you?â He murmured, studying her face. âMe riding your ass for weeks didnât inspire this kind of reaction. So why the sudden interest?â
Makenzie swallowed. âNothing.â
âRight.â Roman's tone was flat-out disbelieving. âThatâs why youâre on the brink of harassing your personal trainer in his office, ânothingâ,â he mimicked her. âBullshit.â
Makenzie relented. His thumb had shifted now, it was sliding along her jaw, then his fingers were brushing her sensitive skin behind her ear. And all the while, he was staring at her like he couldnât decide whether to put her over his knee or kiss her.
And if she were honest, Makenzie didnât know which one she found more appealing either.
âI just want to be ready,â she murmured unsteadily. His fingers were playing havoc with her voice box. And her nerves. And her⌠everything. She gulped, âStop that.â
âStop what?â
âI canât think when youâre touching me like that.â
âGood.â
Roman leaned towards her. Makenzie saw it happening in slow motion. She saw his handsome face lower itself towards her and felt his fingers slide from her jaw to her throat, keeping her in place. She could have stopped it. But she didnât
Instead, Makenzieâs lips parted, and she met him with an open and welcoming mouth.
He kissed her hard. Makenzie moaned into the feel of his mouth slanting across hers and pressed up against him, eager for more. She was fast learning that with Roman, there was no other pace. When it came to her and to him, there were only two guarantees.
Fast. And hot,
âYou. Are. Infuriating.â
Romansâ voice was rough. Between kisses that all seemed to melt into one. Makenzie realized his hands had left her throat and instead roved downwards. She was still wearing her workout clothes, still damp with sweat, but Roman didnât seem to care. His long fingers were at her breasts in a moment and she moaned when his large hands cupped and rolled her soft curves through the support of her sports bra.
She pulled back, breathing heavily. âYouâre hardly a cup of sweet tea yourself.â
In an instant, Roman had shifted. Heâd bent and wrapped his arms around her waist. Makenzie knew what was coming. She braced herself, eyes widening. âRoman, wait-ahh!â
Heâd swept her into his arms.Â
She gasped, flinging her arms around his neck. In the next second, her thundering pulse was growing even more rapid underneath the slick warmth of his tongue. Makenzie gasped, only half aware that they were moving. When the room spun, and her back thudded against the wall, she realized heâd pinned her just beside the door sheâd walked through a few minutes earlier.
Which was still wide open.
âRoman the door.â
âFuck it,â he growled against her neck. âWrap your legs around me, Makenzie.â
She sucked in a shallow breath, her thighs clamping around his waist. His lips moved from her neck to her collarbone, then to the swell of her breast just visible above her bra. Makenzie shuddered, arching up against the feathered warm touch of his lips against her skin.
Against him, she shifted; she felt a familiar ache begin to bloom.
Before Makenzie could put words behind her bodyâs craving, Roman worked his way up and once again, found her lips.
He withdrew, breaking the kiss and looking down at her. His breath was heavy, rapid, much like hers. Makenzie stared up at him, the reason for her visit in the first place all but forgotten as she waited expectantly for his next move.
But it never came.
Instead, Roman leaned forward, pressed one more kiss to her forehead, and plainly said, â30 days, no sweets, not even a cheat meal, and no complaining when I push you âtoo hardâ while Iâm coaching you.â
âA month!â she sputtered out, âNo sweets?!?! Are you crazy?â
Makenzie blinked rapidly, incredulous. She licked her lips, suddenly furious with herself for being sucked into Roman's ruse so easily. Swallowing hard, she pushed at his chest. He moved back too easily. He was expecting her to push him away.
Roman just stood there calmly watching her irritated reaction to the terms he just laid out
âCanât handle it?â
Makenzie stood there for a second, stunned into silence. But then her shoulders squared. She lifted her chin and met his amused gaze.
âFine,â she said. âThirty days. Iâll do it.â
He smirked, running his eyes over her generous curves. When he met her gaze, it was with a dark look that had nothing to do with their casual conversation

Makenzie relaxed into the tub of steaming hot water and sighed. God, she ached all over
He was an asshole. An absolute pain in the ass.
A demanding, hellbound, ripped, sexy-
Asshole, Mackenzie reminded herself sternly. Roman Reigns was a bona fide asshole.
She sighed again and shifted in the water, barely stifling a groan when her tired muscles protested at the small movement
Yes, her trainer was most definitely an asshole. Sheâd never felt this level of fatigue in her entire life. She winced, knowing that if she was in this much pain after the workout, tomorrow would only be worse.
Stupid Roman.
In the safety of her own bathtub, Makenzieâs thoughts ventured to places she wouldnât even let them go while face-to-face with the man. But here, within the comfort of her own four walls, she was less restrained,
A soft sigh had escaped her lips before she could even summon the urge to smother it. Makenzie's lips curved into a smile as she relaxed even more, her hands moving gently beneath the water,
She traced the soft skin of her thigh, her smile growing when she felt the added firmness that hadnât been there five weeks ago.
Her body had adjusted quickly. After only a week under her new trainer's guidance, sheâd noticed a marked difference. And the longer sheâd stayed with him, the more her body began to change.
Mackenzieâs lower lip crept into her mouth as her hands moved upward, trailing over her stomach. She felt the slight roundness at the bottom, stroked the curvy sides of her pronounced waist, and smiled when she reached the swell of her heavy breast
Her dark nipples had already hardened, peeping above the water despite her fatigue. She smiled, reaching up to roll them with her thumbs. She shuddered when pleasure feathered down and out from her own touch, her thighs parting automatically.
Mackenzie grimaced when the movement cost her several twinges of pain. Reality swept back in when she remembered the reason she was naked and soaking in her bathtub
Roman Reigns
âFreaking assholeâ, she muttered under her breath. âHeâs insane.â
If she were honest with herself, she wasnât averse to the guy. She just wasnât in the mood to admit that she felt anything other than animosity to the man who had spent the last five weeks showing her the meaning of the phrase âno pain, no gainâ.
Mackenzie had signed up for the boot camp on her own accord. There had been no self-deprecation behind it. No vague hints from friends- nothing like that. It had all been for her. As long as sheâd been kicking and breathing, her mother had told her she had a mind of her own. There were very few things that Makenzie wasnât game to do.
Including signing up for a notoriously difficult boot camp five weeks before her 30th birthday photoshoot.
âGodâ, Mackenzie grunted, pushing herself upright. â Is it meant to hurt this much?â
She pushed a stray curl out of her face, annoyed. Without warning, the handsome face of the man whoâd put her in this predicament flashed through her mind. Her lips twisted
Asshole
And it wasnât like he hadnât warned her, alongside her fellow bootcampers, either. From day one, heâd been clear about what exactly he was going to put her and everyone else through.
Roman Reigns' first words echoed in her mind.
âIf you're looking for an encouraging speech, you should leave right now.â
Makenzie had stifled the urge to roll her eyes, but the tall, clearly built man standing in front of her group hadnât been anything other than dead serious. He continued his blunt introduction, âIf youâre looking for someone to hold your hand and tell you that fucking up is okay, you should leave right now. Iâm not here to be your therapist or watch over your shoulder when youâre in the kitchen making the tough decisions. You have to do your part.â
He stopped a couple of steps away from Makenzie. She took him in; all of him. The bronzed skin, broad shoulders, fine features. He looked like heâd been carved from marble and then dipped in whatever golden tan mixture it was that god reserved for a select few, lucky souls. Roman was devastatingly handsome. She wasnât blind
Well, if she was going to die via boot camp, at least itâd be with eye candy benefits.
He glanced over at her, meeting her eyes and grazed down her body.
She swallowed. Was it just her, or did his eyes linger longer on her than on anyone else? She blinked, the moment passed and he resumed talking.
âIâm not here to be your mother. So, if youâre looking for that, you should turn around and walk your ass out the door.â
His assistant, a man names Jimmy, laughed, crossing his strong arms over his chest. âTell them what youâre here for Roman.â
The handsome man glanced over at his partner, and the corner of his mouth pulled up
âIâm here to get that ass in shape!â
Makenzie blinked away the memory. Her ass was in shape, alright. Her body showed more definition, her curves had either shrunk or grown in the right proportions, and she was fitter than sheâd been in a long time.
But sheâd also gained something she hadnât counted on
A little more than a passing interest in Roman Reigns. It might have just been her imagination, but sometimes his hands lingered longer than she thought they should have. Sheâd look up and catch his eyes on her- but only because sheâd been looking up to find him in the first place. She shook her head, rueful. Maybe he just enjoyed seeing a curvy woman in his gym for once. Every time Makenzie walked in the doors, she noticed there werenât many built like her inside the four walls.
She sighed. The water was getting cold
Suddenly, her phone beeped. Makenzie glanced over to the small stool sheâd left it atop of, squinting.
Flash flood warning.
âHuhâ, she murmured, reaching for her towel. âBad weather.â
Shrugging, she began to lever herself out of the bath, trying to keep her groans of pain behind gritted teeth. Just a few more weeks of this, she told herself. A few more weeks and sheâd get her photoshoot over and done with. No more gym, ice cream Fridays, and thankfully no more Roman Reigns
Just a few more weeks.
âCome on Makenzie, get those knees up.â
âI-â She took a deep breath. âAm.â
The asshole was in an especially assholey mode today. Makenzie grunted, her teeth grinding together.
âNo talking, Makenzie. Just do it.â
âI-canât!â Makenzie gasped, doubling over. She sucked in huge gulps of air, lightheaded. âOh my GodâŚI need to breathe.â
âDid I tell you to stop? Get back in the game, Makenzie. NOWâ
Makenzie silently vowed that when she caught her breath, she would kill this man. Either that or refuse to pay him. Sheâd see just how he felt about that. Asshole.
âMove Makenzie.â
Makenzie couldnât take any more. Seething, her head jerked up and she glared at her looming trainer.
âGet out of my face, Roman. Go ride someone else, for godâs sakes,â she snapped. She dashed the sweat from her brow chest, still heaving. âIâm just catching my breath!â
He stood straight and crossed his arms. Despite her temper, her stomach flipped at the look in his eyes. âWhat did you say?â
She swallowed. Instead of answering, she looked at the ground, suddenly aware of every eye in the room being trained in her direction. âNothingâ, she breathed out.
âThat's what I thought. Now get those damned knees up and keep going.â He wasnât done with her, though.
âYou want to look good for that photoshoot or not?â
Makenzie glared at him. âThat's low.â
He shrugged. âItâs the truth. So do you?â
âYou know I do. But that doesnât mean I canât just take a short break.â
Roman shook his head, stepping closer towards her. Makenzie became aware of just how broad and tall he was. She was no shrimp, but he was easily a foot taller than her, and much, much more solid. He looked down at her, his eyes dark.
âThese little moments are what make the difference, Makenzie. When you keep going even though you donât want to. When you grind through another set, even when you donât think you can. You think getting gains is easy? It's not. The moments you keep going, even when you want to quit, those are the moments you make them.â
Makenzie fell silent. She heard him. She understood him. But in that moment, all she was really aware of was how close to her he was standing. Roman up close was a potent mix of man. She swallowed, dragging her brain back to his words.
It didnât help, though. Because in the next moment, the man that Makenzie thought was a hard assed, hard-nosed trainer, reached out and gently hooked a finger beneath her chin, tilting her face up till their eyes met.
For just a moment, she saw his gaze soften
âGet back in line, Makenzie. I donât ask, but Iâm asking you now. Understand?â
She stared at him, dumbfounded. The frustration sheâd felt earlier was fading. As if sensing it, Roman stepped even closer and leaned forward to murmur in her ear.
âI donât know whatâs got you down today, but shake it off. Youâve got more to give, I know you do. Whatever it is thatâs bugging you, come and work it off with us. With me. Youâll feel better after.â
Makenzie knew she was off her game. Woke up late, work was aggravating, and forgotten to eat. She had no energy.
Sighing, Makenzie slumped forward. âAlright, one more set, but if I fall out, youâre gonna be the one carrying me out of here.â
His laugh was low, eyes glinting with mischief, âDonât threaten me with a good time.â
With that, he finally stepped back, giving her much-needed space. Without another word, he turned and headed towards the opposite end of the gym, leaving her with a newfound fire inside of her.
Jaw set, she powered through the rest of her sets, every rep fueled as much by stubborn pride as by strength. By the time she racked the final weight, her arms trembled, but the satisfied smile on her face said sheâd won her own battle.
Grabbing her towel and bag, she headed toward the exit, sweat-damp curls sticking to her skin â tired, yes, but more alive than when sheâd walked in.
That's when he appeared again, leaning casually against the wall by the exit. His gaze swept over her, lingering just long enough to make her pulse quicken, and a slow, teasing smile curved his lips.
âLook at you,â he murmured, voice low and rough with amusement. âDidnât think you had it in you⌠But now Iâm wondering what else youâre capable of.â
She shot him a glare.âCareful. Keep pushing me, one day Iâm gonna be strong enough to beat your assâ, she said with a promise
He threw his hands up in mock surrender, â Oohh, me and you one on one, canât wait for our first match,â he said with a wink
She rolled her eyes, trying to hide the faint smile on her lips as she brushed past him, making her way to her car. Her heart was still racing from the workout and from him, but a smile couldnât help but stretch across her face.
Other bootcamp members passed her, waving as she made her way through the parking lot. She raised her hand to them distractedly, preoccupied by Romanâs flirtatious actions.
When Makenzie unlocked her door and slid behind the wheel, however, the engine wouldnât turn over. She tried the keys three more times. Still no luck. Hungry, sore, tired, flirty personal trainer wandering around in her mind. How could the day get any worse? Makenzie squeezed her eyes shut, willing herself to be patient. A few seconds later, there was a knock on her window.
Startled, she looked up to see the smiling face of a woman in her class. Kim. The blonde-haired woman smiled and motioned for her to open the door.
âIs everything alright?â
Makenzie shook her head, pointing towards the hood of the car. âI donât know what's up. It's just not starting.â
The kind woman bit her lip. âHmm. Wait a second. Iâm not gonna be any help, but I think I know someone who can help. Wait just a minute.â
Makenzie nodded, her relief palpable. She shot Kim a grateful look. âThank you.â
âItâs no problem, honey. You wait right here.â
Makenzie was thanking her lucky stars for Kimâs good Samaritan act. That was right up until the woman came back
Makenzieâs stomach dropped
Behind her was the last person she wanted to see. Roman.
âRomanâs a qualified mechanic,â Kim said, smiling. âAnd he also happens to remember the promise he made our mother that heâd always listen to his older sister.â
Makenzie stared at Kim. âSister?â
Kimâs eyes grew wider. âYes. I donât know why but he doesnât like to tell people,â she whispered. âI think Iâm too nice for him. Might ruin his image.â
Roman was casually leaning against the car, devilish smirk in place. Makenzie glanced at him, then quickly back to Kim. âYour personality never seemed to rub off on him?â
Kim seemed to think this was hilarious. She laughed, then reached out to give Makenzieâs arm a warm pat. âI'd better go. Husbandâs waiting for me in the car. See you at the next torture session.â
And just like that, Kim disappeared. Makenzie swallowed, then looked up at Roman. He was gazing at her with a smug expression.
âLooks like someone needs rescuing,â he teased. He brushed past her and before she could give out a smart response, he was behind the wheel, flicking the key and then searching for the lever for her car's hood. She watched as the hulking man slid easily from her car and moved towards the front.
Overhead, thunder clapped. Dark clouds rolled across the sky, rumbling overhead as distant thunder growled like a warning. She suddenly remembered the flash flood warning from last night. Urging citizens to be prepared for what tomorrow's storms could bring.
âYour battery is dead. I think you left your lights on.â
Makenzieâs cheeks burned with embarrassment. Of all days, how could she have forgotten such a simple task?
âI donât have any jumper cables on me. Do you have insurance?â
Makenzie nodded
âGood. Call them.â
Makenzie pulled out her phone but before she could dial the number for her insurance company, her phone flashed black and died. Her eyes widened
Really? She thought to herself
âWhat?â Roman set the hood back down, clicking it into place. His were on her.
âI-uh, my phone just died.â
He stared at her for a long moment then let out a deep laugh.
âYour day is going terribly right now.â
Makenzie stared at him in disbelief. But unfortunately, he was right. Hungry, sore, tired, no phone, and an annoying personal trainer as her witness.
The first fat drops of rain spattered the windshield.
âYou donât have to rub it in, you know.â
âLet's be real, Makenzie, even if you could reach someone, the storm is about to be here, so no one's gonna be in a rush to come save you.â
As if to further prove his point, the rain fell harder now, drumming against the roof of the car and soaking the pavement around them. Thunder rumbled close enough to make the air vibrate, and the wind whipped her hair across her face. In a few seconds, she was soaked.
âLock the car and come with me,â he yelled out over the rain.
âBut I-â
âI said, lock the car and come with me, stop being stubborn, you can come to my place, it's not far.â
And that's how a very frustrated and very wet Makenzie managed to end up in the passenger seat of her personal trainer's car.
Back at Romans' placeâŚâŚ.
Makenzie hung up the phone and gazed out the window. It was pouring. She watched as the storm raged across the city. Sheets of rain lashed against the windows, and the wind howled through the gaps in the building, rattling the panes and sending leaves and debris tumbling across the streets below.
âSo?â
The sound of Roman's voice startled her, and she looked up from where she was sitting at the windowsill. Heâd changed. And showered. His long locks were wet, and droplets of water still clung to his smooth, bronzed chest. Makenzie pursed her lips. She met his gaze with her own.
