he couldn’t help the little laugh that escaped his lips. he wasn’t even sure the last time a laugh like that left his lips. he had no idea what was going on, how he was such a different person in the matter of weeks. marilyn had brought out that teenager he once was. they had time to make up for, she was his soulmate and he was also head over heels in love with her. one arm wrapped around her waist as he lifted her easily, pressing her back against the cold wall, lining himself up and pressing into her easily. a low groan leaving his lips as he found hers to kiss softly. “i swear every time i enter you i have to fight back coming right then.”

Zoe’s comment didn’t make him feel any better about the conversation they were about to have. There it was, the first question. The hardest one of them all “Zoe yes but it wasn’t because i had that intention. Your mother told me she was pregnant with zayden and we were so young, i freaked out. I said i couldnt do it and i went and got drunk and ran into old friends and that’s when i slept with her, it was a one time thing. I realized the next morning i had to go back to your mom, i wanted her and your brother.” he knew that it wouldn’t make any of it better to her. “Shh, Zoe I don’t want anyone knowing” he said looking around for a moment but the few there weren’t paying attention. Seeing her eyes well with tears only made his do the same. This was the last thing he wanted, he hated seeing her cry. And knowing it was his fault only made it worse. “No, no I’m not sliding away. I’m not doing that to you, i promised you i wouldn’t.” he shook his head, trying to keep his own tears back “i didnt plan this, it just happened. Zoe you and your siblings are my family, I’m not giving you guys up.” he stood and tried to argue before taking a deep breath “Zo, please. I don’t want to lose you guys again. I dont know what I’ll do.”

“The first thing you did after finding out about Zayden was leave and… fuck some other girl? I don’t care if you were drunk! Look at what you did! Now you have another son out there who grew up without a dad.” Zoe wasn’t just heartbroken she was furious. “I don’t care what you want. People are going to find out eventually unless you really find some way to disappear this time around. It’s a small island, it’s going to be no time before everyone knows.” Zoe hated to yell at her father, all she ever wanted was happiness between them but that seemed impossible. Tears streamed down her face and she hiccuped through her words at this point. Sure it was terrible to demand so much attention from her father but she’d been selfish when it came to him. “How am I supposed to believe that? You did it before and now you have some other lady and this baby to go and be with.” Zoe shook her head as she took a few steps toward the door. “I don’t want to speak to you.” She sighed before trying to stay strong enough to make it out the door before completely breaking down.

Johnny’s hand came back down to smack the bar “dammit Zoe, i was a teenager. what more do you expect from me? I’ve been a constant fuck up my entire life. It’s not something that just happened overnight. I didn’t mean to leave him without a father, i didnt know about him. I would have done my best to include him. But I didn’t get that chance.” he rubbed his face “i know people are going to find out. I expect that but not yet, it’s still too early on. We don’t want everyone finding out and then something happen.” he was irritated and hurt and he wished he didn’t have to have this conversation with his daughter “I’m not going to disappear. I’m here, i told you i wouldnt leave you again.” he couldn’t help the few tears that had ran down his face. “Zoe it doesn’t have to be like that, I’m not choosing sides. I want to be able to have all of you guys in my life. Please.” he tried to beg as she had made her way towards the door. Her final words were like a knife in his chest.

And then after that of course I’d close up shop” he teased before nodding “that’s totally fine, just as long as it’s not on display in the living room.” he laughed “I’m good with that. Mar, I’m excited. Honestly. marilyn’s head tilted slightly at the thought of having even more kids with johnny.. after this one.. and she just couldn’t help the butterflies and how her heart fluttered. “- i mean maybe..” she muttered, lifting her hand to push some of her blonde locks away from her face. feeling her heart fluttering again listening to every single word that left him “im starting to think so too..” she said softly as she kissed him back, gaze lowering to watch him get undressed stepping into the shower, looking back at her, it didn’t take much hesitation for her to move her fingers to the bottom of the top she had on slipping it over her head then move to under the waistband of her panties “and let you be by yourself, no..” she muttered as her panties dropped to the floor, and she moved in with him

He found his heart beating faster and faster when she asked who his soulmate was, this wasn’t one thing he needed to tell her. So many things had happened over the course of two months and he wasn’t quite sure where to start. “Her name is Marilyn.” He paused, gulping “i actually grew up with her. we were good friends in high school and uh she’s here now. came to reconnect with her kids…” he closed his eyes for a moment, not sure how this next part would come out “one of her kids actually being my son i didnt know about. i recently found out about him, he’s a few months younger than Zayden.” he knew this one would be the cherry on the top but he didn’t want to leave any secrets behind, he wanted it all out there. “You’re also going to be a big sister, it’s still extremely early, we just found out. I dont even really have my head wrapped around it all, but Zoe, I’m happy. I don’t even know the last time that happened, before your mom and i split at least and that’s been such a long time.”

