Community and awareness. As I thought about my performance art piece I wanted to do a piece that would make people think about the world we live in. Mental health needs to take a priority in our day to day lives. We have to break the stigma associated with it. In the last year and a half I have lost my two oldest sons to addiction and suicide. I did some research and in 2022, in Denver County alone, there were 475 deaths to suicide and overdose. In light of these astonishing statistics I decided to do a piece that would bring awareness to these areas. I had 475 pieces of paper and 475 pins and I asked people to write down one word or action that they could do to make a difference in the mental health community. I started with the words community and awareness. Community because that is what has helped carry me over the last year and a half. The people that surround me, love me, hold space for me, and support me. Family, friends, fellow students, professors; all of who have helped me grow. Awareness because we have to speak out; we have to bring people to action. I plan to do pop ups of this same project over the next couple of months throughout Denver County until all 475 pieces of paper are pinned up and awareness is spreading. Peace and love.