âNothing, no service in this weather.â
âTold you.â
âWell,â she retorted, âwhen a company tells you they offer twenty-four-hour roadside assistance, you tend to believe what they say.â
He shrugged. âYea only if youâre gullible.â
Makenzie pinched the bridge of her nose. This man. He might have been something else in the gym, but what he had in muscles clearly deprived him of manners. She sighed. âIâll call a cab. I can get out of your hair.â
Roman arched an eyebrow. âYou do see the weather in front of you, right? Theyâll be out of commission in weather like this.â
âIâll bet you they wonât.â
He shrugged. âBet you fifteen push-ups theyâre not.â
Five minutes later, Makenzie had lost the bet. She handed Romanâs phone back to him with protest, âI can only do like ten push-ups max.â
He didnât even hesitate. âGuess you better stop trying to quit in the middle of workouts then.â
With an exasperated sigh, she threw her hands up to her head. âIâm hungry, Iâm tired, Iâm sore, and Iâm already tired of being around you.â Her tone was blunt.
âSounds like somebody needs a snack and a nap,â he drawled, eyes flicking over her with a mixture of amusement and concern. âLucky for you, Iâve got food here⌠and a couch you can collapse on if youâre done yelling at me.â And with that, he padded back out of the living room.
âIâm not staying with you,â Makenzie called out to his retreating back. A really good looking back. âIâm going home. Where I donât have to put up with my satanic personal trainer.â
âBet you ten more pushups weâre going to have a sleepover tonight.â
The weather turned even shittier.
Only an hour after Romans prediction, the weather had got even worse and even Makenzieâs best friend had wormed out of picking her up until the morning. Annoyed, sheâd barely been able to take what she was fast learning was Romanâs smug-ish, smirk-ish, smile.
âYouâre not smart, you know.â
Heâd come out into the living area where she was perched sulkily on his couch. His arms were full of blankets, sheets and a pillow. With a flourish, he dumped them on her lap. She was wearing an oversized shirt heâd lent her, and a pair of shorts. Sheâd showered and eaten was beginning to feel a little sleepy.
âI disagree,â Roman sank down beside her, jostling her with his weight as he did so. â But feel free to tell me your ill informed opinion of why you think Iâm not a smart man.â
Makenzie pushed the blankets off shooting him a disgrunted look. âCoercing a woman into exercise is the dumbest move any man could make.â She huffed. âThirty push-ups? Iâm not doing it.â
âDefinitely not in the shape your in.â
She glared at him, âyou are so rude.â
He shrugged. âIâm right. I could get you into that shape thoughâ
Makenzie snorted. âPlease. Not without getting yourself strangled in the process.â
âYou keep threatening me with bodily harm like I canât pick you up and throw youâ
Makenzie didnât respond, she looked out the window suddenly imagining the idea of him picking her up and wrapping her legs around his waist. Meanwhile Roman picked up the remote, turning on the television in front of them. She glanced out the corner of her eye, studying his chiseled features for a moment.
âWhatever you want to ask, just ask. Stare at me any longer and my nose will start growing.â
She flushed glancing away. âThanks. For everything. I just realized I havenât said thank you at all.â
âWow I thought my heroic duties were gonna go unnoticedâ
She rolled her eyes, âdonât get to full of yourself, just trying to be politeâ
Somewhere along the way the pair were engrossed in movie. Roman had relaxed and so had she. She wasnât aware they were sitting so close until his thigh brushed her knee.
âSorry.â
Makenzie felt that warm feeling from her face, spread through her body. She swallowed. âItâs fine.â
A few minutes later Roman looked at her sideways. She could feel his gaze. She glanced at him. âWhat?â
He was silent. Finally he murmured. âIâm sorry.â
âYouâre sorry?â
âYeaâ
âFor?â
âAlways riding you in the gym. I can tell I really got under your skin today. Thought you were gonna leaveâ
She gave him a disbelieving look. He smiled but it wasnât smug. This time it was genuine. Makenzie felt her stomach react to that smile.
âAre you always such a jerk in the gym?â
He actually snorted at that one. âA jerk?â
âYea a jerk,â she repeated. âA loud, pushy, annoy-
âOkay I get itâ, he said drily. âAnd no. Iâm not. Maybe with you more than others.â
âAnd can I ask why of all your loyal subjects, you decided to single me out?â
Romanâs smile faded a bit. He gazed at her intently. Mackenzie felt compelled to maintain his intense gaze. She couldnât look away. His voice was almost a whisper when he spoke again.
âBecause you got guts. I push you because I know you can do more. You push back with a smart ass response. Canât lie, I like seeing you fired up.â
Mackenzie was suddenly aware of her own breath. Why was she breathing so loud? She could hear her own heart pounding in her ears. She swallowed, suddenly having a dire need for water.
âYou like picking on me?â
With a gleam in his eyes, âI'm not trying to pick on you, I just didnât want you to leave.â
He was closer than he had been a second ago. When had he gotten that close? Makenzie stared at him, confused. This was Roman. Pain in the ass, mean, but looks-wise, he was God's gift to women. But also her personal trainer. Who was supposed to be helping her get in shape, not be the one in her late-night fantasies.
âWhat are you doing?â she whispered, rooted in place on the couch. The couch in his apartment. The couch where they were supposed to be watching a movie and waiting for the heavy storm to pass.
âThe only thing Iâve wanted to do since you first walked into my gymâ
And with that, he kissed her.
Mackenzie gasped, shock and lust passing through her when their lips met. Pure fire pressed into her soft lips, and suddenly, all she could feel, touch, and taste was Roman. Her eyes fluttered closed, and she moaned softly into his mouth.
And then she felt his tongue. She couldnât help herself as more moans left her mouth when Roman's confident tongue swept across the seam of her lips. His tongue pushed softly forward, meeting hers with a tiny flick that had her pressing forward, eager for more.
The next few minutes were a blur. Soft moans and low sounds of pleasure and rushed breaths all melded into one moment, and Makenzie managed to wriggle her way into Roman's lap. Her fingers weaved through his hair, her lips eagerly pressed against his, and her thighs straddled his lap.
Suddenly, she pulled back.
âWhat are weâŚdoing?â, she rasped, â I donât even like youâ
She might not have liked his fierce training style, but she liked the way he kissed her like no one had kissed her before.
He held a firm hand to her lower back and pulled her body snug to his.
âI bet 50 push-ups that by the end of the night, when Iâm finished, youâll be in love with meâ
And he kissed her all over again.
Eventually, kissing turned to more. Her hands slid down his chest, and his slid up her thighs. In an almost mad flurry of movement, Makenzie had slid her hands down the front of his pajama pants and discovered that an impressive physique wasnât the only thing Roman was packing.
âOh my, go-â his lips muffled her words.
Mackenzieâs reaction to Romans' thick length was cut short, but when his hands began to pull upwards at the hem of her shirt, she let him pull it over her head in one hurried movement.
He broke the kiss just long enough to take in some quick breaths, his eyes dropping to her bare chest. The lust in his eyes was unmistakable; his eyes roamed over her exposed chest with a desire that almost filled the room.
Her fingers wrapped around the head of his shaft, twisting and rubbing the sensitive end in a way that had him letting out needy grunts. Which had to be the sexiest sounds she had ever heard in her life. Her eyes flickered to his throat, where she saw the frantic beat of his pulseâa confession of the fire building inside of him.
âAhh shitâ
Sheâd slid her thumb directly over his head, making short, rapid circles across his slick head. Roman swore, and his head arched back again. She resumed her previous pattern of twisting and pumping his thick hard on.
âMakenzie.â His voice was hoarse. His fingers wrapped around her wrist. âYou want me to cum in your hands or whatâ
A mischievous smile tugged at her lips. âI wouldnât be mad if you did.
To prove her point, she squeezed him harder and stroked him faster. Roman swore. In a move that showed her just how strong he was, he hefted her upward, wrapped an arm around her and slid his hand down the front of her shorts.
Makenzieâs eyes widened when she felt his long fingers brush against her soaked pussy. She gasped.
In this position, she couldnât see anything. Heâd hefted her up so that she was still straddling his thighs, but her head was over his shoulder. She still had a grip on his length, could still stroke and pump him, but she could no longer see her own hand. His face was buried in her neck, his breath coming out in warm, rapid pants.
And his fingers had found her entrance and were steadily pushing in and out of her.
She gasped, squeezing him harder. Stars swam in her eyes
They were both hard and wet, in a rush to get to each other. They hadnât even bothered to strip. Instead, Roman had his hands stuffed in her shorts fingering her, and she had her hand stuffed in his pants pumping him.
She couldnât take much more. It was too much. His fingers felt too good. His length felt even better in her hands and it was only a few moments later that Makenzieâs hips began to arch back onto his fingers, pushing him deeper. She was moaning on the very edge.
Roman groaned into her neck, his entire body tense around her. In one swift movement, he removed his fingers from inside of her and found his way to her clit.
Makenzie jerked in his arms, crying out when he began to rapidly rub her sensitive clit. It was too much. She couldnât take any more. Surrendering, she wrapped her free hand around his shoulders, and her entire body went rigid. With a loud cry, she came.
Romanâs muffled groan at her release was followed by a sudden twitch in his hard length, and suddenly, she felt her fingers covered in his release.
He left his fingers inside her, still gently stroking her as she moaned and rocked against him, working out the last waves of pleasure.
Eventually, they both slid their hands free, and Makenzie sat back down on his lap. Their movements slowed, but the air around them still hummed with electricity. Neither spoke, both knowing that what had just happened was only the beginning of a very long night.
itâs never too late to start again. 5pm on a thursday can be your new monday. you donât have to wait until the new year to better yourself. time is an illusion, donât forget that. just because you woke up at 1pm, it doesnât mean you messed your whole day up and that you canât turn the mood around. itâs never too late to start again!!!
authors note: i think ya'll will be pleased with majority of this chapter. as far as the ending scene, let me know what ya'll think roman should do. i have it already planned, but i'm always so curious reading other perspectives. btw, they've been married almost four months, for context.
also, to those who want to know about the subplot of solana's bitch ass daddy plotting to kill roman....it's still a subplot. stay tuned.

Learning to be intimate is rewarding, but it is not always comfortable. As one woman said, âI kept myself safe, but I also kept myself alone.â Becoming intimate means peeling back the layers of protection to let someone in. It means going to the place where youâre comfortable and then taking one step more. One step, not twenty.
Solana must read the passage at least half a dozen times, sitting with the words, meditating with them and doing her best to cope with the discomfort sheâs experienced at various points while working her way through the book thatâs brought an equal amount of questions as it has answers.
She knew right away going into this section, Healthy Intimacy, that it would most likely be the hardest chapter for her. But not even for the reasons that she initially thought, reasons that would have been the case before a certain Roman Reigns entered her life.
Every day that passes with him seems to bring about a new level of comfort, a new slice of happiness, a new type of contentment.Â
She enjoys talking with him and being around him. She looks forward to his meeting her at the end of work and struggles with endless worry when he doesnât make it back home until the wee hours of the night.
His touch, whether thatâs his hand on her back or both hands on her waist as he holds her against him, no longer triggers an automatic tense, uncomfortable feeling. Somewhere along the way, the need to identify his touch as âsafeâ waned and was replaced with an automatic knowing. Like she knows that itâs okay for him to touch her, because sheâs safe. Because sheâs safe with him.Â
That, along with her continued and also growing attraction, has caused her to think more and more what it could be like to be with someone in that way. The thoughts have been fleeting, far and few over the years, typically followed up with abject horror. But latelyâŚ.lately sheâs been less and less scared and more and more hopeful.
Optimistic that maybeâŚ.just maybe, she could one day know what thatâs like. To have that experience in a healthy and non-traumatic way with a safe person. With someone who truly desires her in said healthy way.
SomeoneâŚ.someone like Roman.
Itâs scary and terrifying and exciting and nerve racking and moving and every other emotion to exist, but on top of all that, for the first time in her life, itâs a possibility for Solana.Â
And she wants to take that chance, even if doesnât work out, even if itâs not what she thought it would be. To be able to say she at least tried, to say that she overcame her fearsâŚit would be monumental.
It would feel like the breaking of mental and emotional chains.Â
And it starts today.
Closing up the book, Solana untangles her legs and marks her spot in her book. She gives Dulce a light pat on the head and walks into the bathroom. Opening up the drawer, her eyes land on the pair of scissors. Nothing fancy. Just a pair of regular scissors.
Solana takes a deep breath and grabs them.Â
Using one hand to let down her hair from the messy, half-effort bun, she gives her head a good shake. Once, twice, and then a third time. For a brief second, she hesitates, her fatherâs constant belittling returning to the surface.
âYou donât need short hair. Youâll look even fatter with it.â
Solana shuts her eyes as she thinks of all the times Roman has called her beautiful, has made her feel beautiful. The endless support from Bayley and Naomi. The borderline inappropriate comments form the twins almost every time she sees them.
It all brings an emotional smile to her face as she takes another deep breath.
One step, not twenty.
And she cuts.
________
Samantha can count on one hand in all of the years that sheâs known Roman Reigns the times that heâs surprised her with a visit.Â
Zero.
Heâs always always given her a heads up for his arrival or plans to visit, solely for the mere fact that Roman is a man who doesnât like to wait. When he wants pussy, he wants it then and now. And sheâs never been one to deny the Head of the Table anything heâs ever asked for.Â
So when she finds him sitting at her desk, feet propped up with an unreadable expression, it takes her off guard.Â
Only for a minute.Â
âI knew it was only a matter of time.â Samantha is quick to kick the door shut behind her, locking it right as she tosses her purse on the nearby chair. âYou canât go too long without me.â This fact alone is enough to make her cum right then and there. The fact that even with his roster of women he rotates through, she remains number one.Â
Roman knows where itâs at.Â
And him coming to her, at her job of all places, just proves it.
Eye dropping to his crotch, she licks her lips at the thought of that thick, beautiful dick in her mouth. Fuck, sheâs salivating at just the thought. âYou want me on my knees, daddy?â
Samantha starts to kick her shoes off when he finally breaks the silence.
âI want to know what you said to my wife.â
Samanthaâs smile drops in under a millisecond. Instantly, sheâs scowling. âWhat?â
Roman doesnât hesitate to repeat himself, every word perfectly enunciated with his heavy, baritone voice. âWhat did you say to my wife, Samantha?âÂ
ThisâŚ.this isnât how she was expecting this to play out, and it shows in the sudden stuttering, âIâI donâtââ
âShe came back from that bathroom upset, and I donât like seeing her upset, so Iâm only gonna ask you one more timeââ Samantha nearly jumps back into the door when he suddenly bangs his fist on her wooden desk and growls, âwhat did you say to her!â
Stammering, she answers with a combination of fear and desperation, âI justâI told her the truth.â
It seems to be the wrong answer, as Roman looks 5x angrier. âAnd what the fuck is that?â
Samantha gathers herself a little better, voice more even as she answers with misplaced confidence. âThat she could never please you. Not how I can.â And with foolish bravery, Samantha steps toward him. âThat youâll always come back to me.â
âYou fucking bitch.â
That makes her still with her movements. Heâs called her all kinds of names when theyâve fucked, and sheâs loved it, loves being fucked hard and rough, his preference. But thereâs something about this that she doesnât love.Â
Itâs because he sounds legitimately upset with her.
And that, in turn, upsets her, because he cannot seriously be upset that she said some shit to that little girl.
âWhy does it matter? Itâs not like she means anything to you.â Samantha has to actually laugh. In no universe can she see someone as strong and powerful as Roman caring about a girl like that. But, itâs when he doesnât say anything, doesnât voice some type of agreement that her confidence dwindles a bit. âRâright?â Still, nothing. And itâs with that nothing she realizes with all of the anger and shock in the world why heâs so upset.
âOh my god. Are you serious right now? Her? You really have feelings for her?â Even saying it aloud sounds ludicrous. âWhat the fuck, Roman? What the hell is so great about her?â
There is absolutely nothing that girl brings to the table for her to have someone like Roman Reigns interested in her. It doesnât make any goddamn sense. What the hell is attractive about a scarred, sliced up, fat bitch?
He finally speaks, warning her in an almost menacing tone. âWatch your fucking mouth.â
âThat girl is weak, Roman. You canât be the head of the Bloodline and have someone like her at your side. She doesnât deserve it.â By now, Samantha has moved over to him, her hands planted on his chest, his eyes closed. âYou needâŚ.someone strong at your side. Look at what youâve done just by yourself. ImagineâŚimagine having a queen to rule with you.â She licks her lips, going in for the kill. âI can be that for you. I can give you an heir. Look at how long itâs been and still nothing, no baby. Sheâs broken, Roman. That bitchââ
Samantha is silenced by him jumping up from his chair as he shoves her against the wall, hand on her neck. Itâs not the first time theyâve been in a similar position. She loves to be choked during sex, and heâs adept at doing just enough to get her off without her passing out.Â
But this time, thereâs no pressure, no sexual aspect, no foreplay.
ThisâŚ.this is different.
Because this is the first time sheâs ever actually been afraid of him.
âIf you ever in your fucking life speak on her again, Iâll kill you.â Samanthaâs eyes are wide, hand grasping at his. Heâs still not actually applying any sort of pressure, probably more so placement to evoke a level of fear. A reminder that he could end her life in a matter of seconds if thatâs what he wanted. âIf you ever speak to her again, Iâll kill you. Fucking look at her, and youâre a dead bitch.â
Samantha barely has time to process his threats when he says something in Samoan and steps back, releasing her as she dubs over and gasps loudly from the shock of it all.Â
Seconds later, sheâs on the floor, laying on her side after fucking Nia has landed her big ass foot in Samanthaâs head.Â
Nia is looking down with a wicked smile that promises a level of pain. âYou talk too fucking much.â She canât tell if itâs directed to herself or Roman, regardless, he looks unbothered, outside of staring down at her with disgust.