“I think he took that long because he is just as stubborn as Zayden.” Zoe said with a chuckle. “But yes, he did get the snuggle of approval.” Zoe only expected to have a good conversation with her father. She had been so excited to speak to Johnny ever since she found out. But the more that her father spoke about this match… this Marilyn, the more her heart began to drop until she suddenly felt overwhelmed. “Younger…than Zayden?” She shook her head and bit her lip. “Dad… you didn’t c-cheat on mom…did you?” She asked. How could one person as small as Zoe take in that mouthful of information. A secret half-brother from an affair and now her father was just starting this new family. “You’re having a baby?!” She shouted out. It would have been something she wanted to be happy for him about. But how could she? Her eyes began to swell with tears and her throat went tight. “So that’s it? Another excuse to slide away from us! You were just starting to fix things between us and now this?!” Zoe got up from her seat, shaking her head. “I…I don’t want to…I can’t talk to you. All I wanted was my dad back, I wanted to know what it would have been like to have my dad around as a kid. But I guess it’s great for you, go off and have a great fucking life with your new family, dad.”

“I don’t know how much working i actually get done around here, so you’re not too much of a bother.” he said giving her a slight nudge “really? he seems like a pretty interesting guy. as long as he treats you well that’s all i’m worried about. i want you happy and safe at all times.” he gave a soft smile “that really is the best part, actually caring for the person before you find out their your match.” he took a deep breath finishing the sentence. “a lot actually, kiddo.” he turned to look at her, his lips pressed “i found my match too actually…” he started “someone i’ve known for a long time, who recently came back into my life.”

Zoe had to wonder what her father meant when he said he handn’t been working as much. It didn’t sound like him. But she let him talk, figuring he’d explain eventually. “He is and Zavacado likes him so it’s pretty nice to know that my baby approves of him.” She said with a laugh. At first with him saying he found his match excited her, sure it was a pinch that her mother wasn’t that for him but she was glad he knew now, it had been long enough. “Really? when she’d had her daughter, she thought having her father around was gonna make her happy, would fill the void that had formed not having had johnny there for michael.. but it hadn’t worked.. and that was why they divorced, cause she wasn’t able to make someone else fill the king size hole in her heart.. her blues looked at him as he spoke, “ as if it would be anyone else…” she muttered , gently nudging him before feeling the kiss to her forehead. “oh come on baby.. you men can be in your late 70s pumping out babies, no problem..” she joked, feeling a smile spread across her lips before turning her head a little to look at the test once more. “– is it weird that i kinda wanna frame and keep it..?”

“i know you haven’t left my bed in weeks” he laughed “you’re right and that problem is that’s probably going to be me.” his laughter had now turned into a full on belly laugh as he began to brush his teeth. hearing her question his eyes narrowed before he spit out the toothpaste “yes it would be weird, if you do it at least keep it hidden somewhere. if the kids see that it will really be the end of the world” he smiled giving her a quick peck. “god, a baby” he shook his head “even though i figured i’d be getting grandkids soon i’m excited we’re getting one of our own.” he grinned before moving across the shower to turn the water on.

“I’m just glad you can still make time for me while you’re working.” She said with a laugh. Sometimes she tried to still the little princess act with Johnny but she just wanted what she missed. She hugged him back with a huge grin and nodded. “I know! It’s so… weird. But he’s so great. He’s pretty different than me… in a good way! He’s calm and sweet. He actually is the cartoonist at the newspaper here. We’ve kind of been taking things slow so we know for sure but he just has given me no reason not to trust him.” Zoe rambled about the boy before looking at the mark again. “I don’t know. I still think it’s so weird. I hated the idea before and now I am glad I have it. Not that I wasn’t having feelings for Sam before we found out of course. Because that was kind of the best part.” She began to chuckle. “I’m rambling, what have you been doing, dad?”

he made everything better.. johnny made everything so so much better. just having him in her ear, telling her everything would be ok as he gently caressed the back of her head. she felt kinda stupid now for never having told him about michael when she’d first found out about him.. maybe she could’ve had all of this then..the more he spoke, the more she calmed down, they had each other this time.. carefully she moved her head slightly, feeling the man’s rough hand rest aganist her cheek, she looked up at him and nodded. “i love you too.. and im so glad its you..” she said before softly kissing him back

johnny smiled when marilyn said she loved him too, he was glad it was him. they didn’t get this the first time around and now they would finally get to exprience this together. “hey i mean honestly i’m glad it’s me too. i’d be pretty bummed if it was some other dude.” he tried to joke, giving her forehead a quick kiss. “i’m also really proud of myself, i’ve still got it in me. i’m like a baby making machine.” he smirked before turning to grab his toothbrush and toothpaste to begin brushing his teeth.

