Gerran Howell as Dennis Whitaker The Pitt, S02E13
yeah. yup
do you wanna see the âmidwestâ with me?
this is a recolour hope u guys like it ;P farm whitaker has my heart
i think about golden retriever hybrid dennis a lot, but where almost all hybrids inhabit the form of their animal that coincides with their human age, dennis's hybrid form somehow never grew up or aged- he just stayed a puppy. he's very shy about being around other people in his hybrid form, becasue not only do people who didn't see him transform assume he's a child, he's also... a very small puppy. he's not really strong enough to run around or take care of himself in his hybrid form, so whenever he transforms, he tends to do so on his own bed so he can just lay there and burrow under blankets. his puppy body doesn't facilitate much more than that.
none of the other PTMC staff even know he's a hybrid for a very long time (aside from trinity, sworn to secrecy) since he doesn't use the facilities in their breakroom to transform and decompress like everyone else does. they all just assume that he's fully human the way fourty percent of the population are. he does feel very jealous when he sees victoria taking a nap as a little long-eared bunny rabbit on a cushion, and of the way that mckay the red setter dog gets to stretch out on the sofa to chill out, but he cant have everyone finding out that he's a tiny puppy who really would need support and active care if he transitioned at work.
that's the way it stays until they have a shift so stressful that robby and al-hashimi announce that it's in the best interests of all the hybrid staff to spend time in their animal forms before going home, so that they're less tense and more settled and all get home safely. dennis would continue to pretend that he wasnt a hybrid, but his brain has been nagging and pulling at him all day to let his muscles and body rest in the way that his puppy form let him. he *supposed* if he snuck in really quietly and picked a secluded spot in the corner, he might be overlooked and no-one would question the presence of the tiny sleepy puppy? it was worth a shot, especially with so many other hybrids around.
his plan goes well initially, going in early and finding a spot mostly hidden away and scattered with cushions he could rest his soon-to-be weak little body on, and he manages to shift with no-one seeing. now no-one knows he's dennis, and all they see is a rumpled golden puppy whose eyes are still half-closed by default and who can't bark properly, only whine softly in his throat. the first people to join don't bat an eye, changing into well-groomed cats or elegant looking snakes and huddling up on top of the cabinets to be close to the heat lamps. dennis stares at it all blearily form his place flopped on the cushions, tubby little puppy legs unable to let him trot around like the other dogs were doing.
it all goes wrong when robby, a non hybrid, walks in to check on everyone. he headcounts, seeming satisfied, and then his eyes fall on dennis, who cant help the way his teeny little tail gives it's best impression of a wag, smacking the padded material beneath him gently. robby frowns and walks over to the puppy (surely a member of staff, but who? this puppy was the age you usually saw child hybrids inhabit, and by the looks of it, a very young child too- three at maximum.) and crouches down to see him. dennis cant help how sleepy he feels and yawns, scrunching his puppy face up and then sneezing once, looking disgruntled. robby chuckled deeply and dennis couldnt take his eyes off of the older man.
"hey there, little guy, i'm not sure i've seen you around here before. who are you, little one?"
robby knew he shouldn't be addressing an adult as though they were a child, but the way the puppy was just so small and looked so soft and sleepy brought it out in him. he reached forward his hand to pet against the white-gold fur and stopped just before he did so, looking for permission. dennis blinked up at him and whined again, inching his heavy little head slightly closer to the hand. robby took that as a go ahead.
dennis, on the pillows, was in heaven. he was so tired and suddenly robby had arrived and was petting him and scratching behind his ears and it was making him feel so fucking good. he let out more squeaks and puppy noises as he craned his neck and headbutted robby's hand for more pets. robby was smiling, enamoured by this little thing that was the sweetest creature ever. he sat down on the floor next to the pup and kept petting.
dennis, blissed out as he was from all the pets, saw his opportunity. he fought against his weak limbs and tiny body, and made a collosal effort to flop his body onto robby's legs, aiming at shuffling his way into his lap to get more of the attention he was being lathered with. robby let him crawl on, battling the urge to coo and settling to puppy carefully on him.