Samantha has no idea where the hell that bitch came from, but her unexpected blow nearly has her seeing stars. Sheâs writhing on the floor, on her side, cradling her head when Nia yanks her up by her extensions.
âOh, you have no idea how long Iâve been waiting for this.â Nia kicks her a second time, in her side, and Samantha is almost certain she heard the subsequent cracking of her rib from the impact. Tears fill her eyes. âIâve wanted to kick your ass since we were kids.â
Helpless and feeling so confused as to how he could do this to her, Samantha sets her teary gaze onto him. She does her best to generate as many tears as she can. âRoman, pleaseââ
âYouâre fucking delusional if you really thought I would ever make you anything more than what you were to me.â Samantha sniffles, vision blurred and stomach aching from both the physical and emotional impact of his words. âNothing.â
A sudden anger fills her, meshing with the growing physical pain. She did this. That fucking bitch has taken Roman from her, her Roman.
âYou wanna know what she is to me?â He crouches down and reaches for a lock of her hair, answering just as icily as the disgusted look in his light brown eyes. âEverything youâre not.â
Samantha snarls almost, not even angry at his words as much as her mind is trying to navigate any and all ways to make that little troll pay for this. Pay for stealing her man.
But itâs as Roman is walking out, that he barks his last order to Nia. Not necessarily a necessity given the fact that heâs certain sheâs dreamed exactly of how this very moment could and should go down. Granted, this is the one symbolic thing he needs to ensure takes place.Â
âBreak her fucking jaw.â
________
Handling the Samantha situation is just one of many things to be checked off of Romanâs to-do list for today. Heâs got meetings, contracts to review, spreadsheets to update, shipments to see sent off, and a million and one other things. Most of which heâs far from thrilled about but also know needs to be done, regardless if heâd rather say fuck it all just for today. For just a couple hours, even.
Delegate, perhaps. But these are things that canât be delegated. He, as the Head of the Table, needs to put his signature on to make it official. Â
And heâs got his Wise Man fresh on his heel to remind him of such responsibilities.
âAnd if my Tribal Chief can find it in him, we should also review Nick Aldis' proposal.â Romanâs instantly scowling. He fucking hates Aldis. The bastard is smug and thinks himself more important than he is. That Roman wonât end his fucking life with one snap of his finger.Â
Roman is halfway listening to Paul when he walks past Alicia who stands up from her desk. âSirââ
His dismissal is swift and brusque. âLeave me alone.â
âButââ
One murderous look, and Alicia is back in her seat. Roman briefly overhears Paul chastising his secretary for her insubordination when he opens his door and immediately realizes why Alicia was most likely trying to speak to him.
Roman sees Solo standing almost awkwardly in the corner out of his peripheral vision, but his attention is solely on the other unexpected guest.
Focused on the way her almost flesh toned dress hugs every curve that drives him fucking insane sometimes, the way she bites down on her bottom lip in that way heâs learned she does when sheâs unsure of something. And heâs especially focused on her hair thatâs chopped down to where it lightly grazes her shoulder.
âI tell you, good help is so hard to findââ Paul is silenced as he finally walks in and sees Solana. âOh, itâs you.â Roman shoots him a look that would absolutely kill if it had any sort of physical impact. âI mean, Solana, what a surpriseââ
Roman easily moves back to focusing on his wife who looks absolutely fucking stunning. He directs his command though to Solo and Paul. âYou two, out.â
Solo doesnât need to be told twice, but Paul seems to meander, even as Roman walks over to Solana. And itâs when Roman has his hands on Solanaâs hips and the room is still not cleared, he repeats in a calm voice thatâs solely because of Solanaâs presence.
If not for her, heâd be screaming at his Wise Man.
âI said get out.â
Roman can practically hear the nervous gulp. âBut, sir, we have workââ
Solana frowning pisses Roman off in a way he has to keep from showing. But itâs when she finally speaks and itâs an offer to leave that he really has to reel in his rage. âI can goââ
âNo.â Thatâs the fucking last thing he wants. âPaul is leaving.â
Itâs not a suggestion, not a request, not a preferred action.
Itâs a fucking demand.
And his Wise Man must realize this, because heâs quickly following in line with Solo and finally leaving Roman alone with Solana who seems still unsure about her presence.
âYou have work to doââ
âYou really expect me to get anything done when you come in my office looking like this?â He motions to her outfit and sees the way her cheeks tinge reddish as she bites back a smile. âNot happening, sweetheart.â
âI thought it looked nice.â The bashful way she says as such, as if sheâs unsure it was an accurate assessment blows his mind. She looks down at the dress as if itâs not the woman wearing said dress that has him pushing back unholy thoughts.
âIt doesnât look nice. You look nice, Solana.â Another one over of her curvy body, and he mutters, âmore than nice.â He brings his hand to her hair, brushing his fingers against the ends. âYou cut your hair.â
She nods, an almost look of determination in her soft expression. âIt was time,â is all she says, and Roman doesnât need to ask for clarification. This meant something to her. Cutting her hair has a deeper meaning than just wanting something new, and whatever the reason, heâs proud she found it in her to follow through.Â
He hates when she asks him, still unsure, âdoes itâŚdoes it look bad?â
Heâs not sure he could ever use Solana and âbadâ in the same sentence. Ever. âYou could never look bad.âÂ
She smiles, clearly pleased by his compliment. Good. He likes seeing her smile.
âCome here.â Roman takes her hand and leads her over to his desk where he sits down in his chair and doesnât think twice about guiding her onto his lap. Roman feels her tense for only a couple seconds before she relaxes against him.
âAs pleasant a surprise it is to find your fine ass in my office, I know you came for a reason.â
Roman is extremely perceptive. Always has been. Heâs noticed the increased comfort Solana has developed and continued to develop with him. The way her discomfort at being looked at too long or even touched in any sort of capacity has shifted into bashful smiles and an almost light in her eyes at being complimented. At someone finding her to be anything but every lie sheâs ever been fed.
Her confidence is growing, slowly but surely. And he likes that shit.
So heâll do whatever he needs to do to keep it growing.Â
âItâs nothing serious.â It doesnât have to be. She could come to his office every day if thatâs what she wanted. Heâd have zero complaints. âI justâŚI was baking Sopaipillas, and I know you like them and I felt bad because Iâm bringing Jimmy and Jey someââ
Itâs not until that moment he sees the Tupperware container on his desk. Her thoughtfulness is so unfamiliar but very much appreciated. He chuckles as his fingers carefully tap against her hip. âThank you, but you know if you keep feeding they asses, they gonâ keep coming over.â
Sheâs smiling almost, defending them to a certain extent. âTheyâre really not that bad.â And sheâs not entirely wrong. His cousins can be entertaining at times, but beyond that, he likes seeing her comfort level with them increasing as well.Â
For her to be as comfortable around them as sheâs become, especially with them being men, is extremely significant given her trauma.
Heâs proud of her for that just as well.
Still,Roman shrugs and calmly points out. âI spend most of my day with them.â Her other hand lays on his chest as he admits, âI donât want to come home and see them. I just want to see you.â
Solana gives an expected almost shocked expression followed up with a slight confession of her own. Her voice is soft, like sheâs unsure about what sheâs about to say but is going with it regardless. âThatâs why I wait up for you to get homeâŚbecause I want to see you too.â
He believes this to be true, but he also knows thereâs something else to it. âYou worry about me.â
She nods, nervously licking her lips. âIâm trying to work on it though.â Sheâs been working on a lot of things, a lot of difficult, most likely mentally taxing things. And as proud of her as he is, Roman also recognizes the importance of pacing oneself.
He gently grazes the back of his fingers over her cheek. âJust focus on you, alright?â
The corner of her lips lift into an almost playful grin as she asks innocently, âwhat if I can do both?â Roman studies her, sees and hears the playfulness. Itâs unlike her, but he fucking loves it. She squeals and almost giggles against him as he brings her closer to his chest, her hand squeezing his shoulder as he remains mindful of the placement of his hand on her hip.
Growing comfort or not, he still wants to be respectful of her boundaries.
Still wants to maintain her trust.
âI got me. Always.â Her gaze is on him, softening by the second as he adds on almost quietly. âJust need you to be okay too.â
Okay is such a big word, so layered. Sheâs not sure sheâll ever be fully okay. Too much trauma. Never enough healing. But there may be some level of okayness she can achieve, and it does feel like thatâs something thatâs in progress. âIâm getting there.â
And a large part of her healing journey is largely due to the man underneath her, staring at her with almost a sense of fascination, like heâs so enraptured by her. Like heâs smitten with her. The person she once believed no one could ever want has a handsome, powerful man like Roman Reigns holding her, looking at her, wanting her.
A line from the book resurfaces to the front of her mind.
One step, not twenty.
With that as a motivating and supportive mantra, she slowly moves her hand from his shoulder to his face, his beard prickling against her skin.
âSolanaâŚ..â Sheâs not sure sheâs ever heard him sound so pained. âBaby, you canât touch me like this and expect me to not want to kiss you.â
The butterflies in her stomach grow exponentially. Baby. Sheâs not entirely certain, but she feels like heâs called her this before, that heâs referred to her as such on a different occasion. So, itâs not a mistake, not a one time thing. Itâs yet another sign that there wasnât a dishonest bone in his body when he said he wanted her.
That he wants her.
Her heart is beating a mile a minute as she pools together all of the courage in her body and again chips away another tiny section of her wall of protection. âSo kiss me.â
Itâs not until this moment that Solana sees Roman actually appear genuinely surprised at something. He asks, maybe as if he needs to make sure he heard correctly, but Solana would bet itâs less that and more him ensuring consent. âAre you sure?â
Heâs been so good at that. Consent. And itâs meant the world to her. His patience with all of her baggage.
Nodding, she quickly remembers his preference for verbal acknowledgements. âYes.â
Solana doesnât really remember her kiss with Roman at their wedding. She doesnât really remember much from the actual wedding at all, to be honest. It wasâŚ.it was more traumatic than anything, which is why she does her best to keep it stored away with the other too difficult to sit on memories.
But thisâŚ.this she is certain she will never forget.
Thereâs an almost hesitancy when his lips touch hers, a space heâs leaving open in the event that she changes her mind. Sheâs grateful for that, but itâs not necessary. Her âyesâ was as genuine as his apparent interest in her.Â
And when he picks this up, picks up the fact that she truly wants this, he deepens the kiss, his hand moving up to her lower back as he pulls her closer to him. Romanâs full lips are soft and warm, and the way he moves his mouth against hers is both reserved and hungry, a strange but well balanced thing only he can manage. Like only he can achieve. He kisses her with a passion that she feels is only a fraction of everything he feels toward and for her.Â
Solanaâs hand slides to the back of his neck, her fingers brushing up and across the skin, teasing the strings of hair that refused to mold down. Sheâs not sure if this was the right move because he makes a sound against her mouth, an almost mixture of a moan and groan, and pulls away. The separation and her subsequent light panting makes her suddenly aware that theyâd been kissing longer than she realized. That sheâd gotten so plunged in the experience that time seemed a nonfactor.
Her eyes flutter close when Roman brings his lips back onto her, this time peppering kisses along her jawline. Her head tilts back, an unconscious thing that grants him full access to the nape of her neck, which he easily makes his way down to. Itâs a different, pleasant sensation that has her nails scraping against him.
âRomanâŚ.â
âSo fuckinâ beautifulâŚ.â He says something else, something she canât understand because itâs said in Samoan, but it unintentionally triggers something for her. A new level of bravery, an ability to ask something that makes her insides light afire and heart rate exceed whatâs probably safe and healthy. But, itâs a hill she wants to eventually be able to get up and over.
And heâs made her feel safe enough to be the one to do it with.
âRoman.â Her voice must give away her need to say something because he pulls away from her and is focused directly on her. She licks her slightly swollen lips. âI wantâŚ.I want to tryââ
âWhatchu mean he busy? Man, you trippin. Uce always got time for family.â Jimmyâs loud unexpected voice is enough of a disruption and mood killer that Solana quickly jumps off Romanâs lap and moves away just enough to adjust her hair and dress. âSoso!â
Solana brings herself to look at her husbandâs cousin as he finally walks in the office after dismissing Aliciaâs warning. The first thing she notices is the tupperware bowl in his hand and white substance on his fingers. âI hope you donât mind. When I saw your driver, I figured you had these little sugar things in the back so I just grabbed emâ all.â
If not for the fact that Solana is still trying to settle herself, sheâd point out how the other bowl was supposed to be for Jey. But that seems irrelevant at the moment.Â
âIâm going to fucking kill you.â
Jimmy seems completely unbothered by Romanâs threat as he plops down on the sofa, kicking his feet up on the glass coffee table and asks with all the obliviousness in the world. âSo what yaâll doing?â
When Roman shoots up from his desk and starts toward his cousin, Solana places herself in front of him, hands on his chest. His attention is immediately down, focused once again on her.
âItâs okay. IâIâve got training with Bay and Naomi anyway.â Swallowing her nerves and pushing back thoughts of howâŚ.how nice it felt kissing him, she quietly offers a hopefully acceptable alternative. âWe can talk tonight.â
This doesnât seem like Romanâs preference but something he can live with. âFine.â
She knows heâs obviously annoyed at being interrupted, and she is too, to a certain extent. But, Jimmy meant no harm, and she hopes Roman can at least recognize as much. Solana says bye to Jimmy and is near the door where she sees Solo waiting for her when an idea, more an urge, becomes too prominent to push away.
She turns back around and leans up, pulling Roman down by his shoulders and kisses his cheek. He gives her a look that tells her heâd be pulling her back for more if not for her cousin, and it makes her stomach somersault all over again.
But, she doesnât give him the opportunity, just a small smile as she walks out for good this time.Â
And itâs after sheâs gone, the Wise Man back in the room to help minimize the chances of his Tribal Chief killing one of his cousins that Jimmy uses the distraction to pull out his phone and send a text in the group chat.Â
Group Chat: Operation RoSo
Jimmy: Yaâll! Code red! Code fucking red!
Jey:?????????
Bayley: Is Solana okay?!
Naomi: ^^^^^^
Jimmy: Man, I just got to Uce office, and good thing I walked in when I did. They acting all weird and shit. Soso just ran out of here but not after telling him theyâll âtalkâ tonight!!!!
Jey: Iâm too high for this shit right now.
Naomi: Babe, how exactly is that a code red???
Jimmy: They was obviously arguing before I got here! And âtalkingâ tonight??? That ainât nothing but part two!
Bayley: Jimmy, that seems like a bit of a stretch.
Jey: A big ass stretch. Man, leave them two alone.
Jimmy: Naw. We gotta expedite this plan. I can see the writing on the wall. If we donât move fast, they never gon fall in love. They might even be starting to hate each other now!
Bayley: Now youâre just being dramatic.
Jey: Agreed. How I get out this chat?
Jimmy: I donât wanna hear it! Iâm the master strategist so let me do my thing!Â
Jimmy: Babe. You and Bayley have SoSo all done up and nice this evening. Make her think yaâll are going out or something.
Naomi: Why?
Jimmy: Damnit woman, because I said so!
Naomi: đŤ¤
Naomi: Iâm trying to figure out who the fuck you think you talking to. Donât get your ass beat.
Jey: Iâm muting this shit. Yaâll not gon get me killed. Roman donât like people in his business.
Jimmy: Just have her ready, and Iâll text you the location and the time she needs to be there.
Jimmy: We gotta save RoSo from themselves!
________
Solana misses the blow from Naomi by only a fraction of a second, but before she has time to think about it, another one is coming, forcing Solana to quickly jump to the side.
âNice,â Naomi compliments. âTry more offensive positions though. Try to hit me.â
Solana knew that was coming, knew that Naomi would be pushing her today, as she has the last couple times. It only makes sense. Solana recognizes that sheâs improving, that she has improved a lot since she started. It seems only natural that Naomi would continue to push her to further the progression of her skills.
âDonât be afraid, Solana! Naomi can take it,â Bayley encourages from the sidelines, drinking some of her Gatorade.
Solana does her best to not get too distracted, knowing that can be quite literally fatal if this was a real situation.Â
Naomi lunges at her again, and Solana manages to block it with her forearm but also lifts her foot, managing to kick Naomi away.
âNice!â Itâs such a weird thing to be applauded for. âBut remember to retract your foot faster next time. I could have twisted it and grounded you.â
Solana commits that to memory just as Naomi steps back and Bayley walks back over. She then compliments, âI know I said it already, but the haircut looks amazing on you.â She quickly adds in a manner thatâs more telling than asking. âJust have to even some areas off.â
Solana half smiles. She expected Bayley to need to go in with actual shears to shape up some areas given the fact that Solanaâs impromptu haircut was literally just her taking some regular scissors and chopping at least five inches off.Â
But before Solana can say anything else, she sees why Bayley ended her break to get back into the training.Â
Itâs evident by the knife in her outstretched hand.
âThis is a Benchmade Bailout. Itâs a folding knife. A little bigger than what weâd like you to carry on you, but a good place to start.â
CarryingâŚ.Solana hadnât even allowed herself to think about that part. Of course theyâd want her to start keeping a knife on her once teaching her how to use one.
Naomi then advises, âweâre not gonna do any fight training with it today, but we do want you to get used to the feel and weight of it.â
Solana can feel her heartbeat increasing. She canât remember the last time, if ever, sheâs held a knife of this nature. Her left hand is against her shorts, tapping against the spandex, a continued nervous habit.