Johnny’s hand reached out behind him as he leaned back and found the marble from the sink and he continued to look at the rest. so many thoughts running through his head yet he wasn’t able to comprehend anything. he shook his head and looked at Marilyn, still in shock. There was no way, they were older and they had kids in their twenties “no…” he started and dropped the rest on the counter before reaching for her arm “it’s okay, I’m in shock. this is a lot. I honestly never thought about it happening, damn now i sound like myself twenty five years ago.” he mumbled followed by a dumb laugh “I’m here this time though, we’ll figure it out. our kids will hate us but it will be okay.” his hand moving up and down her arm slowly.

she was almost certain that had she been given a few more seconds she would’ve broken down, scared of starting a major down ward spiral which had caused her to lose her children in the first place.. but instead she felt johnny take her arm. her eyes were still wet, and she was almost certain they would stay that way for a long while.. her hues just following him as he spoke, trying to smile as he joked, but instead she just found herself glancing into his eyes, and slowly but surely as he slowly stroke her arm, her arms came around him, closing her eyes tight shut as her face hid against his bare chest.. her arms cooked around hist waist, behind his back, wanting nothing but to stay that way forever, cause she didn’t want to think about anything else.. she didn’t want her children to hate her more than they already did.. she didn’t want johnny’s children to hate her as well.. she just wanted things to kinda just pass. “– i just don’t know what to do..”

Johnny hated seeing her like this, he wanted to make things better, give her some hope. Feeling her wrap her arms around him he brought his hand to the back of her head as held her close “shh, it’s okay” he cooed “listen to me...” he started “this is mainly my fault that we’re here, again. but I’m not going anywhere, every step of the way I’m here.” His hand went to cup her face, his thumb trailing over her cheek. “I love you and i love our baby already. We can do this, okay?” he mumbled before pressing his lips to hers softly.

Johnny was in the back, unpacking boxes and stocking things when he heard a faint ‘dad’ he knew who it was immediately and a small smile formed on his lips. He hadn’t seen his youngest in a few weeks and he had missed her. He quickly remembered the news he had recently found out and he still hadn’t found the right way to tell her. “I’ll be right there” he called out before he made his way to the front. “Hey sweetheart” he mused as he came and took a seat next to her “I’ve missed you, what have you been up to?”

Zoe was obviously beaming with light as she saw her father come into the room. “I know, I’ve been meaning to come around and see you but I’ve just been really busy.” Zoe was practically bouncing in her seat just ready to tell him what happened. “I have the biggest news, dad.” She said holding up her arm and showing him the bracelet-less wrist that now showed off her mark. “I met him… my match. I actually found it and he’s been so amazing so far.”

Johnny nodded “yeah, no i understand. I’ve been pretty busy too. I wanted to invite you over to dinner though, next weekend if you’re free of course.” he tilted his head slightly when she said she had big news. Seeing the bracelet-less arm his mouth dropped slightly, he knew she had been covering the mark for far too long. “Zoe bug! I’m so excited for you!” He cheered before pulling her into a hug “what’s he like? how do you feel about it all?”

“Dad!” Zoe called out to through the bar as she usually did. She didn’t mind of she was bothering people, by now if they weren’t used to her they would just need to get over it. “Dad?” She said one more time to make sure he heard her calling. Zoe was ecstatic, she honestly couldn’t imagine things being better and it was about time after knowing things were slowly only getting better with Sam that she told her father that she found her match… and she was happy to be around him. Sitting at the bar her feet swung patiently waiting for the man to come to her.

He could have swore he was still asleep standing there in the doorway, he continued to rub his eyes trying to come to. Marilyn hadn’t said anything yet and he titled his head to the side before moving toward her, wrapping his arms around her waist “You okay?” he asked as his lips kissed her neck. He finally looked over her shoulder to see the test and one hand came to grab it, bringing it closer to his view. “Is this yours?” he asked seeing the red lines “you’re…are we..?” he asked unable to find words for a minute.

she hadn’t felt like this since the day she’d found out she was having michael.. and maybe not even then was it completely similar.. the first time she’d been beyond surprised, but scared.. so so scared.. and now she wasnt even sure what she was going to feel.. she was scared, surprised, excited, happy, terrified.. and she stayed completely still in shock, all until she felt johnny’s touch, his kiss, but before she’d gotten the time to catch up with her brain, and react he’d taken the test out of her hands, bringing it closer for him to see. thats when the panic in her really set in. part of her was again sent back to 24 years ago, scared to tell him, scared that if he knew he’d leave her.. tears started running down her face as she tried looking back at him through her tears, “– i don’t.. i-i’m sorry..”