robby scritched him behind the ears some more, petted down his back, praised the little doggy profusely... all while dennis was falling asleep. robby noticed the dead weight of the little thing and looked down to see his eyes shut and his golden face peaceful. if he listened closely, he could even hear huffy, deep breaths telling him his new little friend was taking a nap.
robby couldn't help it, he leant back against the wall and hoisted the puppy to lay on his chest, holding it securely against him like a baby, its warm weight and gentle snuggles making his eyes heavy too. the rest of the hybrids watched now in curiosity as their boss fell asleep under the weight of a pup.
several hours later, robby wakes up. the room is empty except for them, and the weight on his chest is now less puppy and more adult human. he looks down and sees golden curls buried in his neck and a very distinctive young doctor cuddled up to him. dennis whitaker.
robby nearly laughed out loud. of *course* the adorable cuddly baby puppy was the unendingly sweet intern he'd come to be besotted with. of course it was the intern that he'd like to kiss and cuddle and take out to dinner. he decided to wait, wanting to take as much time with dennis as possible.
when dennis did wake up to find himself using his boss as a pillow and knowing robby knew now that he was a hybrid, he went white with fear. he tried to scamper off, but robby held him firm, looking into clear blue eyes.
"you make a pretty cute little puppy, dennis."
it's not long before he's *robby's* beloved little puppy.
(who robby found in the breakroom...)
dennis the thief whitaker may have taken some souvenirs from house sitting
forever amused when media's use certain photos
interesting photo choice...
whenever dennis gets sick, he scurries away and hides. itâs so shameful, for some reason, when his own body gives up on him. it fills him with this burning humiliation and he canât deal with the fact of anyone knowing.
so he doesnât say anything, to anyone.
for some odd reason the people closest to him have this ability to sniff him out like a dog, so he has to be extra careful. he keeps any physical discomfort to a minimum. he will smile straight through the stabbing headache, and stand like a heavy post through dizzy sways. dennis will brave through the day, everyone none the wiser to the boiling inside of him.
but at night he sinks into his bed, just so tired and so heavy. through feverish dreams his mind conjures up fake dreams of his mothers hands carding through his hair. or maybe even his dad at the edge of his bed holding a spoonful of medicine.
âopen up denny. it wonât taste good but i promise youâll feel better.â
but itâs not real. none of that was. there was no time to be sick back in his childhood house. no excuse.
he remembers crying through sunday morning, getting ready for mass. feeling so so sick and too ashamed to say anything, knowing what consequences would follow.
dennis would hold his hurting belly like it could keep the hurt from pouring out. only late at night would he let it spill out all alone hunched over the toilet, trying to contain his cries.
heâs a doctor know. he can rationalize it. the bacterial contact, the contaminations, the lowered immune system fighting out whateverâs in. he knows fevers are just like a compass pointing north, a signal that says something is wrong. he should know heâs not magically doing it on purpose, and dennis should know it doesnât make him pathetic or weak.
but it doesnât work like that, not really.
so he continues licking his wounds in private.
when he wakes up still feeling the same, if not worse, he cries silently staring at the mirror. heâs trying so hard to keep it all inside but he can feel it staring to bubble up inside him.
he swallows around the lump in his throat and gets ready for his shift. he doesnât eat, he canât stomach it, and hides that fact from trinity.
in fact he hides everything, from everyone.
he starts avoiding everyone like the plague. this odd game of if i canât see them they canât see me. itâs childish. but at least it keeps him busy from the fact that his symptoms are worsening.
dennis really avoids robby. itâs hard, obviously, thatâs his boss and now boyfriend. but he knows the man can catch a lie like a blood sniffing shark.
heâs grateful, for the first time, that jack is on night shift. thereâs only so much hiding he can do from one of his boyfriends, imagine two. so dennis tends to his patient, doesnât let anything get in his way. but deep down heâs so miserable. he doesnât really know what he wants, but he just wants it to go away.
the end of his shift is approaching and dennis canât help but be glad that soon itâs over. he knows heâs not at his best, and if he continues at this rate his coworkers are definitely going to notice something is off.
just when heâs about to head out, already longing for his bed and four tylenols, he feels a heavy hand land on his shoulder.