Bayley sees this and offers assurance. âItâs okay. We just want to go over the basics.â
Solana does her best to focus not on the past, but the present. The here and now. Another recommendation from her book. She also strangely remembers the countless times Roman has asserted he wonât let anything happen to her.Â
âIâve got you.â
The safe feeling she has when heâs around. Heâs not physically present, but the recollection of his words anchor her.
Taking a deep breath, Solana takes the knife from Bayley, its coolness taking her by surprise. She never takes her eyes off the blade.Â
Meanwhile, Naomi goes into basic tips and information. âRight off the bat, if you ever need to use it to defend yourself, go for the major arteries.â She then begins pointing to the various body parts as she lists them off. âThe neck, stomach, chest area namely. Itâs your best bet at getting someone almost entirely immobilized.â
âAnd this might be graphic, but donât be afraid to go for it twice. Sometimes people can still be standing with just one hit.â Solana is grateful for the fact that Bayley is trying to be careful with her words, vague to a certain extent but clear enough so she can understand.
âIf you just wanna get them away and not potentially kill them, maybe go for the hand or foot, depending on how theyâve got you pinned.â
âBut by the time we finish your training, no one will get the chance to pin you.â Naomi gives a comforting smile and squeeze of her shoulder. âNot to mention Roman would never let you be in that position in the first place.â
Solana doesnât doubt that one bit.
Bayley suddenly clears her throat, almost awkwardly.Â
Solana frowns, looking lost by the otherwise random in interjection. âWhat?â
âWeâre not supposed to tell you, but Roman is taking you out to dinner tonight.â Naomiâs answer is appreciated, but it doesnât make sense.Â
âHe what?â Solana is confused because she literally just saw Roman this morning and came straight from his office to the Warehouse to train without him mentioning a word of this. âHe didnât say anything to me.â
âItâs supposed to be a surprise,â Bayley adds, but thereâs something almost unsure about her answer. âSo, Iâll take you to my salon afterwards to touch up your hair now, and then we can also figure out glam while youâre there.â
âYes.â Naomi claps and carefully removes the knife from Solana. The knife she completely forgot she was holding. Naomi comments on that. âSee? You forgot about it for a minute, didnât you?â Solana nods. âDonât worry. Weâll get you there.âÂ
The encouragement means the world to Solana as she offers a quiet but meaningful, âthank you.â Theyâll never know how much their support means to her.Â
Ever.
Bayley comes and stands beside Solana, sliding her arm around her with that infamous sly smile.âYou never have to thank us for being your friends, Solana.â Words have never hit so deeply, Solana having to hold back tears. Friends. âNow letâs figure out what the slay is gonna be for tonight.â
________
The minute Solana walks into the restaurant, she realizes that something is off.Â
And not even in a dangerous sort of way, more so, thereâs something sheâs not being told sort of way.
Itâs a beautiful upscale restaurant that has decor that probably costs more than some peopleâs mortgage payment.Â
But itâs barren. Not a customer in sight.Â
Walking up the three steps that lead to a higher level, she looks around, confused as to the fact that a restaurant that probably requires reservations six months in advance is vacant.Â
Digging in her small purse, she pulls out her phone to text Roman. Bayley and Naomi encouraged her to continue to play dumb, but this isnât right.Â
She needs to talk to him.
âSolana?â
Her head snaps up to see Roman who also just walked up the same steps she did minutes prior.
âRoman?â
He seems surprised to see her, an unexpected expression for someone who allegedly planned this dinner. âIâI donât know whatâs going on.â He walks over to her as she explains. âI was toldââ
âProbably the same thing I was told,â he finishes for her and takes in her appearance, Solanaâs hands smoothing over her dress. Looking just as captivated as heâd looked at her this morning in his office, Roman ghosts the back of his hand against her cheek. âSei uno splendoreâŚ.â
She hasnât a clue what heâs said, but something tells her itâs a compliment of some sort. Still, Solana asks with that same bashful smile that seems to always fall on her face when sheâs around him, âare you gonna tell me what you just said?â
Roman winks and answers, plain and simple, ânaw.â
Smiling even harder, before she can say anything else, another voice enters the conversation.
âSoso, girl, what you doing here?â
Both Solana and Roman turn to a smiling Jimmy who's wearing a poorly feigned look of surprise.Â
âJimmy?â Solana is genuinely confused while Roman looks like heâs genuinely considering murdering his cousin for the second time today. âWhatâwhat are you doing here?â
Roman is completely uninterested in the why and more so on the how heâs going to end the other man. âIâm going to fucking kill him, Solana. I donât care anymore.â
Jimmy completely ignores Roman and answers her question with an answer that makes no sense. âAhh, you know, I was in the neighborhood.â
He gives Solana a side hug as she answers his question as well, hoping to avoid witnessing a familial crime. âBayley and Naomi told meââ
âYou know what, it donât even matter. You here. Big Dog here.â He gestures around them. âLooks like this nice ass restaurant has been rented out by some coincidence. Might as well enjoy a nice dinner.â
Roman closes his eyes, seemingly trying to count off. âIâm literally going to snap your fucking neck if you donât get lost. Now.â
Solana moves over to Roman just enough for him to reach and gently tug her into him. He doesnât need to be getting this upset. She naturally lays her head against his chest, fingers grasping the sides of his shirt.
Jimmy lifts his hands in a surrender manner. âHey. I can tell when Iâm not wanted.â Solana smiles at the look she can imagine on Romanâs face at that. âYaâll be safe now. Soso, Iâll be at the crib in the morning for breakfast.â
âWhy the fucââÂ
Solana reaches up and redirects his focus onto her. âItâs okay.â Solana looks over at the table thatâs beautifully decorated with a stunning centerpiece. âItâsâŚ.itâs sweet.â Her diversion also, thankfully, a long enough distraction for Jimmy to depart, leaving the two of them alone.
Her preference.
Romanâs as well, clearly.
Solana then takes in the situation, a little relieved to finally know whatâs going on. Itâs obvious she was set up. Roman too. But regardless of the deception, itâs deeply appreciated. Her friends going to such lengths to set up something nice like this.Â
Roman, calming down a bit, doesnât necessarily disagree with her, but instead asserts, âtheyâre interfering, and I donât like that shit.âÂ
Her smile dims a bit as she offers, âwe can leaveââ
âNo.â He shoots it down immediately, hands on her hips. âJust hate that I finally get time alone with you, and itâs because of fucking Jimmy.â Her eyes shut when he kisses her forehead and murmurs, âbeen thinkingâ bout you all dayâŚâ
And the smile is back as she takes his hand and leads him toward the table, Roman pulling her chair out for her.Â
Having the restaurant entirely rented out is a luxury sheâs not used to but appreciates, especially with how catered the service is as well as the fact that they donât have to wait long for the food. Conversation flows easy between them, more Roman asking questions about how sheâs doing, if she needs anything.
Heâs always so attentive, and sheâs so grateful for that.Â
Grateful for him.
Itâs the same type of attentiveness that causes her to comment after the waiter comes and takes their plates, clearing the table. âYou seem stressed.â
And not just because of the date setup.
He shrugs, partially dismissing but not outright denying. âJust a long day.â
It seems to be a recurring theme with him. Solana has noticed for a while now how his early days always bleed into late evenings that sometimes spill over to the next day. It doesnât seem sustainable to her. âYou have a lot of those.â
âIâm the Tribal Chief.â He says it with pride, as he should, but thereâs something else there. Something she canât outright identify. âComes with the territory.â
And Solana recognizes as such, but as large of a man Roman isâin many different waysâheâs still just a man. âIs it ever too much?â She crosses her arms across the table, leaning forward almost. There may be no other attendees present, but there are still workers, so sheâs mindful of her volume. âI meanâŚ.â
âDo I ever get exhausted?â She nods. âSure.â That wasnât the answer she was expecting. Roman does such an excellent job always wearing that mask of calm, cool, and collected. Outside of his obvious temper, heâs always so well put together. Itâs something she envies, to a certain extent. âBut someoneâs gotta do it, and as itâs my birthright, the responsibility falls on me.â
She sits on his words, understanding where heâs coming from but also wondering just how he manages such a weight. She knows heâd headed the Bloodline for some time now, since he was 18 years old. Thatâs a large burden to carry at such a young age and for him to do it so long and as well as he has, itâs impressive.
He certainly lives up to his reputation.
Solana nods and does her best to ease into what sheâd really like to tell him, to have him know even if he never in life takes her up on it. âYou always say that I can talk to youâŚâ
Roman doesnât hesitate to reaffirm it too. âYou can.â
She knows this. HeâsâŚ.heâs made it abundantly clear that he wants to speak with her, to know whatâs on her mind. âThat goes both ways.â Something speedily flashes in his eyes, briefly affecting his otherwise neutral expression. âYou can talk to me too.â
For a second, she regrets saying anything, regrets second guessing his abilities to handle things. The last thing she wants is to insinuate heâs somehow incapable of taking care of business. But, if heâs insulted by her offer, he doesnât show it, just says a simple, âthank you.â She offers a small nod when he seemingly changes the subject. âHowâs training?â
Thereâs a bit of a sting at what feels like a slight form of rejection, but she understands better than anyone that opening up can be hard, so she respects his wishes.
âGood. IâŚ.I think I like it.â Itâs the truth. While initially terrified of being put into such a foreign situation, Solana has found herself growing increasingly content with this new part of her weekly routine. Training has assisted, to a great extent, in her growing confidence and surety with herself. Thereâs something comforting about learning how to defend herself, how to keep herself safe. âToday was a little hard though. Theyâre teaching me how to fight with knives. ItâsâŚ..uncomfortable, but thatâs how I know I need to do it.â
If thereâs anything sheâs learned in the past couple months, itâs that nothing about working to overcome trauma is easy. That doesnât, however, make it any less important.
Or beneficial.Â
âNot if you absolutely donât want to.â To be fair, Roman wasnât even informed that this was something the girls were starting with Solana. He makes a mental note to remind them that while they handle her training, the specifics of what sheâs taught needs to be run by him at all times. He probably would have shot down the knife training.
Solana was literally present and witnessed her mother be stabbed to death. Solana herself was also stabbed.Â
That seems almost cruel to make her learn how to wield the very weapon that took so much from her.
âWes used to use knives to hurt me.â It comes out more quiet than she intended, a natural effect of sharing something so painful. She points to a small scar on her neck, the exact date and nature of how it happened, something sheâll never forget but has little desire to elaborate on.
âAnd I knowâŚ.I know you wonât let him hurt me anymore, butâŚ.I donât want him to have that power over me anymore either. He knows Iâm scared of them, and heâs always taken advantage of that fact. I donâtâŚ.I donât want him to have that anymore.â
âThen he wonât,â Roman agrees. He can understand her logic, and he respects the hell out of her wanting to take back that power. He supports the hell out of it too. âNot if you donât let him.â
She gives a sad smile, shaking her head. âAs strange as it is, I thinkâŚ.Wes and I are both victims.â Before Roman can press her for clarification, she explains, âmy father always kept his contact limited with my mom. He said she would make him weak like she made me.â Just saying it takes Solana back to countless times and occasions where her father would talk down on her mother, talk down on Solana. Itâs a weighty memory. âHaving my momâŚhaving her love for the time that I did made a big difference for me. Wes never got that, so I always wonder how things could have been different if he did.â
Solana has a big heart. Pure. A mind-boggling phenomena to Roman considering everything sheâs been through. âIt still doesnât make what heâs done to you right.â Kind heart or not, itâs imperative she knows thereâs never a good enough reason or excuse for anyone to do what heâs done to her.
She nods, âI know.â Itâs still a work in progress, Solana learning to unlearn the victim blaming sheâs placed on herself for so many years. But, that much, sheâs come to accept.
She never deserved any of Wes or her father's abuse.
Roman can see the way memories might be coming back to the front of her mind and moves to redirect again. âYou wanted to talk to me about something earlier.â
Oh.
For a second, she wants to lie. To make up something. To come up with a story thatâs hopefully believable enough for him to not poke holes through. And then another line from her book resurfaces.
Calculated risks are differentâyou weigh your chances and step out onto the ice only when youâre relatively sure itâs solid.
Solana is certain sheâs never met a more solid person than Roman.
Scooting back in her chair, she feels his watchful gaze around her as she moves around the table and is only inches away from him when he realizes what she's doing and beats her to it, gently pulling her onto his lap. Heâs always so careful around her.
Solana moves her arms around his neck as he rests one hand on her hip.
She takes a deep breath. âI was...I was working out of my book this morning, and it was the chapter onâŚon intimacy andââ She has to pace herself, knowing that if she doesnât, she wonât get through the conversation. And she has to do this. She almost feels like she needs to do this. âI think I always thought I couldnât have that because of what happened to me, butâŚ..but I think I can.âÂ
And this has been such a powerful and moving revelation to walk into. For so long, Solana has lived in fear and trauma, haunted by the horrific memories of her sexual assault. Itâs inaccurately painted her views of what should and could be something beautiful and special with the right person. She never thought that could be possible for her though, believed that her chance had been destroyed by two sick individuals.
But if the past few months have taught her anything, itâs that there are decent people in the world. Decent men in the world. Jimmy. Jey. Solo.
Roman
Sheâs still very much nervous, and even talking about it has her pushing back a level of anxiety, but the desire to overcome that trauma, to be able to experience that as a woman, to not be held down by the shackles of her past, is stronger than itâs ever been before.
âAnd I want to try.â She licks her lips, nervously adding on and explaining as best she can, âbut, I canât do it right away. I needâŚ.I need to build up to it, and I knowâthat has to be frustrating for youââ
âSolana.â His interruption is quiet but firm. âWeâll go as slow as you want.â His finger is moving in slow circles on her hip, an action that provides her a strange sense of comfort. âWhatever you need is what weâll do.â
Solana releases a breath she didnât even realize she was holding in. Him agreeing isnât something she necessarily didnât see coming, she just didnât realize itâd come so easy.Â
She almost feels itâs too good to be true.
Suddenly unsure, Solana double checks. âYouâreâŚ.youâre okay with that?â
He doesnât miss a beat with his answer. âOnly if youâre sure this is what you want.â
Itâs a profound statement. Thereâs a lot of things sheâs not sure of that sheâs been making herself do, regardless.Â
But thisâŚâŚ
This is something she wants.
Something she maybe even needs.
Solana is careful with her answer. âIâm gonna be 29 this year, and the only sexual experience Iâve had is being raped as a child.â Thereâs an equal combination of emotion and conviction as she affirms, âI donât want that to be my story anymore.â
And it wonât.
Because she wonât let it.
Not anymore.Â
âThen weâll do this.â She nods, still nervous but also comforted by his support. âYou know I wonât make you do anything youâre not ready for, but I also need you to be good about communicating with me.â His eyes move up and down over her, resting slightly longer on her chest, which is understandable given the revealing nature of her dress. âAnd you also know how attracted I am to you, to all of you, so I need you to stay clear with me on what you are and arenât comfortable with, okay?â
Itâs fair and completely understandable. Roman is still a man. A man with needs, and he strikes her as being an otherwise handsy man, so him wanting and needing to know where her red zones are is important.
âI understand.â And sheâll make an active, concerted effort to be on top of that. To practice saying no and cutting things off when she needs to. âWhatâwhat about you?â He gives her a look. âIs thereâŚ.is there anything youâre not comfortable with?â
Again, he takes her in, head to toe. His tongue leaves his mouth to slowly gloss over his bottom lip. âBaby, you can do whatever you want with me.â
Her smile is bashful as she looks away. Him being soâŚ.outspoken about his attraction and desire for her is still a new thing sheâs trying to navigate, but itâs not unwanted. Nor does it feel bad to have a man like him want her so badly.
Not at all.Â
Deciding to continue to stay on the ledge sheâs already started to trail, Solana brings her hand to his chest. âSoâŚ.so if I asked you to kiss me againâŚ.â
He chuckles, Solanaâs eyes shutting as he brings his mouth to her jawline, âwhenever,â her nails claw against his chest as he moves his lips to her nose, âhowever,â finally heâs teasing the corner of her mouth. âWherever you want.âÂ
And itâs at the exact moment their lips connect again that a phone ringing once again steals away another groundbreaking moment.Â
Solana can feel the irritation in his muscular body and smiles against his lips.Â
âIâm gonna fucking kill him.â She doesnât necessarily doubt it as he kisses her cheek before pulling his phone out and answering as she lays her head in his neck. He barks out an unkind, âwhat?â
It doesnât deter her as he keeps his grip on her hip, Solana enjoying the feeling of being in his arms. Sheâs starting to realize being this close to him makes her feel safe. His presence alone gives her that feeling, but this is something different, something almostâŚdeeper.
She doesnât try to listen in on his phone call, but itâs made virtually impossible not to, given the fact that sheâs literally on his lap. However, thatâs ended when he switches to speaking in Samoan. Still, itâs not hard to pick up on the fact that heâs growing more annoyed with every second that passes.Â
He then gives a heavy sigh, switching to English, âIâll be there in a bit.â
Her stomach drops, a frown appearing that she does her best to quickly push away. She had a feeling the call would end that way.Â
Before he can explain to her the obvious, she lifts her head and assures, âitâs okay. I should probably get back to Dulce anyway.â
âDamn dog is so needy.â Solana smiles at the scowl on his handsome face. For someone who doesnât care for dogs, sheâs noticed he seems to interact with her puppy more and more as the days pass. He brings his hand to her chin, ensuring she keeps her gaze on him. âDonât wait up, alright?â
Itâs an expected request, one he should already know sheâll do her best to, but most likely wonât, abide by.Â
âI make no promises...âÂ
________
Having such a small dog means that he or she can be in the most random of places and blend in seamlessly because of said smallness. Itâs why in looking for Dulce after getting out the shower, Solana damn near searches every corner and crevice of the first and second floors of the mansion. Outside of a room thatâs been locked and closed off the past two weeks, Roman not really giving her a reason why nor has she pushed.
