A review on Hallie Baltar’s reader response critique paper about “Footnote to Youth” by Jose Garcia Villa

         In Hallie’s reader response critique paper, she focused on relating the story on how the Filipino's follow the same path as Dodong did in the story. According to her, the story serves as a wake-up call to the Filipinos. She also mentioned the similarity of decisions between the past generation which is in the story is Dodong and the new generation which is Blas, Dodong's son. She concluded her critique paper with a compliment to the author's clear explanation of the whole story.

      In my perspective, I concentrated on how the story struck the minds of the youth of today.  There are many realizations that the youth can absorb from the story. I also focused and compared the story to the situations happening to teenagers nowadays when it comes to relationships. However, Hallie and I, both agreed on how the story taught us that rash decisions can affect one's life.

          The beginning of the story approaches the simple life of Dodong’s family. They live in a rural area where there is a field. Dodong wears a gray undershirt and red kundiman shorts that indicates that they are not that wealthy. The lines "The petroleum lamp on the ceiling already was lighted and the low unvarnished square table was set for supper. His parents and he sat down on the floor around the table to eat. They had fried fresh-water fish, rice, bananas, and caked sugar."   was shown by the author to tell the readers the social status of the characters. The story also revealed that because of the unwealthy life of the characters, they suffered to have a big family.

      This short story gave realizations to the readers, especially to the youth. Dodong was a great representation of it. He gave us a moral that rushing should not be an option in life because when you rush, there is a big possibility that you will regret the things you did and will be wishing to go back. The story reached the thoughts of the young readers about marriage and relationships. The lesson to the readers is that relationships should be handled responsibly, and marriage should not be a spur-of-the-moment decision. The author greatly impacted the readers by giving an impression using his work.

A feminist criticism about “Footnote to Youth” by Jose Garcia Villa

            This short story conveyed to the readers how it is like to be a man, a woman, a father, and a mother. The main character, Dodong, made the readers realize that being a young father is not an easy job. Dodong’s parents brought an idea to the readers of how patriarchal their family is. The decisions of Dodong's father were important especially on Dodong's marriage. Meanwhile, Dodong’s mother is seen to be only doing a lot of houseworks and chores. It also resembles the role of Teang when she became a mother. She was tired because she always needs to look after her children and do the chores while Dodong works. The author pointed out how gender roles work in this story.

A formalist criticism about “Footnote to Youth” by Jose Garcia Villa

           The line “The sun was salmon and hazy in the west.” was the first sentence that you will read in this short story. It was a perfect metaphor to give the readers a hint of what the ambiance of the setting looks like in the story. As I continue the read the story, every situation was given by the author a good description. Though what was happening in the scenes was not said directly, the author gave implicit sentences that create images in the readers’ minds. The emotions of the characters were delivered clearly with the help of the script. Thus, this literary piece has good imagery and metaphors that gave life to this short story.

A Marxist criticism about “When I See a Barong Barong” by Maximo Ramos

      The poet revealed the post-war socioeconomic status of the Filipinos back then. His intention was to explain to the readers the life of those people who tried to get back on their feet after a tragic situation. There was a great depression at that time but Maximo Ramos did not focus on pitying the people. Instead, he turned his poem to writing about the promising resiliency of the Filipinos. The poem depicts a strong sense of nationalism, demonstrating a positive regard for one's fellowmen during difficult times.

      In the ninth line of the poem, Ramos said that “I joy to discover that they are whole and remained unbroken in spirit”. It hints about why the poem had this title, and that is because when he sees a barong barong, he feels a sense of pride. He does not look at the makeshift shanties with a negative thought. Hence, when he sees those shanties, he is constantly reminded of the strong Filipinos that handle the bitterness of life like a piece of cake, and that inspired him to write this poem.