âwhitaker. a word please.â robbyâs smooth voice cuts through the silence. and dennis doesnât know what the older man sees in his face for him to continue with a sharp ânow.â, but he follows anyways.
and now heâs cornered. jack has apparently materialized next to them, and dennis is now standing between his two partners being stared at like an alien.
jack doesnât say anything as he stares him up and down, nor as he brings up a hand to dennisâ forehead.
âhey!â dennis says as he swats jacks hand away. which is the wrong move, as the jerky movement causes his stomach to lurch like a wave. he clamps his mouth shuts and wills the nausea away.
the older man simply ignores his little tantrum and continues on, âyouâre hot. not warm dennis, hot. youâre pale, breathings larbored, and even a little green.â
âiâm not.â dennis says petulantly like a child, the phantom feeling of his leg stomping coursing through him.
jack tsks. âyeah and iâm batman.â he scoffs. âyouâre sick, and youâre pretending youâre not. which is worse than just admitting that youâre sick.â
dennis turns his head away. âiâm not sick. iâm fine. and iâm going home.â
a hand shoots out to grip his wrist. ânot alone, youâre not.â robby interjects. âyouâve been sick all day. iâve noticed. others noticed. letâs get you home okay? you need to rest.â he ends softly.
and dennis feels his stomach turns again, out of nausea or shame he canât tell. but it twists a knife inside of him, the thought that he wasnât able to hide it well enough. not just because he was found out, but because it means he failed. he failed at the simplest thing, to keep the hurt to himself.
tears pool in his sad round eyes. his shoulders square up for something, he just doesnât know what. he knows robby and jack would never hurt him. but just because they havenât, doesnât mean nobody else ever has.
âno. no, iâll go to apartment. im fine.â dennis says quietly, trying to pry his wrist from robbyâs grip.
âden come on, are you gonna keep lying to us? to yourself?â jack says, and despite the words sounding harsh theyâre delivered with hurt.
but to dennis this isnât easy. saying heâs sick is like admitting defeat. itâs like pulling teeth.
saying he wasnât feeling well as a kid only got him hurt, and he wonât let that happen to him ever again. doesnât matter whatever he has to put himself through to keep people from finding out.
the tears rear their ugly head and fall down the slope of his fever flushed cheeks.
âiâm sorry. im sorry i tried to stop it. im sorry. i dont know. i dont know.â dennis whispers softly between hitches of his breath.
suddenly dennis is wrapped in warm strong arms. âdennis hey, itâs okay. itâs okay we got ya.â a hand makes his way to his head to brush through his curls.
âi donât know why i get like this.â dennis cries, âim sorry.â
dennis does know. thatâs the worst part. he knows how he would get hurt when he was sick. how there was no rest, no comfort. medicine wasnât something his family kept. he would simply have to ride out the waves on his own and pray to god he would take it all away from him.
heâs shushed softly, âdonât worry about it baby itâs okay. youâre okay. letâs get you home and get some food in you okay? youâre okayâ a kiss lands on his temple.
the ride to jack and robbyâs house was quiet. dennis was laying on jacks lap in the back seat, feeling calloused hands tuck curls behind his ears, missing the concerned glances robby was sending through the rear view mirror and the silent conversation with jack robby was having.
âi thought you worked tonight.â dennis says, muffled against jacks strong thigh.
ânot today sweetheart, donât worry about it.â
when they arrive at the house jack leads him to the couch and helps him lay down. he removed dennisâ scrubs and replaces them with a soft pair of sweatpants and an old college hoodie belonging to robby.
the older pair take turns feeding him spoonfuls soup and re-wetting the damp rag on his forehead.