Sheâd never been in it anyway.
It is, however, out of the norm though for Dulce to not be nearby. She typically likes to stay close to Solana.
Or even Roman.
So for a moment, Solana starts to get concerned. But after searching her room, the kitchen, the dining room, and even the backyard a second time, Solana is finally able to locate Dulce in the least expected place.
Romanâs room.Â
She didnât even realize Dulceâs bed was still in there, still in the original spot on the side of his bed.
The side she had slept on that one night.
âDulce, you canât stay in here.â Solana knows Roman isnât a huge dog person, and Dulce being in his room is probably the last thing heâll want to see when he gets back. But itâs in reaching over to pick up her puppy that something unexpected happens.Â
Dulce nips at her.
Solana gasps, momentarily taken off guard. Thatâs the first time Dulce has done that. âDulce, no.â Again, Solana goes for the grab only for the puppy to plant her bottom and back legs into the bed. Now Solana is just straight up confused. âWhat is wrong with you?â
Thinking maybe she can lure the puppy with a toy, Solana turns to leave, almost to the door when Dulceâs whimpering and the patter of her little feet stops her. Solana turns around and moves to grab her when Dulce scampers right back over to her bed, plopping her little body down.
Itâs when she does that, Solana starts to catch on.
âYou want to stay in here?â Dulceâs reply is a bark followed by the wag of her tail. Solana frowns. âWe canâtâŚ..this is Romanâs room.â
And yet even as the words leave her mouth, she thinks about that. Thinks about the fact that a part of working up to being intimate with Roman includes being close to him, touching him, in his bed perhaps. And though she still doesnât remember everything from the night she got drunk, she remembers waking up in his bed and falling asleep again in the same bed with zero issues.
She feltâŚ.she felt comfortable.Â
She felt safe.
âWe can stay for a little while.â Deep down, Solana knows Roman wonât be upset with her. If anything, heâll be more annoyed that she didnât listen and decided to wait up, but her laying in his bed for a few minutes wonât generate anger.
Solana puts her phone on the nightstand, making sure the ringer is still on. The likelihood of him texting or even calling her is slim to none, but stillâŚ.she doesnât want to miss it if he does.
Laying on his bed is the initial plan, but thereâs a chill in his room that has her moving under the covers just to provide her that slight warmth. Itâs not intended to increase her comfort and definitely not intended to lead to her falling asleep.
But thatâs exactly what happens.Â
Itâs also the last thing Roman expects to find when he makes it back home a couple hours later.Â
Solana asleep in his bed.Â
He knew she would try to stay up, knew she would end up falling asleep in trying to stay up, but he didnât know she would end up doing all of that in his room, in his bed.
Itâs unexpected but far from unwanted, a strange sense of satisfaction at seeing her sleeping so comfortably, so peacefully in his space of all places.Â
Heâs careful in his movements around the room, gathering clothes to change into post shower. Roman doesnât want to disturb her, to wake her up, especially since he has a good guess that she didnât intend to end up in his bed and would be unnecessarily apologetic.Â
Apologetic for something heâs halfway considering asking her to make a permanent thing.
Roman manages to finish his shower without Solana so much as moving an inch. If only her damn dog was the same, because heâs barely able to open the bathroom door when Dulce is at his feet, whimpering.
Small ass dog with an even smaller ass bladder.Â
Before she can progress to barking, heâs got her up in his arms, guiding her out the room, down the stairs and into the backyard where she thankfully wastes zero time in doing her business. Roman is grateful, not wanting a second to pass where Solana could wake up, freak the fuck out, and leave.
He wants her to stay right where she is.
And itâs in sliding into the bed with her, moving his arm over her body and gently pulling her into him, he realizes another reason why he doesnât want her to leave. Thereâs an unfamiliar almost instant peace he has at the feel of her next to him, like this is how it should be, like she should be with him.
Like sheâs supposed to be with him.
But he clearly wasnât thinking straight when he moved her, because sheâs suddenly stirring in her sleep, eyes slowly blinking open.
Fuck. He didnât mean to wake her up.Â
Romanâs half expecting her to freak out, to panic at being this close to him, at being in bed this close to him. But she again surprises him with a quiet murmur thatâs more an acknowledgment than anything. âYouâre backâŚ.â He watches as she frowns almost, an indication of worry, asking in a voice full of sleep. âAre you okay?â
âIâm fine.â He brings his hand to her cheek, recognizing that even though sheâs talking, sheâs very much still half-sleep. âGo back to sleep.â
Solana gives a little nod and the moment he pulls his hand away, she inches closer to him. He shifts their positions, so heâs on his back, and sheâs tucked safely into his side. In what feels like seconds, sheâs fast asleep.Â
YeahâŚ.
A discussion about her moving into his room is definitely on the table, preferably sooner rather than later. It makes sense to him for a lot of reasons, namely the fact that sheâs clearly comfortable sleeping with him in this way but also the fact that sheâs expressed a desire to work up to being intimate.
Romanâs had sex in a lot of different places, but thereâs no way in fucking hell he could ever have his first time with Solana be anywhere but a bed.Â
His bed.
He plays around with a few different ideas on how to broach the subject before sleep prevails over him too.
Itâs the fastest heâs fallen asleep in years.
And heâs certain it has nothing to do with the long ass day he had but everything to do with the woman besides him.
But his sleep is short lived by the vibrating of his phone on the nightstand. Irritated at the interruption of his sleep, heâs not surprised. Romanâs always been a light sleeper.
He peers down to make sure Solana remains undisturbed in her slumber, and seeing that sheâs still sleeping as peacefully as before with her body somehow more over his than he remembered, he grabs his phone.
Paul: Sorry to disturb you so late, sir, but I got the files you requested for Miller. Emailed. As we already know, heâs almost a million in the hole. Has been in debt over the past twenty years. Never in the green. The bulk of it was accumulated in 2005. 500K. Summer 2005. Strangely, in that same month, it was cut in half to 250K. Then mysteriously zeroed out in late 07.
Roman sits on the brief summary provided by his Wise Man. It doesnât add up. He already knew Miller was in the hole. The man is a fucking idiot when it comes to finances, so him being that deeply in debt isnât surprising, but him somehow getting rid of a quarter million debt is. The fucker isnât smart enough to pull that off.
Roman: Who was the creditor?
Paul: Still looking into that.Â
Roman: Anything significant about 07â?
Paul: Not that I can see. Still digging though.
Roman doesnât like mysteries. Canât stand unanswered questions. Theyâve always driven him fucking insane. Itâs why he finds himself unable to fall back asleep, an inconvenient thing given the fact that heâll need to be up and out of bed in a little under three hours. Still, he canât get the dates and information out of his head.Â
How the fuck did a dumbass like Miller clear his ledger to that extent? Itâs not unheard of. Roman could have done it. Easily. But, heâs also significantly smarter than his wifeâs dumbass father.Â
Even more, what the hell did Miller need or have done for fucking half a million dollars?Â
Was he moving product? Weapons, maybe? Human trafficking? Just the thought of that last one makes Roman want to place his fist through the nearest wall.Â
But itâs Solana stirring on top of him that serves as the unintended trigger that helps him fill in the rest of the gaps.
Heâs quick with the text to the Wise Man.
Roman: When was Solanaâs mother killed?
Paul: Sir?
Roman: Answer the fucking question.
Thereâs a brief delay followed by those three dots and an answer.
Paul: 2005. August.Â
Wheels start turning as Roman begins putting the harrowing pieces together. Miller went into half a million dollar debt in August of 2005 that somehow got slashed in half at the end of the same month. The same month that Solana and her mother were attacked, and only one of them made it out alive.
HalfâŚ..
2007âŚ.
Roman does some mental math. Solana was born in 95. Sheâll be 29 this year. That puts her at age 12 back in 07â.
12.
The same age she was when she was raped.
The same year the largest chunk of her fatherâs debt suddenly zeroed out and disappeared like it never happened in the first place.
And just like the night he found out Solana was a survivor of childhood sexual assault, the unbridled horror and disgust that filled him in knowing the truth, Roman is starting to wish he wasnât so good at connecting the dots. That he wasnât able to put two and two together.
Because the picture is more fucking horrifying than anything heâs encountered in some time. If ever.
Because heâs now faced with the dilemma of just how in the hell heâs supposed to tell Solana that her father is responsible for her motherâs murder but also her being raped.
Because now heâs faced with the dilemma of if he should tell her at all.

In many ways, Roman is a simple man. The kind that believes obvious gestures, actions, or even lack of inaction should speak for itself. That there are some things that are just so clear as day, it doesnât make sense for him to have to explain himself.Â
For him to have to repeat himself.Â
Well, thatâs gone out the window as of recent months, because heâs constantly found himself having to do just that. And his day is starting off no different with a surprising and unwanted guest showing up at his office demanding to speak to him.
Bayley stands across his desk with her arms crossed and an almost glare on her face. âIâve been texting you.â
The fact that she even has his number is an issue in and of itself, but heâll tackle that another day. âIâm aware.â
The avoiding of said texts is that obvious thing that she seemingly doesnât understand the why behind.Â
Bayley nods, very visibly keeping in a comment sheâs at least smart enough to not make to the head of the Bloodline. Friend of his wife, or not. âWell, I would like to talk to you.â
Roman rolls his eyes, moving up from his desk to his filing cabinet to swap out expense reports he was trying to review before her rude, unwanted interruption. âI bet you would.â
âSeriously?â Ignoring her once again is the plan, Roman hoping thatâs all it takes so that he doesnât have to lose his temper before he even has his first meeting of the day. âItâs about Solana.â
And that is what finally catches Romanâs attention. Heâs quick to turn around, expression suddenly hardened. âTalk.â She has his full attention. âNow.âÂ
Bayley takes note of how easily it is to gather Romanâs attention with the simple mention of Solana. Itâs surprising to say the least and telling as hell to say the most, but she keeps this little observation to herself.Â
âWeâre having a Cinco De Mayo celebration at my familyâs restaurant tomorrow night.â
âWhat does that have to do with Solana?â
Roman watches her hesitate for a second. âI want to invite her.â
For a split second, Bayley thinks she may have hit a stroke of luck when Roman doesnât immediately shoot down her request. He seems to actually be thinking about it. And then he asks the question she knew would be the nail in the coffin. âWill Escobar be there?â
Sheâd like to just say no, as itâs highly unlikely he will attend, Bayley unsure if her cousin is even in the country. But, lying to the man before her has never turned out well for anyone, so she answers as honestly as she can. âI donât know. You know he pops up at random timesââ
Roman doesnât even need to hear the rest. âMy answer is no.â
She canât be too surprised. Bayley wisely anticipated getting Roman to budge would be damn near impossible, if not entirely impossible.
âRomanââ
âWhy the fuck would I allow her to be anywhere around that son of a bitch?â
To be fair, Romanâs relationship with Santos Escobar is tamer than most. Theyâre not allies, certainly not friends, and he doesnât hate the man. It irritates him a bit how Escobar is a stubborn bastard and refuses to pledge loyalty and allegiance to the Bloodline, but that anger is eased by the fact that Escobar gives an even bigger middle finger to the Nightmare Factory.
His loyalty is to himself and the Legado Del Fantasma. That makes him a wildcard and potentially dangerous.
Roman wonât have Solana anywhere where danger could be present.
âYou know as well as I do that while both you and my cousin have this weird ass QuĂŠ en es mĂĄs macho thing going on, thereâs all but a ceasefire. You've never attacked one of his men the same way heâs never attacked anyone in the Bloodline. Thatâs not going to change overnight just because your wife is present at a chorcha.â
Roman isnât too full of himself to admit when someone has made a valid point, but as this involves Solana, the standards are a bit different. He wonât give Bayley that much. âWhy should I even take the chance? You want to do something with Solana, take her somewhere else thatâs on Bloodline or neutral territory.â
âMy familyâs restaurant is on neutral territory.â Bayley is happy to have another point of his she can counter. âAnd contrary to what the average, ignorant American thinks, Cinco De Mayo is an important part of our culture and our heritage, Solanaâs heritage. I think she would really enjoy herself, that it wouldâŚ.that it would help her feel close to her mom.â
Roman is excellent in the way he remains absolutely unreadable even at Bayleyâs point that has him seriously reconsidering his prior answer.
He has no doubt that would help her feel connected with her mom, being around reminders and in a space thatâs so representative of half of who she is, who her mother was. He canât see her not enjoying herself, which is something that doesnât seem to happen a lot in her life thus far.
Just as he continues to mull over the options, Bayley adds on another defense. âI get where youâre coming from with the safety angle, but Iâll be there and Naomi will be there. Between the two of us, no one will touch her.â
Roman easily reads between the lines and identifies her unspoken request. âYou donât want Solo there.â
On one hand, he can understand it. Bayley not wanting his Enforcer there. Soloâs presence could be seen as him potentially scoping versus the real reason of serving as Solanaâs personal guard.
Bayley doesnât seem to be backing down, reminding with all the confidence in the world of her capabilities. âLike I said, Naomi and I got this.â
Roman will give her that. Bayley and Naomi could fight on his team any day. Theyâre just as brutal as the men, if not more when pushed. He knows theyâd be able to keep Solana safe if need be. Itâs that realization as well as the concern of depriving her of something that could make her happy that brings him to a revised answer.
âFine, she can go.â Roman is quick to add on as an ominous warning, borderline threat, âbut if anything fucking happens to her while sheâs with youââ
âIt wonât,â Bayley vows. âSheâs our friend, and sheâs family to Naomi. We look out for each other.â
Roman believes that. Believes that Bayley has seemingly pledged a loyalty to Solana that matches that of Naomi, and while heâd never fucking tell her this, heâs grateful she has someone like Bayley to talk to.
At his fill of socialization with people he doesnât like, Roman is quick with the dismissal. âIf you donât have anything else to discuss with me about Solana, you can get the hell out of my office.â
Bayley is actually surprised she made it this long without being kicked out, so itâs under her breath she mutters, âa true gentleman.â Sheâs halfway to his door when manners get the best of her. âHey, Roman.â
Heâs back at his desk, gaze as irritated as when she first stepped in. âWhat?â
With a nod of respect and appreciation, she simply says, âthank you.â Whatever his response, or lack thereof, is after that is unknown because Bayley is out the door and on her way to invite Solana to what is sure to be a night of fun.
________
âMan, I tell you every dish Solana makes seems to get better and better.â Jimmy is rubbing his stomach as he places the now cleaned plate on the coffee table. âWhere she been at all our lives?â
Once upon a time, Roman had a nice, quiet house that was his and his alone. Now though, itâs shared with a wife who really isnât an issue, two obnoxious cousins who need to start paying rent at this point, and a dog whoâs currently at the sliding door leading to the backyard having a one-sided bark off with a squirrel.
âWhy are yaâll always fucking over here?â Romanâs question is said with all the irritation manifesting in his muscular body. At the same time, he stands up from the sofa to retrieve the puppy he doesnât feel like yelling at to shut up.Â
She might piss herself in fear or something.
âCome on,â he grunts, leaning over and taking up Dulce who is almost instantly quiet. âMaking all that damn noise for nothing.â
Roman places Dulce in her bed in the living room and returns to his previous seat on the sofa when she hops up and walks her ass right over to lean up on the sofa to stare at him with her unspoken request.
Jimmy is the first to notice this. âI think lil Nacho Libre likes you, Uce.â
Jey chimes in between bites of whatever Solanaâs latest dish is that sheâs made for them. âShe know English yet or Soso still got her only speaking Spanish?â
âMan, the dog canât speak.â
âYou know what I mean, motherfucker. Damn.â
Roman ignores the two imbeciles currently freeloading in his house and relents to just letting Dulce on the sofa. Heâs not sure why sheâs downstairs with them instead off on the second level where the girls are getting ready, but sheâs already here now, so no sense in transporting her.Â
Dulce seems satisfied with her placement right next to him.Â
âI still canât believe we werenât invited.â
âI can get why they didnât invite us, but they could have at least given Nicki an invite.â
Jimmy is quick with the obvious answer. âYou know Nicki donât fuck with Naomi like that, or Bayley, and definitely not Soso.â
âCause sheâs fucking psychotic.â Roman has zero issues with his cousinâs wife having little to no interest in getting to know Solana. Itâs for the better. As he said, the bitch is psychotic.
âOnce again, Big Dog, you ainât gon keep disrespecting my wife like that.â
Roman is as unfazed by Jeyâs threat as Dulce is.Â
âI gotta agree with Uce on that one. Nicki ass crazy as hell. One minute she love you, the next minute she pulling a Left Eye and burning your shit.â That emits a chuckle from him. His cousin's sneaker collection being burned in the backyard that one year was pretty funny.Â
âLook, that was during a rough patch. Thatâs all.â
âDamn bruh, yaâll must got a whole goddamn quilt then, cause your relationship been nothing but rough patches since we was in high school.â
âSo what, you and Naomi never have no issues, huh?â Jey lives up to his hotheaded reputation, jumping into defensive mode. âYaâll just got the perfect marriage, right?â
âOf course we got issues, man, but never to the point where she turned into a lil arsonist!â
Completely disinterested in hearing dumb and dumber argue, Roman grabs his phone and shoots out a text.
