CNN creates a video displaying what it is like in these refugee camps. The videos show crowded streets filled with people that are deprived of basic necessities. People are neglecting their responsibility to assist and care for other human. The video shows at the beginning just one of the many tragedies that have occurred and how it has affected the community.

The Catholic community should reach out to these people and try and help as much as we can. We should apply all teachings but especially Rights and Responsibilities because these people now do not have a home and a country they can be proud of. They are probably unaware of their rights and even if they are, they have nothing that they can do about it. Even though we do not have the same beliefs as them, we are taught that all humans were created equal and we should treat them that way.

The Rohingya are a Muslim ethnic minority who live in Myanmar’s far western Rakhine State. Most were stripped of their citizenship by the military junta that used to rule Myanmar, and they have suffered decades of repression under the country’s Buddhist majority. Though the Rohingya refugee camps do hold both Muslims and Hindus. The Muslim in Myanmar have fled to Bangladesh in order to escape from the brutal massacres that are occurring. International leaders are deciding if they should punish them for these mass murders.

The CST of rights and responsibilities tells us that we should protect the dignity of any human and all humans. The Rohingya people and not being protected and not being treated as equals.

John Everingtpon speaks about one of the “most heinous humanitarian disasters” that is taking place today, and how the world has never been so slow to react. He tries to draw attention to the situation by posing the question “Why should we care about what is happening in the rest of the world?” As he goes on into interview with actual victims of what is going on and actually ends up answering his own question. He embodies the teaching of rights and responsibilities because it is our responsibility to care about what is going on in other places because we are knowledgable and are able of doing something about it.

This is the topic that I chose for my current event. This article from New York Times is about the current situation going on in these villages. Rakhine Buddhists have killed, tortured and raped so many of the Rohingya in the refugee camps. Reading this post is painful and hard to believe that people can induce so much violence onto other humans This pertains directly to the Catholic social teaching of Rights and Responsibilities because it shows that in certain areas, people abuse and completely reject others’ human rights.

I picked this Pdf as my fact based source because it goes so in depth into the specific theme of Rights and Duties. The first couple of pages speak about what it is, what the Catechism says about it, and where we as Catholics can find this teaching. Also there is a timeline of when certain rights came into play in the church starting at the 18th century. My favorite thing in the pdf though is the circle graph which explains all the types of human rights and goes more into specifics.

I choose these photos because this is one way that people today are fighting for their rights. My sister last year attended the Women’s march in D.C. and said that it was one of the most incredible experiences she has had because she had never seen so many women and even men come together to protect their right for equality. This to me is an example of Rights and Responsibilities.

This teaching is not something that is just part of the Catholic Church. It is a teaching that is known in most all religions and cultures. Though it is taught in different ways, I think that it just roots back to one thing: respect. If everyone were to just have respect for each other and themselves, then things such as inequality and poverty would not exist. People think that certain humans may mean more than others but as Catholics we know this not to be true but it is not practiced as much as it is taught.

Rights and responsibilities is a teaching that basically calls Catholics to protect human dignity for yourself and others. Every person should have the right to life and everything that is necessary to preserve that. In my opinion, I believe this is one of the most important teachings because many people do not understand the you do not need to tear down another’s dignity in order to maintain their own.

On the USCCB website it thoroughly explains each of the Seven Themes and when describing Rights and responsibilities it. The page has a list of scripture verses that support this teaching within the Bible. Reminding us that this is not just a teaching but a tradition that Catholics have and should be participating in order to spread Christianity.