âi wish you wouldâve told us you werenât feeling well.â jack says softly as his hand finds his way to dennis soft hair? subtlety checking if the fever has gone down. âi know itâs not easy, but you havenât said why.â
ânot that you have to, not now.â robby interjects, setting the almost empty bowl of soup on the coffee table.
dennis shrugs and hides more into jacks lap. âitâs stupid.â he murmurs into the warm skin.
âitâs not stupid if it makes you rather hide and be miserable than accept help.â
dennis sniffles, âletâs talk about it later alright? just focus on resting.â robby says as he bends to lay a soft kiss on dennis flushed cheek.
the younger man obeys and shuts his eyes. he will open up tomorrow, right now he can soak up all the comfort he never got as a child. heâll appreciate the hand in his hair, the thigh under his head, the soup in his stomach, and the constant fever checks. heâll let the older pair mother hen around his sickness, even though itâs hard to wave that white flag around.
soon enough heâll learn itâs okay to ask for help.
robby spoiling dennis never ever gets old for me. dennis is very low maintenance, something brought on to the extreme through his long period of homelessness, and never buys anything unnecessary- or anything he wants at all. new jumper? no, his current one is fine, he can fix the hole again. a soft, plush stuffed animal to cuddle? no, he can sleep without it even if he's drawn to its cute smile and fluffy fur. even fresh produce is often given up by him if he can survive on the canned alternative.
robby *hates* this. he's not angry at dennis of course, he's angry at the system that made his boy on and off homeless for almost three years. he hates that his dennis won't even buy a fresh vegetable because hes so worried about his next meal. robby knows he won't be able to change dennis and fix him fast, trauma like dennis's doesn't just go away as soon as he has place to live, but he can still spoil him. if they're "gifts", denny can't refuse.
any piece of clothing robby thinks dennis will like- he's got it. soft jumpers and new jeans and warm coats and fleeces and fun socks and even cashmere scarfs and hats for winter. real leather boots as well as converse, enough scrubs that he'd never have to rely on the hospital machine. dennis protests at first- what a collosol waste of money when his old clothing was fine! (it wasn't, it was worn and tattered and faded) but soon he realises robby can't be stopped. he still doesn't buy anything for himself, but he knows his protests do nothing against his boyfriend.
now the clothes are sorted, robby moves on to fun things. a fancy gaming console and the games that went with it so that his boy could play with his friends (dennis had sobbed and begged robby to send it back due to the cost, but the older was adamant, telling dennis he deserved to have fun- Trinity's delight somewhat helped dennis reckon with the gift), books upon books upon books, and stuffed animals galore.
so many stuffed animals. he'd been denied a single one during his childhood, and so dennis was presented with sharks and bears and puppies and birds and kittens, all fluffy and smiling and so, so cuddly. though he hated the expense, he soon found himself snuggling up close and holding them in his arms while robby held him in his. he slept well like that, both cuddled and cuddling. it warms robby's heart.
seeing dennis in good, well made clothes and fed good nutritious meals and reading new books and cuddling new toys all made robby the happiest man alive. of course, his dennis had a long way to go in terms of finding peace and security after homelessness (and robby was well aware that many of his tendencies would never go away), but being able to give his boy a good life and a comfortable life and a happy life was so important to him.
hes more than content to spend the night holding both dennis and his stuffed shark close if that's what dennis needs (even if he won't admit it). he'll buy his boy everything on earth if he thought it would make his baby happy.
like so true imo

hucklerobby fluff
In a world where Omegas are forced to marry and have children by the age of 25 (obviously for their own safety, of course, to prevent some crazy Alpha from harming them, to let them work freely without Alphas bothering them, etc.), or the government will choose an Alpha for you (usually an older one, possibly a widower or someone with issues like anger management, etc., because all the good matches have already been taken), Dennis hasnât been able to find anyone and now finds himself in a courtroom, waiting to be assigned to some random Alpha.
The judge was magnanimous; seeing that Dennis had studied medicine, he assigned him an Alpha doctor so he could also be looked after at work.
Michael Robinavitch isnât the Alpha Dennis had expected.