Roman: You almost ready?
Solanaâs reply comes in less than five minutes later.
Solana: Just aboutâŚ..is Dulce by you?
Roman: Yeah. SleepingâŚ.as always.
Solana: LolâŚ.sorry about that, I meant to grab her before we got started.
Roman: Itâs fine.
Roman: I need to talk to you before you leave.
Heâs not surprised by the longer time it takes for her to reply. He can imagine sheâs reading too much into his text.
Solana: Okay....I can come now?
Solana: I just have to put my shoes onâŚ.
Roman: Iâll come to you.
Roman knows better than to ask the bumbling idiots to watch Dulce. Their attention span when they get this heated is almost non-existent, so he opts to just take her upstairs with him, figuring he can deposit her in her bed in Solanaâs room and thatâll be it for the night.Â
One down.
Two more to get rid of.
Roman is standing outside of Solanaâs door ready to knock when itâs ripped open, and heâs met with an instantly smiling Naomi.Â
Sheâs smiling at the damn dog, of course.
âThere you are, Dulce.â Roman has no issue whatsoever with letting her take the puppy, talking to it in that weird ass baby voice everyone seems to use around Dulce. He doesnât get it, but itâs not something he desires to try to get anyway. Naomi calls out over her shoulder, âIâm gonna take her out to pee.â
Bayley shouts from inside the room, âIâll come with you.â
Roman also has zero issues with that as well. He wants to be alone with Solana before she heads out.
Naomi is heading to the steps when Bayley walks past him, throwing out a rushed, âtell her she looks nice.â
Thatâs a given, but he gives her a nod, easily stepping in and closing the door behind him. He looks around the room, eyes settling on the connected bathroom where the door is suddenly swung open.
âGuys, are you sure I should wearââ Solana stops when she sees that Bayley and Naomi are no longer present, just him. âOh, sorry, I thoughtânever mind.â
Roman would call her out on her apologies, both in the text and just now, but his attention is on something entirely different.Â
Solana is fucking stunning.
Her dress is orange, thin sleeved and hugs her in a way that makes his jaw clench and dick stiffen. Itâs more low cut in the front than he knows sheâs probably comfortable with, but if anything, it accentuates just how fucking nice her chest is. Thereâs a slight split on the side of said dress that shows off her thighs, thick and soft to the touch, heâd imagine. She also has her hair down, something he hasnât seen in some time, makeup that covers the scar, and lips painted in a teasing red.Â
Roman has to catch himself because for a brief second, heâs tempted to completely change his mind. She looks too good to leave the house, especially without him present because thereâs not a single doubt in his mind that sheâll turn heads.
She always does.Â
Finally, heâs able to get words to leave his mouth that arenât as filthy as the thoughts heâs trying to keep locked in the back of his mind. âJesus, you look amazing.â
Roman has noticed an increasingly difficult time in restraining himself around Solana, not in the sense where heâd completely ignore her trauma and try to touch her in a way that would trigger her. Never that. More so in the way he fantasizes about her in that way, dreams of having her in that way, solely because of his growing physical attraction.
Granted, itâs always been there.Â
Anyone could see her beauty even in how she would dress down and try to hide her figure, but now that Naomi and Bayley have been encouraging her to be less conservative in her appearance, itâs increased that difficulty exponentially.Â
âThank you.â The makeup on Solanaâs cheeks helps to mask her growing blush at Romanâs unabashed compliment. She suddenly looks down, nervously running her hand down the dress. âIs itâŚ.is it too much?âÂ
Not at all. He might not want anyone else looking at her, but Roman could see her dress like this everyday and never grow tired. Still, his approval isnât needed nor should she ever look for it. âDo you think it is?â
âI always think itâs too much.â Itâs an honest answer, one thatâs followed up with a caveat heâs surprised but pleased to hear. âButâŚ.but, I do like it.â
âThen thatâs all that matters.â
Solanaâs smile does something to him. She looks even more beautiful when sheâs smiling. âLookâŚ.â Roman steps closer to her, trying to ignore her perfume, sweet and soft, a dangerous combination that matches her perfectly. âYou need anything tonight, you call or text me, alright?âÂ
She nods and asks. âWhat about Solo? Isnâtâisnât that his job?â
Itâs not a conscious in as much it is a unconscious thing when he steps even closer to her, moving his hand to the small of her back. Roman gently tugs her toward him, and to his surprise, she doesnât tense under his touch. âYouâre my wife, Solana. My job is always to protect you. He just guards you when I canât.â
She looks like sheâs trying to memorize this piece of information, storing it for future use as necessary knowledge. âDoâdo you want to come with us?â Solanaâs hand resting on his chest is as surprising as her question. âI could talk to Bayley.â
Roman has never been a social person. To say he hates most people isnât necessarily an exaggeration. So, the thought of being around a bunch of people he doesnât know or like outside of Solana and maybe Bayleyâsheâs not entirely awfulâis not appealing as well. That doesnât stop him, however, from considering the question at hand.
Heâs tempted to ask her if she wants him to come, because Roman can find it in himself to withstand socialization for a couple hours.Â
Heâll do it for her.Â
But, thereâs another part of him, a larger part of him that thinks she needs to do this on her own. That she needs to establish a life and something for herself that doesnât include him. Itâll be good for her.
âNo.â Is his final answer, delivered much gentler than if she was literally anyone else. Roman reaches and plays with a piece of her hair. âNot my scene. Too many people.â Not to mention that his presence would draw too much attention, potentially not good attention. He wonât do that to her. Wonâtâ risk ruining her night. âGo. Have a good time.â Again, for good measure, he reminds, âbut I mean it. Something is wrong. You call me.â
She nods, and he readies to remind her of his need for words when she answers, âokay.â She then adds on, âI already gave Dulce dinner, so she should mostly sleep, but if you could take her outside every so oftenâŚ.â
âI got it.â Heâd much rather sacrifice the couple minutes it takes to bring her outside than risk her shitting or pissing somewhere in his house. Granted, he has to give credit where credit is due. Sheâs doing great with her potty training. Solana takes great care of her, but thatâs not surprising. Itâs obvious how much she loves the puppy. âYou should be back by midnight, though.â
Itâs more a strong suggestion than a demand. Solana is a grown woman. Heâs not going to dictate what she does and doesnât do. Sheâs had enough of that in her life. He had to give his approval for her to go with Bayley because of safety issues, but this, he wants to leave up to her as long as she understands the later sheâs out, the riskier things can get.
After a certain time, only bad or not so great things can happen.
âOf course.â She seems to understand this clearly, but heâd also bet thatâs her preference to be back earlier than later. Solana grabs her purse and walks towards the door, having to pass him in the process. Roman catches her, arm around her waist.Â
She looks up, curious, and he makes note of how she again doesnât tense under his touch. Thatâs happening less and less, it seems.Â
He likes that.Â
âText me when you get there.â
She smiles, and Roman suddenly feels a layer of his irritation with his cousins melt away. âI will.â Solana gives him one more glance before walking out the room.Â
Roman scratches his beard, a part of him wondering if he made the right decision to let her go alone. Granted, he knows he would have never even initially agreed if he didnât trust Bayley and Naomiâs abilities.Â
Theyâd defend Solana as ruthlessly and violently as any of his best men.
That helps to chip away some of his second guessing along with the fact that this is something she clearly wants, and he wants to give her that. Give her anything he can that makes her happy.Â
She deserves that much. Â
Granted, that temporary peace is short-lived with the shout from one of his cousins who are apparently still present.Â
âAyo, Big Dog, did you change the WiFi password again!â
________
Roman needs a new house.
Maybe have Solana let him know what she likes as far as interior designing goes and have something built with an impenetrable wall around it.
That seems to be the only thing that will keep his annoying ass twin cousins from being at his place so much.
Roman just knew that when the ladies left, theyâd leave too. But no, thatâs too good to be true, because theyâve been gone almost an hour, and their asses are still here.
Even Dulce is sleeping peacefully like the unemployed bum that she is in her bed kept in the living room.Â
And as always with them, theyâve been talking damn near the whole hour. One would think Roman straight up ignoring them as he works on his laptop would be a clear sign they need to go the hell home, but that would be too much like right.
He either needs an Excedrin or for his cousins to leave, the latter being preferred most. Itâs especially needed when they seem to be watching whatever dumb ass Tok or Reel video over and over again.Â
âWait. I know that song,â Jey announces, face scrunched up as he tries to recall the name. All Roman knows is that itâs in Spanish and repetitive as hell on top of being played on repeat. Annoying as hell too. âThat lil freak from Miami I used to mess with used to have this shit playing at her crib all the time.â
Jimmy sucks his teeth, asking. âWhat happened to her?â
âMan, she moved.â Jey shrugs. âShe went to go be a freak in Cali.âÂ
Finally, Roman snaps. âWould yaâll use some damn headphones or something?â
Jimmy is the first to speak. âYou might want to watch this, Uce.â
âI donât care.â
Jey slaps Jimmy on the arm, knowing how to get his cousinâs attention. âYeah, why would he want to see a video of Solana?â
At that, Roman lifts his gaze.
Jimmy smirks knowingly. âNaomi sent some videos. Check your phone.â
That would explain it. Why Roman was out of the loop. It wasnât from Solana.Â
Heâd selected a specific text and ringtone notification for her, so he wouldnât be unnecessarily checking his phone. Hence why he hasnât checked it since she text that theyâd made it to the restaurant.
Opening up the thread that has himself, Naomi, and the twins, he sees the set of messages and videos.
Naomi: Having a blast! Solana especially. I kinda feel like the odd one out cause clearly I donât know none of these dances đŠ I kinda got the Bachata one, but Merengue and Punta are killing me.
Naomi: Bay and Solana keep trying to teach me, but itâs not going well lmao
Roman watches them all. Every video shows Solana smiling and laughing as she dances with Bayley and Naomi. One of the videos shows her and Bayley trying to instruct Naomi who seems to be failing miserably at learning what heâd guess are traditional Hispanic dances. Thereâs even a clip of her trying to help a little girl learn whatever dance theyâre doing, and she looks just as patient as heâs seen her with the kids she reads to at the library.
She looks fucking gorgeous and happy.
He likes that for her. After everything sheâs been through, she deserves all of the happiness.
But, itâs in watching the last video with the song that he kept hearing on loop from his cousinâs phone that he understands why they have it on repeat.
Itâs a different kind of dance Bayley and Solana do together along with other women he doesnât know or give two fucks about. What he gives a fuck about and focuses in entirely on is the way Solanaâs hips and ass move, rhythmically, teasingly, drawing out an uncomfortable tightening in his pants.
Fuck.Â
Roman does his best to push his erotic thoughts away, still trying to figure out how to balance his sexual desire for Solana with the knowledge of her sexual trauma. It almost feels wrong, to feel and want her in that way when he knows how traumatizing that subject is for her. It doesnât stop the desire though.
âDamn, I knew it had to move, just not like that.âÂ
âLike water.â
Itâs probably a combination of his pent up usual, general and sexual frustration, but the dangerously slow way Roman lifts his head and equally slow way he sets his murderous gaze on his cousins is all they need to see to know theyâve gone too far.
And they know it.
Jimmy is instantly on damage control. âI meantâBayleyâyou know, cause sheâsheâs also thick.â
Jey coughs awkwardly, hitting Jimmy on the arm. âI think, uh, we shouldâwe should head out.â And Roman is just as slowly rising from the sofa when the twins literally almost trip over their feet and make a mad dash for the door.Â
It takes a couple minutes for him to calm down, and he too suddenly finds himself watching said video, casually commenting to Dulce, âabout time they fucking left.â
Dulce barks in agreement.Â
________
Solana laughs along with Bayley and Naomi as they plop down in their seats after an almost four minute song of full out merengue. All are reaching for their respective drinks as Bayley playfully nudges Solana.Â
âArenât you glad you came?â
Just then, Juanita Escobar walks over, Bayleyâs mother who carries the same dimple and friendly disposition. She places her hand on Solanaâs back, reminding in Spanish, âyou must come back and see us again!â
Solana smiles, agreeing, âI will.â She then looks over at Bayley. âIf thatâs okay?â
Bayley waves her off. âAre you kidding? With how soft and girly you are, you can come be my replacement any timeâÂ
Juanita glares at her youngest, muttering to Solana, âmaybe you can rub off on my Bay, hmm? Never wanted to do girl stuff. Always wanted to fight with the boys.â
Bayley chugs back some of her drink. âHell yeah.â
Solana thinks sheâd prefer the fighting too. Maybe then she could have defended herself better. Defended her mom even.
Juanita shakes her head, looking at Solana. âYes, come again, child. You look so much like someone, but I canât put my hand on it. Iâm sure my husband would know. He knows everyone.â
That doesn't necessarily make Solana want to come back, meeting someone, a man specifically. However, if heâs anything like Bayley or Juanita, maybeâŚmaybe it wonât be so bad.
And maybeâŚmaybe she could ask Roman to come with her. Thatâd make her feel moderately to significantly better. Safer, even.
Juanita is soon pulled away from the table by a customer at the same moment Solanaâs phone rings.
Roman: You good?
Solana: Yes.Â
She bites down on her lip, contemplating if she should hit send on her message. It feels like a risky thing to say, but itâs also how she feels.
And heâs always telling her to be honest with him.
So she is.Â
Solana: Kinda wish you would have came.
Her fingers nervously tap against the table as she wait for his reply that ends up coming almost immediately.Â
Roman: Thatâs your world. Not mine.
Roman: Do you not feel safe?
Solana: No, not that. I guessâŚ...Nvm.
Roman: Tell me.
Again, more hesitation, and sheâs not entirely sure where this desire to be honest and almost vulnerable with him comes from, but she does her best not to push it away, almost welcoming the slight discomfort that comes with sending such a risky text.
Solana: Idk, I feel better when youâre around.Â
He doesnât reply after that.
Bayley and Naomi share a knowing expression, having watched Solana quietly for the past few minutes. Naomi ends up being the one to lead the conversation. âSo how are things going with Roman?â
The question takes her off guard, Solana trying her best to think just how to handle said question.
Roman no longer confuses her. Not nearly as much as her feelings about him confuse her.Â
She wasnât lying. She does feel better when sheâs around him. And itâs not even that she feels unsafe currently. Itâs just that he makes her feel safe in general. Thatâs such a foreign concept. One she hasnât experienced in such a long time.Â
If ever.
Because the truth of the matter is that while Solana felt an indescribable amount of happiness with her mother, there was never really safety. Not with her fatherâs wrath always waiting around the corner.
So while this is new and unfamiliar, itâs also nice, and she finds herself enjoying his presence. She likes being around him beyond the safety aspect. The way he talks to and with her, like he genuinely enjoys their conversations. When he meets her for work and asks how her day was or finds her in the house to see how her day was, it makes her feel like he actually cares about what she has to say.
Like he actually cares about her.
Itâs such a stark contrast of how she sees him interact with others. Always on edge, it seems.Â
Heâs never made her feel that way though. Maybe at the beginning, but thatâs starting to feel less like anything heâs done and more like her own trauma.
TraumaâŚ.
Thatâs also been an interesting experience. For the past few weeks, sheâs worked out of The Courage to Heal, reading every page as instructed. And itâs beenâŚ.an emotional time, to say the least. Definitely tears. A lot of them. Mostly shed in the middle of the night when she canât sleep or on the bathroom floor as she sits against the tub, reading and writing, Dulce right beside her, offering that unspoken emotional support.
Itâs been therapeutic and challenging and awful having to confront her demons but also freeing in a strange sort of way. Especially the poems. The words of other victims who express so eloquently and hauntingly beautifully what she still cannot.Â
One of the things sheâs really latched onto and tries to remind herself of is that there are different kinds of touch. Because of the assault, her brain has naturally associated any kind of touch as dangerous, which isnât always true. Especially in the past few months.Â
So, thereâs been a conscious and active effort to remind herself when Naomi and Bayley hug her or playfully bump her, that itâs safe. That sheâs safe.
EspeciallyâŚ.especially with Roman.
Especially with how touch between them has seemed to also increase over the past couple weeks. Or maybe less increase in levels and more in frequency. Sheâll find his hand on the small of her back, or him taking her hand in his, and sometimes, if theyâre close enough, Solana also finds herself reaching for him, for his hand, her hand on his chest.
Itâs all so innocent in presentation but something much deeper for her. A level of comfort sheâs developed with him that she never had in any prior relationship.Â
She likes it.
She likes him.
âSolana.âÂ
Jumping at being pulled from her inner dialogue, Solana remembers the initial question being posed.Â
She clears her throat, finally answering, âummâŚ.good. Itâsâitâs good.â
âHeâs not being an ass to you, is he?â She asks, almost protectively. âI mean outside of the natural ass that he always is.â
Immediately, Solana is shaking her head, almost feeling a duty to defend him. âNo. No. Heâhe would never. HeâsâŚ.always nice to me.â
Bayley nearly spits out her drink. âNice?â She coughs a bit, also shaking her head. âAre we still talking about Roman here? Roman Reigns? That man has never been nice a day in his life.â
Naomi shrugs. âI mean, she has a point. I donât think Iâve seen him be cruel to her.â
CruelâŚ.Solana also could never find it in her to use that word to describe Romanâs disposition towards her. Maybe others, but never her.
Bayley sits on Naomiâs point, suddenly sharing to the table, âyou know what, now that you mention it, when I went to go ask him if I could invite you tonight, he was ready to bite my head off for bothering him. But, the minute I said it had something to do with you, he was all ears. Like an instant switch.â
Solana is also all ears, slightly intrigued. âReally?â Doubt and insecurity creeps in as she weakly suggests, âhe was probably like that with Samantha too.â
At that, Bayley and Naomi laugh aloud, Naomi nearly in tears.