A feminist criticism about “He Who Sleeps on My Lap” by Ronald Baytan

This poem shows how the male friend disagreed when his other male friend said that he is a man, and a man needs a woman. The writer’s purpose is to give a hint to the readers that this poem is not just any other love poem hence the story revolves around how homosexuals struggle to be loved. This piece manifests the hidden emotions of homosexuals, and how fear haunts them as they desire to show their true selves. The structure of the texts helped on conveying the longingness of a person in one-sided love. The language used was in its simplest form yet it delivered the true purpose of the poem.

Every line leads to the emotions of the narrator which is important in poems so that it will not bring confusion to the readers. As the poem nears the ending, the writer made the readers learn about the captive life of homosexuals. The narrator who wishes to reveal his feelings towards his friend was blocked by the fright that he was feeling, and he thinks it may lead to mockery or shame. He has his mouth to speak but he cannot say all the feelings because of possible conflict.  Because of that, he just hoped that a miracle will happen that when his friend wakes up, he will be the one whom his friend will love. This literary work has great value for it vividly told the perspective of homosexuals that can give reflections and realizations to the readers.

A critique about "If You Forget Me” by Pablo Neruda

The poem intends to deliver how frustrating it is to leave and to be left by someone you deeply admire. On these lines of the poem, 

“ everything carries me to you,

as if everything that exists,

aromas, light, metals,

were little boats

that sail

toward those isles of yours that wait for me.” ,

I perceive it as how hard it is to forget the person for the memories still linger. It shows the real meaning of love although the tone of the poem is unhappy. The overall purpose and intent of this poem are to convey to the readers that if you have your passion and fondness for someone you should be willing to make sacrifices.

Each part of the texts is significant because it brings awareness to the readers of the feeling of despair when ending a relationship. Readers can grasp this poem as a lesson on how you should love your significant other so that love would not waver. My explication towards this literary piece is that the process of being away from someone you are used to be with is tough but you need to bear with it so that you will be able to focus on yourself. The work’s value is through realization. Pablo Neruda distinctly brought his reflections of love through this poem.

Summary of the essay “Where’s the Patis?” by Carmen Guerrero-Nakpil

The essay is about a Filipino who goes abroad. As days go by, he is slowly adapting to the culture of foreigners and he is glad about it. When sat down for a meal, he feels something that’s not making him contented. Even if a delicious looking food  was served to him, he doesn’t feel like eating it. One thing’s for sure, he misses the Filipino cuisine. No matter how hard he tried to turn his back to his country, there is still nothing like our own food and it surely made him miss the Philippines more.

Ⓢⓔⓐⓣⓦⓞⓡⓚ “Is it necessary for a student to utilize the use of academic text when internet connection is ready to use?”

In my opinion, the use of academic texts is a must for students. Most of the information that can be found on the internet are not verified. Internet may be faster and easier to use but not all people can afford it. On the other hand, academic texts give us accurate data because it goes through a lot of studies before it can be published. By academic texts, we can gather trustworthy knowledge. Academic texts are necessary as it serves as the students guide in their continuous learning. Students should not keep up with the internet since it can also have an impact on our health. When we read texts on our gadgets, vision problems may occur. The purpose of academic texts should also be given recognition. Academic texts are not created for nothing. We should learn its purpose because researchers produced them for their reliability to the people. So in conclusion, yes, a student must utilize the use of academic text even when an internet connection is ready to use.

It’s a good thing that our government is adding more countries for the said travel ban here in our country but in my opinion, they should've rushed it since the day they knew there was a new Covid variant. All the people who will come from other countries shouldn't be let in. There's a news article that I also read yesterday that a person from Hong Kong who was in Manila tested positive for the new variant of the virus. I think that happened because we lack consistency. If the government wants us to be free from the virus, they should always prepare for the worst-case scenarios that might happen, they should be more strict, and implement more effective quarantine protocols.

Okay lang, my Christmas vacation is okay lang. 2020 was a chaotic year for all of us, but it made us believe that the true spirit of Christmas is not just about grand parties, but it is indeed by giving love and joy to one another. ♡

My realization as a first time SHS student is that you should learn to love every topic that is being taught to you despite it’s difficulty. You must do every single work with your full effort and confidence so that you won’t be disappointed with the outcomes. ;)