Not only is he an absolutely handsome and charming man, but he also seems incredibly kind?
But Robby hates this situation. He hates that a handsome, cheerful kid like Dennis has to be tied to a lone wolf like him -to someone whoâs depressed, tired, and on the brink of the abyss.
On the other hand, Dennis doesnât know how to interpret Robbyâs behavior. Itâs clear that Robby cares, but he keeps his distance -one day he strokes his cheek and looks at him with eyes full of something, and the next day he avoids him like the plague.
Then thereâs the issue of sex. Because the law also requires them to have offspring (unless they have some kind of illness), and Dennis canât get the way Robby touches him when theyâre together out of his head, the stolen kisses in the dark, and Robbyâs scent as he comes inside Dennis.
But then came the complete estrangement. The coldness. And Dennis really doesn't know what to think.
Dennis is at least happy that things are going well at work, that he's made new friends, and also that Robby is his boss because he's a wonderful boss. And Dennis is head over heels in love.
And, it seems, pregnant.
Dennis isnât quite sure how to handle it all. Heâs happy. Heâs absolutely happy. And Robby is wonderful. He makes sure Dennis has everything he needs, helps him, and comforts him when Dennis feels down and his hormones start to kick in; he never loses his patience, and whenever possible, he stays by his side.
Theyâve even started sleeping in the same bed -Robbyâs too anxious to leave Dennis alone in case he needs something- but Dennisâs happiness is overshadowed by sadness every time he remembers why Robby is doing this.
Not out of love, but out of obligation. And sometimes Dennis just canât take it anymore; sometimes Dennis feels incredibly lonely and sad.
Itâs on one of those days -with his due date just under two months away- that Robby goes to work and stays longer than usual (Dennis hasnât worked since he found out he was pregnant; working in the ER is too stressful for his condition), and Dennis finds himself spending 15 hours of his day alone, at home, with his hormones running wild and tears coming easily, as he spirals into thoughts of Robby doesnât want me.
And when Robby gets home, he can already tell that somethingâs wrong.
Dennis isnât on the couch watching TV and complaining about his back; he isnât eating ice cream straight from the tub on the kitchen table; he isnât belting out a song that Michael doesnât know a single word of.
The house is silent, but an aura of despair hangs in the air, and Robby runs up the stairs and opens the bedroom door.
Dennis is lying in bed, his back to the door, and heâs shaking uncontrollably.
Robby kneels down in front of him, his heart in his throat, and asks whatâs wrong. Dennis looks at him with teary eyes and shakes his head, saying itâs nothing, that thereâs no reason to worry, but Robby insists.
And Dennis tells a half-truth.
âI was feeling lonely,â he says, and then -because he just canât hold it back- âI missed you.â
Robby climbs onto the bed and pulls Dennis close, murmuring nonsense as he strokes his hair and kisses his temples.
And Robby makes a decision, too- thereâs no way heâs going to leave Dennis alone for all those hours, not when heâs in such a state.
He pulls out his phone and calls the hospital to tell them heâs taking a vacation, effective immediately.
Dennisâs eyes widen as he looks up at him, shaking his head, but Robby kisses his forehead and wipes a tear from his cheek with his thumb while listening to the person on the other end of the line respond, until something makes his face contort- Dennis has never seen him this angry.
âI donât care, I will not leave my mate alone, find a way,â and with that, he hangs up and tosses the phone somewhere behind him.
Dennis looks at him, his eyes wide.
âYour mate?â
And Robby has never called him âmate.â Heâs never called him anything other than Dennis. And mate is a big word. Itâs more than âmy omega,â and Dennis looks at him with hopeful eyes, and Robby has just realized what he said.
And Robby wishes he could take it back. Heâd like to give Dennis a better life than this, but Dennis grabs his shirt with both hands and repeats, âYour mate?â and he looks so hopeful that Robbyâs heart is in his throat.
âOnly if you want to.â
And yes, Dennis absolutely wants to.
âHappy Fatherâs Day, Robbyâ„ïžâ