âNow that is funny. Solana, Roman donât give a fuck about that girl. Not outside of sex.â
Solana must look unconvinced, so Bayley points out, âthink about it. Sheâs been around for years, and itâs not her he took down the aisle, soâŚ..â She then adds, âarranged marriage or not.â
The girls bringing up their points takes Solana back to her run-in with Samantha in the bathroom and Niaâs jaw-dropping information.Â
An idea appears, and Solana is instantly torn on whether to pursue or pop it. Something tells her itâs a bad idea, that she should take his information to the grave, but thereâs also that side that feels like she can trust Bayley and Naomi to keep it between the three of them.
Sitting forward, Solana decides to take a risk. âCan Iâcan I tell you guys something?â Nervously, she stipulates, âbut it has to stay between us.â
They look expectedly worried. âSolana, if it has something to do with your safetyââ
âNo, no that.â Solana almost feels confident enough to say that sheâd go to Roman if that was the case. She trusts that she could talk to him if it was something like that.
âOf course, then.â
âSolana, you can tell us anything.â
And for some reason, she knows this to be true. Itâs why she battles against her trepidation to open up. âItâsâummm. IâŚ.I found out that whenâŚ.when Roman wasâŚ..having sex with Samantha, heâŚ.â Thereâs a pause caused by the discomfort of such a discussion, but Solana manages to push through. âHe said my name.â
Both Bayley and Naomi wear shocked expressions, the former of the two whispering harshly, âholy shit, what?â
Bayley then asks, âwait, how do you know?â
âNia told me.â Solana has zero desire to wholly revisit that night in the bathroom with Samantha, so she only provides the important part. âShe said that Samantha told her friend, I guess. T something?â
âTiffy.â Bayley rolls her eyes. âMakes sense. That girl canât hold water.â
âI donât get it then. He obviously was imagining it was you and not Samantha, so why go fuck her and not you?â
Naomiâs question makes all the sense, but Solana doesnât really know how to tackle it. This conversation is already difficult enough for her.Â
But her face must give it away, Bayley seemingly putting two and two together.
âYou two havenât slept togetherâŚ..have you?â Solana simply shakes her head, unable to verbally confirm and slightly mortified that itâs reached this level of detail.Â
Solana is certain they must have a million thoughts floating around their head, starting with the how and why. That partâŚ..that part she doesnât know if she is ready to discuss.
An ironic thing considering sheâs just started the chapter in her workbook on sharing her story with trusted people.Â
The irony.
But instead of invasive questions that heighten her anxiety, Naomi places a comforting hand on her arm.Â
âLook, Iâve known Roman my whole life, and the guy has been a dick the entire time. He would never hurt a woman, I know that, but heâs also never given a fuck about any of them either. So for him to be the way he is with you when you two havenât even had sexâŚâŚthereâs something there, Solana.â
âI agree,â Bayley cosigns, saying what Solana has struggled to admit even to herself. âI think he really does like you. In his own Roman sort of way.â
Solana canât deny the fact that itâs getting increasingly difficult to push away that possibility, even if she still canât understand the why.
Just what has she done to deserve him liking her?Â
Maybe itâs not like. Maybe he just tolerates her better than he does others for some reason. Whatever it is, she canât negate the fact that it must mean something if Naomi, whoâs known him her whole life, believes that something is there.
âIâm gonna go to the bathroom.â Solana just needs to get away. Just for a couple minutes. This conversation took a turn she wasnât expecting, and she needs to settle her emotions.Â
Bayley seems cautious. âWant me to come with you?â
âNo.â The rejection is paired with a kind smile. âIâll just be a few minutes.â
And before she can get any pushback, Solana makes her way through the dancing crowd and to the back restroom that sheâs grateful to see is vacant. Closing and locking the bathroom door, she goes straight for the mirror.
Despite the unexpected amount of dancing and slight sweat, she still looks relatively the same.Â
The sameâŚ.
Same.
Even with the makeup and tight little dress, sheâs still the same person. Sheâll go home tonight, take off the makeup and remove the dress to find the same damaged, scarred girl who can never have something like what Jimmy and Naomi have.
Even if Roman does like her, it wonât last.Â
She canât please him.Â
She could never make Roman happy, could never truly satisfy him, satisfy his needs.
Sheâs too broken for that.
It brings tears to her eyes.
Unable to withstand the sight of herself, Solana grabs a couple napkins to blow away her tears, tosses them out and heads out the bathroom. Instead of heading back to the table, Solana makes a beeline for the bar.Â
Sheâs only had white wine, but white wine isnât enough. She recognizes where her emotions are taking her, and itâs nowhere good.Â
Solana refuses to ruin this night for Bayley and Naomi.
The bartender is a young girl, pretty, early to mid twenties. She asks in a friendly, deeply accented voice, âwhat can I get you?âÂ
Solana is naive to this, to the great array of alcoholic options that litter the counter before her, so she answers the best way she can. Thinking back to the few events sheâd be forced to attend with her father and brother, the drinks she always heard people order before getting drunk.
âVodka and Gin, pâplease.â
________
Meanwhile, Bayley and Naomi sit at the table still partially stuck on this unexpected news. But also not entirely surprising. With how sittish Solana can be at times, they have a good, albeit depressing guess as to why sex hasnât happened between them.
It does bring up a valid question though.
âWasnât the whole marriage for the purposes of giving Roman an heir? How is thatââ
âYour guess is as good as mine,â Naomi murmurs. âBut, I think we both know itâs obvious Solana has some trauma. Touch is clearly hard for her.â
âI know.â Bayley frowns. âI guess Iâm just surprised Roman of all people has been soâŚ.patient with her.â
âYou and me too.â Naomi blows out a breath before again reiterating what she said to Solana. âHe must really like her.â
âItâs just hard to tell with him. Heâs so damn stoic, butâŚ.I think youâre right. I think she likes him too. Sheâs justâŚ..scared.â Fear is also something Solana deeply struggles with, though Bayley and Naomi both can recognize the progress sheâs making towards overcoming those fears.
With a gasp, Naomi grabs her phone, directing Bayley. âGet your phone.âÂ
Bay is confused but follows suit just as Naomi says, âI know who may know.âÂ
Less than a minute later, Bayleyâs phone dings with a text notification from a new group sheâs in that includes herself, Naomi, Jimmy, and Jey.
Naomi: Sooooo, Bay and I were just talking, and between the four of us, how do you think Roman feels about Solana?
Bayley: And please be honest.
Bayley quickly ensures. âWeâre not going to tell them what Solana said, right?â
âHell no. We could never betray her trust like that.â Bayley is relieved but also not surprised.Â
Naomi values loyalty just as much as she does.Â
Jey: Man, I think he really like oleâ girl. Bruh got her a dog, seems to drop whatever he doing when she needs something, and I donât think I ever heard him say nothing bad about her.
Jimmy: He was definitely annoyed at first when Soso had her lil breakdown at the Warehouse, but that didnât last long at all.Â
Bayley: Plus Roman is always annoyed with something or someone.
Naomi: Except her đ
Jey: Why yaâll ask?
Naomi: We think Solana really likes him too but is scared to push on it because of her past and just donât want to encourage her to give it a chance if heâs just gonna hurt her. Yaâll know how Roman is.
Bayley: A certified ASSHOLE. And a hoe.Â
Bayley: But, it seems like thatâs not the case with her.
Jimmy: I would say he definitely likes her too.Â
Jey: I mean they are married soâŚ.
Naomi: It was arranged. That doesnât count.Â
Bayley: Do we know if heâs still fucking around? Primarily with Samantha since sheâs been his go-to the past couple years?
Jimmy: I donât think so. Matter of fact, I guess she said some smart shit to Soso in the bathroom on NoC and Big Dog wasnât having it.
Jey: Heâs apparently planning to pay her a lil visitâŚ.with Nia.
Naomi: Oh my god, is he finally gonna let Nia kill her?
Jimmy: Naw, just fuck her up real good, I think.
Naomi: Damn.
Bayley: Thatâs wild for him to cut her off like that after all this time. Def sounds like he likes Solana to me tooâŚ..
Jey: Yaâll really think he about to admit that shit though?
Naomi: No more than she is. Heâs stubborn, and sheâs so insecure.
Jimmy: Yaâll thinking what Iâm thinking? đ
*Jimmy changed the group chat name to Operation RoSo*
Naomi: Bae, what is this damn title?
Jimmy: Itâs our latest covert operation. We gotta get Roman and Soso to admit they like each other!
Jey: And just how the hell is we supposed to do that? Like Bay said, Uce is an ass sometimes.
Bayley: All the time unless youâre SolanaâŚ.
Naomi: I mean, not to be vain, but if you look like Roman, you can kinda get away with being an ass. To some extent.
Bayley: Youâre not wrong. He is gorgeous. đŽâđ¨
Jimmy: He alright, I guess. His ears kinda big.
Naomi: Bae, I love you, but letâs not lie. Your cousin is an asshole, yes, but heâs also fine as hell.
Bayley: Thatâs not the only thing said to be bigâŚ..
Naomi: GirlâŚ.
Bayley: They canât all be lying.
Jey: ANYWAYS!
Jey: What if theyâre coming together at they own pace and we should just leave shit alone?Â
Jimmy: đ
Jimmy: Thatâs about the dumbest fucking thing I done heard all day. What next you gon say, huh? That they just magically gon fall in love on their own too? No! They clearly need our help!
Naomi: Maybe less help and more a shove in the right direction?
Bayley: A gentle push!
Naomi: Yes!
Jey: All I know is if shit backfires, Iâm not taking the heat for none of yaâll asses. Yaâll gon have to deal with Big Dog.
Jimmy: Then weâll just put Solana in front of us. He canât hurt us then!
Jimmy: SeeâŚ..Iâm smart with this shit. Thatâs why Imma be the brains of this operation.
________
âWhat do you mean sheâs drunk?â
Romanâs night suddenly went from uneventful and quiet, his preference, to unexpected and infuriating, all with a walk from upstairs to downstairs where he finds Solana awkwardly standing in the living room. Bayley and Naomi wait at the bottom of the steps with nervous expressions.
Good.
They should be scared shitless, because one glance at Solana, the gloss over her eyes, and he can tell sheâs all but wasted.Â
âYou were supposed to be watching her.â Roman is fucking irritated. He knew it was a bad idea to leave these two in charge of Solana.
Bayley, however, seems unbothered by his anger. âSheâs not a child, Roman. Were we supposed to stop her from drinking too? We had no idea she asked for something stronger.â
Itâs an excuse, and Roman doesnât do excuses. âWhat happened?â
Naomi answers this time around. âWe donât know.â
âYou donât know?â One. Theyâre lying, and Roman hates liars. Two. Theyâre lying, and Roman has literally killed people for less. Three. Theyâre lying, and he wants to know why. âYouâve both got less than a minute to give me the truthââ
âLook, we talked about some things, and we promised to keep it between the three of us, so Iâm not telling you what exactly it was, but I can tell you sheâs not in danger.â Bayley is smart. She must know that heâd literally torture the information out of her if it had anything to do with Solanaâs safety.Â
âIt was justâŚsome stuff about her past. I think it may have been too much, and she decided to get drunk to not think about it.â Naomiâs suggestion makes sense and pans out, but Roman canât stop thinking about just what she shared with them.Â
Was it the rape? But why? He remembers her terror in the locker room that day, the fear and pain in her eyes and voice as she pleaded with him to not make her talk about it. It doesnât make sense why she would suddenly share it.
Even with how close she seems to them.
âJust leave.â
Roman will deal with them later. Right now, his priority is getting Solana settled.
They seem to know better than to push his patience, asking that he at least keep them updated on how sheâs doing in the morning.
He neither agrees or disagrees. Itâll heavily depend on how fucked up Solana is.Â
Once theyâre gone, Roman walks into the living room to find her laid on the sofa, eyes glazed over from her drunkenness but that same beautiful smile on her just as beautiful face.
âSolana.â Sheâs so gone that it makes him wonder even more again just how upset she must have been. âI need to get you to bed.â
He needs sleep too, feeling the length and weight of the day starting to take a toll.
Sheâs protesting almost right away. âIâm not tâtired.â
âMaybe not, but you will be tomorrow.â Roman knows sheâs in for one hell of a hangover.
âI donâtâI donât want to sleep.â Sheâs almost pouting, brows caved together as she stumbles through more words. Solana suddenly stands up, and he naturally moves closer to her, noticing the almost sway she does onto the floor. âI justâhave bad dreams andâand youâre justâjust gonna leave once I sleep anywâway.â
âWhat do you mean by that?â He asks. Getting answers from a drunk person usually isnât the best or smartest thing in the world, but something tells Roman that Solana is the type of drunk person who ends up spilling secrets. And heâs certain thereâs a lot sheâs probably still keeping in.
She then issues an unexpected accusation. âYouâyouâreâyouâre gonna go be with Samanthaâthatâs who you want.â
Roman finds her question slightly ironic considering heâs been letting Samantha think she got away with whatever disrespectful shit she said to Solana on the Night of Champions. Heâs letting her think sheâs safe and waiting for the right moment to set her ass straight, Nia tagging along to deliver the physical message he canât.
âAfâafter all.â Solana continues, surprising him with her openness thatâs most definitely fueled by her inebriation. âWhyâwhy would you want me?â She points to herself, voice taking on a softer, vulnerable tone. âWhyâwhy would anyone want me?â
Heâs silent for a good minute, sitting on such a heavy question. âIs that really what you think?â Itâs asked in a low voice, and heâs not entirely sure if itâs more him thinking aloud or if he genuinely wants to know if that is how she really views herself.Â
She shakes her head, nodding in a way that further signifies how drunk she is. âItâs like you said, Iâm mentally uâunstable.â
For a second, Romanâs confused, but he quickly thinks back to their wedding night, to his hurtful words to her. Words heâd give anything to take back now.Â
With an almost frown, he acknowledges his fault. âI was wrong to say that to you, Solana. You are not that.â Truthfully, with all sheâs been through, even if she was, he couldnât fault her.
With a family like hers, she never had a fucking chance.
Solana seems almost confused by his apology, taking him back with the next thing that leaves her mouth. âIs itâis it true youâyou said my name when you were with Sâsamantha?â
He definitely wasnât expecting that, has no idea how she even knows that. Is that what Samantha told her in the bathroom? Why would she? It does nothing to make her look good. Regardless, drunk or not, Roman sticks with his word that he wonât lie to her.
âYes.â
Even drunk, he can tell how shocked she is by his admission. Shaking her head, she says either to herself or himâhe canât really tell. âIâI donât get it.â Before he can say anything else, she starts on this train of self-hatred. âSheâs pretty andâandâskinny andâsheâs notâbroken like me.â
That does something to him, Roman moving closer to bring one hand to the small of her back and the other to her face. âYouâre not broken, Solana.â
âYesâyes, I am. You donâtâyou donât know whatâwhat happened to me.â Her bottom lip trembles as she shakes her head, hands on his chest. âI canâtâI canât do whatâwhat she doesâcanâtâgive you tâthat.â
He shifts his hand to the back of her head, forcing her blurry gaze to stay on him. âBabyâŚ.â It tears him the fuck up hearing her acknowledge the lingering trauma heâs certain sheâll always carry to some extent, but even more to hear how lowly she really thinks of herself. âI donâtââ
âI canâtâI canât becauseââ Her voice cracks, her eyes focused everywhere but him as she almost comes to this heartbreaking realization that her drunkenness briefly helped her escape these thoughts that have now returned. ââbâbecause they râraped me, and now I donâtâI donât know howâhow to be with anyone.â She gasps and sniffles, shaking her head. âI shouldâshould have fâfought h-harderââ
âDonât you ever fucking say that, you hear me?â Romanâs voice somehow contains all the conviction yet gentleness he can muster. Hearing her even think that makes him feel something he canât fully describe. Itâs heavy as fuck though. âYou were a child, Solana. It wasnât your fault.â
âYou were a kid.â He has to say it again, because thatâs the hardest part in all of this, knowing how young she was. âYou should have been protected, and you werenât, and Iâm going to make sure every son of a bitch involved in what happened to you pays for that shit. I promise you that. The same way that I promise with my life, Iâll never let anyone ever hurt you again.â
Sheâs clearly taken back by his words, by his vow. âI donâtâI donâtâunderstand wâwhy? Whyâwhy would you do that?â
Roman isnât sure he has an answer for that specifically, but he does have something else he can provide her, a small part of him knowing, hoping maybe, thereâs very little from tonight she remembers come tomorrow morning.Â
âBecause someone needs to protect you.â Roman swallows, adding before he even realizes what heâs saying. âBecause I donât want Samantha.â He brushes his thumb over her cheek, intentionally wiping her tears. âI want you.â
And suddenly, itâs so much easier to say it aloud, to voice to her what he still doesnât entirely understand, why he feels drawn to her in ways he doesnât understand. Thereâs a connection almost, a connection of mutual loss thatâs formed some sort of bridge Roman is unsure just when he started crossingÂ
She looks more stunned at his admission than anything else heâs ever said to her. Still, she seems to try to discredit him. âButâbut sheââ
âSheâs not you.â His voice unintentionally softens. âNo oneâs like you.â
Selfishly, he hopes she doesnât remember much or any of this conversation, less painful for her, more time for him to figure out what it is about this woman that he feels so deeply drawn to.
Again, she tries to downplay her worth. âI canâtâI canâtâgive you what you need.â
And somehow he knows exactly what she means. What sheâs referring to.
âI donât need that from you.â Truth be told, he doesnât want to need anything from her. Needing anything in general has never been his thing. He just knows that, for some reason, he wants her around.
He likes having her around him.Â
Sheâs blinking again and places her hand against her head, sharing, âmy hâhead hurts.â Itâs not an intentional deflection, heâs certain, but itâs appreciated.
This is a much deeper conversation than he anticipated having tonight.
âYou need to get to bed. The sooner you can start sleeping this off, the better.â He eyes her skeptically, asking, âcan you walk?â
He should have already known the answer, because the minute she tries to pull away from him to walk, she sways almost immediately, Roman going right back to holding her. âCome here.â He expects her to tense up as he moves to lift her up bridal style, but she doesnât. She just continues to look confused, clearly overwhelmed with all of her emotions.Â
Roman doesnât say anything as he carries her up the stairs and doesnât think twice about taking her to his room instead of hers.Â
He needs to monitor her tonight, and thatâs easier done with her in his room.
She looks around still confused but doesnât say anything as Roman lowers her down on the edge of his bed. Naturally, heâs on one knee before her.
âIâm gonna take these off.â He refers to her heels which could largely be a contributing factor for her to inability to walk. She nods, and he quickly unstraps and tosses the heels to the side. âDo you want to change?â
She nods and then adds, âI donât haveâmy clothesâŚ.â
Roman is at his dresser, pulling out a shirt that he reaches to her. âYou can wear this for tonight.â
She accepts it from him, turning to walk to the bathroom, Roman relieved to see the removal of her heels helps her to at least make it without falling.
While sheâs changing, he heads back downstairs to get Dulce.
He knows sheâs used to sleeping with Solana and will probably throw a fit or spend the night crying if that doesnât happen, so a small sacrifice is made as he also brings up Dulceâs bed from the living room and places it on the side of his bed.
One night of her sleeping in his room wonât kill him.
Itâs then that Solana walks out the bathroom, changed out of her dress and her face free from the makeup.Â
âI washed my faceâŚ.hope that was oâokay.â
âItâs fine, Solana.â Roman is half expecting to have to instruct her to lay down, but she again stays with the theme of surprises tonight and walks over to the bed, pulling back the covers and climbing in.Â
Heâs again ready to explain that heâll be in the guest room across the hall but will be available if she needs anything. Heâll still be checking in on her occasionally, regardless.
But, before he can explain as such, she asks in the softest, most vulnerable voice, âwill you lay with me?â
Itâs an extremely unexpected question with an easy answer.
Romanâs answer is to move into the bed with her, half expecting her to freak out in one way or another. This close proximity is so unlike her, a complete contrast to what sheâs usually comfortable with.
However, what he doesnât expect is the way Solana moves her body close against his, pressing herself into his side, arm over his stomach and head on his chest.
In a switching of roles, Roman is the one to initially tense. This is more physical contact than theyâve ever had, and thereâs not a doubt in his mind that if not for the alcohol in her system, sheâd have a fucking meltdown touching him this much.
But in her drunken, highly intoxicated state, thatâs not an issue. She wants to be close to him, wants to be pressed up against him.Â
Sheâs looking for comfort.
And truthfully, he wants it too. Roman likes the feel of her next to him, actually uses his other arm to tug her closer, noticing how she adjusts her head on his chest.
Her hand is planted against his chest, and he starts to tell her to rest, to encourage her to sleep this off. But, she once again beats him to it, asking yet another question.Â
âWhyâwhy are you doing this?â
To be fair, Roman only answers her truthfully because heâs betting on her being so close to the edge of sleep that the chances of her remembering this rare shred of vulnerability are slim to none.
âBecauseâbecause I know what itâs like to not have anyone.â Thereâs a sense of hesitation and discomfort as he verbalizes what heâs never once openly discussed with anyone. âBecause I didnât just lose my mom when I was ten. I lost my entire family. My parents. My aunt. My uncle. And all of my siblings. IâI was the only one who made it out alive that night, and I spent years not knowing why, why I was left alone.â
Roman doesnât want sympathy, doesnât want people feeling fucking sorry for him. He never has. But the way Solana lifts her head to look at him is a look of something else, something that likens understanding and compassion.
The latter of which is almost an unfamiliar concept.Â
âI didnâtâIâm sorry.â She lays her head back against his chest, moving even closer. She then murmurs into him, almost reassuringly, âyou donâtâyou donât have to be alone anymore.â
Roman doesn't know what to say to that, so he doesnât.
He says nothing.
________
Waking up in Romanâs bed wearing only his shirt is the last thing Solana expects along with the fact that the minute her eyes open, sheâs hit with instant throbbing of her head.
She winces, confused about so many things as she forces herself to sit up, mind immediately wandering to a single question.
Where is Roman?
Her question is easily answered when she spots the notebook on his nightstand. She reaches for it, squinted eyes reading over his words.
Solana,
Iâm sorry I had to leave. I have a meeting with the Elders I, unfortunately, canât miss. Iâll be back right after.
If not for that, I would have stayed with you.
You most likely wonât remember last night, but you got drunk. Very. Youâre gonna wake up with a nasty hangover. Take the Aspirin. Itâll help.Â
I gave Dulce her breakfast and took her outside. She should be fine.Â
I also let your job know youâre not coming in today.
Rest.
Roman
Thereâs so much to process in such a straightforward letter. What did he mean by stay with her? Didâdid they sleep in the same bed?Â
For some reason, thatâs not as anxiety inducing as she imagined it would be. She doesnât know the why or how, but it doesn't bring that heavy weight on her chest.
The drunk part triggers brief memories of the night prior. Bayley and Naomi. The celebration. Dancing. Fun. Happiness.
A switch.
At some point in the night, her mood shifted into something else. Solana remembers asking for a drink, but she doesnât remember much after that. Glimpses. An almost sympathetic look from Roman. His arms around her. Him holding her.
It makes for a confusing story she doesnât really have the wherewithal to deal with. She instead reaches over and swallows the Aspirin.Â
And she goes right back to sleep.
________
Roman finds himself completely bypassing his office, clearing his schedule, and moving his phoneâs status to Do Not Disturb.
Heâs not in the mood to deal with any of that shit today. At least not for a couple more hours. He needs to make sure Solana is situated first.Â
Thinking about her resurfaces his earlier level of anger at how the meeting with the Elders ended.
âWhat of the girl?â
This was the part of the hour meeting that caught his attention the most. Everything else was trivial and, in his opinion, a waste of time. But, itâs when Elder Aleki brings up Solana that Romanâs focus is recentered.
âWhat about her?â
Heâs not stupid. Far from it. Roman knows exactly where this is headed. It was partially expected. What he didnât expect was the anger thatâs already brewing at just how Solana was referred to as âthe girl.â
Aleki is bold with his questioning, jumping straight to the point. âIs she still not pregnant yet? Itâs been almost four months.â
Romanâs jaw clenches, and he finds himself squeezing the armrest of his chair as he does his best to keep his voice somewhat subdued. âIâm aware of how long itâs been.â
Another elder, Sione, decides to join in on this conversation that Roman is about to shut down in less than a minute. âPerhaps she should have another medical evaluation. By one of our doctorsââ
âThe hell she will.â
Rikishi shoots Roman a warning look, quietly, muttering an equally pleading, âlanguage, Uce.â
Roman straight up ignores him. Rikishi still adheres to those outdated traditions that just because someone has more years on this earth than you that they automatically deserve respect. Fuck that. Roman gives respect when itâs earned, and Aleki and Sione have been on his shit list for years.
Heâll never forgive them for their behavior after the death of his family, their questioning of Romanâs birthright to the throne.
Aleki releases a heavy sigh, and Roman has to restrain himself from not bashing the old manâs head into the table. âAll weâre saying is if she is incapable of producing a child to continue the Bloodline, then we have no use for her and should seek to find you a betterââ
Thatâs when Roman has enough. To suggest Solana be examined again. which would no doubt be triggering as fuck for her, is one thing. But, itâs an entirely different thing for them to have the unmitigated gall to suggest he get rid of her.
Over his dead fucking body.
Roman shoots up from the chair. âMy wife isnât going anywhere nor is anyone at this fucking table going to make her do shit.â
Rikishi shoots more than just his subtle warning this time around. âRoman, pleaseââ
Romanâs not trying to hear that shit from him, though. Heâs not trying to hear shit from anyone.Â
âOur marriage is nobodyâs fucking business but our own. That includes when she gets pregnant. Weâll share it when we want to.â
Truthfully speaking, this isnât something Roman has thought much about, an intentional thing. The fact that the marriage was originally and solely arranged so that she could give him an heir is irrelevant to him right now, regardless of what they think.
Thatâs not a priority.Â
âYou may be the Elders, but I sit at the head of the table.â The Bloodline has always been successful and profitable, but itâs no doubt exceeded any and all records and expectations since Roman became the head. Thatâs an indisputable fact. âDonât fucking forget who made this table what it is today.â
The ending of the meeting is still playing in the back of his head like a bad song on repeat. If not for his semi level of respect and acknowledgement of their standing as Elders, he would have put a bullet in their heads the minute that disrespectful shit started leaving their mouths.
In no fucking universe is anyone taking Solana from him. He doesnât give a flying fuck whatever the original reason was for their marriage. Sheâs his now, and nothing is changing that.Â
Roman makes active efforts to calm himself before walking back into the house. After last night, the last thing she needs is to be unintentionally triggered.Â
He finds her on the sofa, writing in her journal, Dulce right beside her sleeping peacefully without a care in the fucking world. Roman halfway expected her to be out back on the patio, a seemingly favorite spot of hers.
But the sunlight would no doubt exacerbate the remnants of her hangover heâs certain sheâs still battling, so it makes sense sheâs indoors. Itâs when she looks up, noticing his presence that Roman also realizes sheâs still only wearing his shirt.Â
For some strange reason, he likes that. Likes seeing her in his clothes.
âHeyâŚâ
âHey.â Roman sits on the sofa opposite from her. He takes her in, watching her set her journal to the side and as he notices her hair is pulled up. âHow you feeling?â
She shrugs, making a face that suggests some level of discomfort. âMy head still kinda hurts, but I guessâthatâs to be expected.â He starts to ask her if sheâs drunk enough water, recognizing the importance of staying hydrated a night after heavy drinking, but sheâs suddenly pleading with him almost. âPlease donât be upset with Bayley and Naomi. Itâs not their fault.â
To be fair, he hadnât thought about them until now. âThey were supposed to watch you.â
âThey did. IâI got back fine.â She seems almost worried for them, for their safety. He would never actually kill either woman. Heâll just probably never trust them to take Solana out again in life. But no murder would actually happen. Still, itâs the part where Solana says she got back fine that irks him. He does his best to mask that irritation though.Â
âYou werenât fine last night, Solana.â She was far from it, more emotional than heâs seen her in some time, if ever.Â
Her shoulders drop, almost in shame. âI donâtâI donât remember much of it.â
Heâs thankful for that. For the both of them. âYou were upset.â Itâs not a lie nor is it specific. Itâs just the truth.Â
She then asks with almost hesitant curiosity. âWâwhat did I say?â
Roman shakes his head. âIt doesnât matter.â He doesnât like being dismissive towards her, doesnât like being dishonest, something he swore he wouldnât do. But, she was an emotional wreck last night, and the last thing he wants is for her to go through all of those emotions yet again.
He doesnât like seeing her upset.
But then she looks at him, studying him almost, a sad, almost tearful chuckle leaving her mouth. He watches as she brings her legs up to her chest and rests her chin against her knees. She asks, volume barely over a whisper, âI told you last night, didnât I?â Roman realizes itâs less a question and more a heavy realization. âThatâthat I was raped. Didnât I?â
Itâs a bit of a loseâlose situation. Either he tells her no and risks her feeling bad for sharing something she didnât have to or he confirms what she already knows and still feels not great.
Theyâre both shitty options, but he ultimately goes the route of honesty. âYes.â
âItâs weird. Iââ She looks away, eyes shutting for a minute before she unexpectedly explains, âIâve beenâIâve been working out of this book for people who wereâŚassaulted like me, and Iâmâat the part where its recommended I tell at least one person becauseâbecause itâs not healthy to keep it to myself.âÂ
Roman knows exactly what book sheâs talking about. It was the key that led to him figuring out just what happened to her. That still fucks with him. Still makes him fill with silent rage at her piece of shit family letting that happen to her.Â
âYouâre now the first person Iâve ever told.â Roman hates that even more.. Hates that someone like him is who she ended up breaking her silence with. He wishes it was either Bayley or Naomi. Theyâre much better at this sort of thing. The feelings thing. âI donâtâI donât like talking about it.â
âYou donât have to.â He isnât sure heâd be able to control his anger hearing details, hearing anything about it to be honest, not coming from her. His rage would be intractable.Â
She nods, almost appreciatively. âThat's why sex isâitâs hard for me.â He fully understands that, and a small part of him hates how he tried to initiate that with her on their wedding night. He figured her nerves were because of her naturally anxious personality. Never once did it cross his mind that it was because of something much darker. âAnd itâs notâitâs not like I donât think about it sometimes, about being close to someone like that, I do.â This piece does surprise him, but he works hard not to think too much about it right now. He wants to be in this moment with her. â IâI have. But, every time I try, I justâI get flashbacks, and I canât.â She ends on an almost whisper, Romanâs stomach tightening as she quickly wipes at a tear.Â
He doesnât like seeing her cry.Â
âYou donât owe me an explanation, Solana.â Not him or anyone else, for that matter.Â
She doesnât say anything for a good minute before asking, âwhat happens now?â
Thatâs a great fucking question, and he almost has the same towards a lot of things. Heâs curious though what sheâs specifically referring to. âWhat do you mean?â
Solana seems almost frightened as she asks, âare youâare you gonna send me back to my father?âÂ
Yeah, he could have never in a million years guessed that. âWhy would you ever think I would do that?â
And he suddenly hates asking, hates seeing the way the emotion builds back up. âIâm notânot a virgin, andââ Her eyes close, her grip around her legs tightening. âYouâŚ.you only married me becauseââ
âI donât care about that.â This is his second time today having to face some level of this discussion, but this round is significantly gentler. Roman does his best to illustrate the conviction in his voice while also being mindful of her emotions. âWhat do you want, Solana?â
He has no idea what sheâs going to say, but he does know for a fact he would never send her back to that hellhole. It would be like sending her to her own death.Â
She seems to really think about his question, think about something heâs certain sheâs never had a lot of.Â
Options.Â
Finally, after what feels like hours, she answers. âI want to stay here.â Romanâs unsure why he feels a small sense of relief at her answer, like anything other than that would have made him uncomfortable or upset. Solana wets her lips, continuing, âI likeâI like living here.â And in an even smaller voice, she adds, âI like being with you.â
He doesnât say anything, and neither does she. Roman is certain itâs because theyâre both trying to process and register what this may mean, what this new piece of information means for them moving forward.Â
Roman sits forward and motions with his index and middle finger. âCome here.â
He sees it instantly. The initial hesitation, the brief flash of fear, but itâs gone before he can offer reassurance. Solana lowers her legs and walks over to him, Dulce remaining sleeping and unmoving. Not once does Roman remove his gaze from her as he takes her hand, giving a gentle tug to guide her down on the sofa next to him. He slides his arm behind her, holding her body against him, his tattooed forearm across her stomach.
Roman watches the way her eyes close, recognizes that sheâs trying to manage her emotions. He sees the little nod she gives herself, as if assuring herself that sheâs safe. And he swears he sees her mouth as such.
Mouth the word âsafe.â
Solana moves her hands to his forearm, as if holding onto him for some sense of comfort.Â
He does his best to reassure her. âRelaxâŚâAnd it seems to do something to help her, offering such a simple yet strong form of solace. âIâd never send you back there. Ever.â And thatâs a fucking promise. âYouâll stay here. With me.â
âIâmââ Her voice is less emotional than before. Itâs still there, but he can tell it's waning with each second that passes, her comfort level growing. âIâm supposed to give you an heir. What ifâwhat if people startââ
âIâll take care of it.â And he will. He already started with the Elders earlier today, but she doesnât need to know that.Â
She angles her head up to look at him. âButââÂ
Roman brings his hand to her face, gently palming her cheek. âIâll take care of it.â He moves his thumb over the apple of her cheek and part of her scar. âAlright?â
Solana nods with her acknowledgement but says nothing else as she lays back against him. He notices the absence of tension and discomfort. Sheâs fully relaxed against him, and Roman acts more out of instinct than anything as he presses lips against her temple for a brief kiss, still mindful of her comfort level. âIâve got youâŚâ
Everything happening in the past few minutes has been both unexpected and confusing, but thereâs nothing confusing about the way Solana suddenly turns her body into him, laying her head on his chest. He watches her eyes close, signifying another layer of fear being peeled back.Â
He sits there for who knows how long with her, holding her, noticing the slight rise and fall of her body against his, a sign that sheâs fallen asleep. He lets her sleep, lets her rest, lets her stay close to him, under him, with him.
Roman thinks back on his question to her about what she wanted. Heâs not sure what he would have said if she said she wanted to leave, because the truth of the matter is that Romanâs starting to think that he couldnât let her go.
When Roman swung his body across Soloâs back and locked his legs and arms to Soloâs arms, attempting the Crucifix roll up ( thought of when long hair Jey Uso did it during a tag match soooooooo long ago) âŚthen Super Man punched him, did the Vince Carter âItâs Overâ gesture and tried to pin him again. That whole sequence was so beautiful to watch. He really ate this up.
