Though Avery and Chong were engage to be married, she didn’t realize she would have to show up at events so soon. Now all the wives of the court wanted to meet her, perhaps it was because Zhao couldn’t keep his mouth shut. Everyone wanted to see what the future foreign wife of Jia Chong looked like, they wanted to observe her behavior and see if she truly belonged with them. Luckily after spending a majority of the morning with them, Avery was able to sneak out to catch her breath.
Thats when she saw, Chong too, was away from the other men - Did he need a breath of fresh air as well? Maybe she was in a mischievous mood, wanting to get back at him for leaving her alone in there, not coming to her rescue sooner. She quietly walked up behind him and wrapped her arms around him, burring her face in his back for a moment before speaking.
“Huang Shang… Huang Shang…” She whispers, though it was probably loud enough that if anyone was around them, she would definitely get in trouble. Coming around to look at him, she smiled, “What is my dragon doing out here all alone?”
Resting a hand on his chest, she smiled again with a slight laugh, “Did my dragon hear my guzheng playing? I call it “Get Me Out of Here”…”
❛❛ You’re going to get me in a lot of trouble if you keep at that, ❜❜ he whispers, sidestepping within her arms to face her fully. It is not a reprimand, not really—although he would face serious accusations is someone overheard, he is more so amused by her audacity. He lowers himself a bit, just enough for his forehead to touch hers.
It has been a very, very long day for both of them. It is not as though Jia Chong dislikes meeting with other officials, but it is certainly exhausting after a time. Still, he dares to smile, meeting her mischievous mood with his own good humor. ❛❛ It’s hardly been half the day. Surely, you know that these types of meetings will happen more often once we are married. What will you do then? I cannot rescue you from each one. ❜❜
He raises his hand and tucks a stand of hair behind her ear. ❛❛ But, to answer your question, I came to find you, to see how you are faring. After all, politics do not end at the palace gates. ❜❜ Aside from his own close confidants, he does not trust many within the court, much less the eager invitations from their wives to meet Avery so soon. ❛❛ For their sake, I hope they are on their best behavior. ❜❜

As she leans against him, he wraps his arm around her waist. Her question sounds a bit too honest to him, and it causes him to glance away for a moment. What would she need to be concerned about? There are many, many things that he can think of. ❛❛ Well, going to battle is certainly one, ❜❜ he says. ❛❛ But even when I am here in Luoyang, I have a lot of enemies. By extension, they will not like you, either, to the point that your safety could be jeopardized.❜❜
He glances back down at her face, searching for something in her expression. ❛❛ There are those who despise the Sima clan, too. There are many eyes watching us, so we must be ready for whatever that may bring. ❜❜
Perhaps none of these are things that Avery is concerned about, but they are certainly Jia Chong’s. Still, he watches for the slightest change in her face, seeing if maybe she is scared, too, even if she has not yet said it aloud.
❛❛ Those meatbuns are certainly effective. ❜❜ He cannot help but smile a bit at that, thinking to when Sima Zhao married Yuanji. ❛❛ It has certainly worked for more than one Sima woman. As for events… there will probably be congratulatory banquets. If there are any successes at either the northern or southern fronts, those will be celebrated, too. There will be more than you may think. ❜❜

He looks down at their hands, squeezing his fingers around her palm. She is right—there are other things that he will need to do that day, responsibilities that he cannot brush aside. For perhaps the first time, he wishes that he had just a little bit of Zhao’s noncommittal bearing—just enough for him to say ❛ Damn it all ❜ and stay, but he does not. Cannot.
❛❛ Very well. You will be closely attended to while I am gone, ❜❜ he promises. Before he stands to leave, he kisses her brow, and places a warmer blanket over her lap to keep her warm. ❛❛ I’ll be back soon. ❜❜
______________________________________________________________
When he does return, the sun is starting to set. Attendants are out in the courtyard, lighting the lanterns; he enters the main corridor without ceremony, tossing his cloak on the nearest luohan bed. He glances around, looking for where she might be.

She is so pleased with the gift that he finds himself smiling, too. Her praise, her kisses, and her embraces are more than enough in exchange for the ring.
He wraps his arms around her waist, looking at the way the metal and gemstones glitter in the light. It suits her.
❛❛ As selfish as you’ve become, just have a little more patience, ❜❜ he jokes, lowering his lips down onto hers. His kiss is soft, undemanding; when he lifts up again, his eyes are downcast, looking at the curve of her mouth. ❛❛ It is just the banquet left. Then, we will have our time to do what we please. I will be completely yours before long. ❜❜
He cannot remember a time when he was so happy. Moments like these are few and far between, but he holds onto that feeling, thinking that, once the wars are over, perhaps they can spend more time like this.
When he speaks again, his voice is quieter, more serious. ❛❛ I promised you that I will make you happy. Our days have just begun; know that I will keep you happy like this, no matter what it takes. ❜❜
He bends down to kiss her again, more fervently this time.
❛❛ Let us go to the banquet, ❜❜ he says. ❛❛ We can continue this when the ceremonies are over. ❜❜

Yueliang nods, nuzzling against the covers. “I’ve been awake since you kissed me.” She opens her eyes and that dazed expression of hers makes her look all the more endearing.
Finally, she sits up. Color came back to her face and she’s looking more her usual self. She attempts to fix her disheveled hair and ended up tucking them behind her ears.
“I haven’t slept like that in years. I can’t put my finger on it but I feel well-rested. Having you hold me made me feel relaxed.”
Then she smiles at him with a hint of sadness in her eyes. “I was a bit scared that I’ll wake up and it was all a dream but it wasn’t.” The dancer hugs her knees closer to her chest and her smile brightens. “I’m happy that this is my reality now.”
At such a face, he sits back down beside her on the bed. ❛❛ Rest easy, ❜❜ he says, placing his hand upon her cheek. ❛❛ I am here. I always will be. ❜❜
Still, he is relieved that she seems to be doing much better. Although the poison had a strong effect, the medicines and rest have already made such a difference—all at once, he feels more at ease.
❛❛ I sent the attendants to make you breakfast, ❜❜ he says, lifting his hand from her face to comb her disheveled hair with his fingers. ❛❛ Are you hungry? Perhaps the poison has affected your appetite, but you must eat well to regain your strength. ❜❜

His bride stifles a laugh and gently nudges him. “It wasn’t our fault that we met a bit later. Your mom is just happy to see you not alone anymore. I heard that you worried her so much when you were still a bachelor.”
Yueliang presents Lady Liu the tea and sure enough, her mother-in-law was excited to welcome her into the family. When Jia Chong was away, she took the time to visit her and get to know him a bit more about his family. Thanks to this, the two have formed a friendly bond with each other.
It was their turn to drink the tea and linking their arms together made her flush with excitement. Throughout the whole day, her heart has been beating fast as if she had been running. As they pulled back, she wiped his moist lips with her sleeves.
“You look dashing today, husband. Seeing you out of military outfits makes my heart flutter. It has a different charm~.”
He smiles at her compliment, knowing that he cannot deny that his appearance is drastically different on this day—red is not a color he sports often. ❛❛ These colors suit you best. Bright and lively, ❜❜ he says, taking her hand. ❛❛ Like a flower in bloom. ❜❜
The final tradition is to hold a feast in honor of the married couple, but before he walks her to the banquet hall, he keeps her there for a moment longer, even as the attendees move on to the next room.
❛❛ You told me once that you wanted to wear my ring on your finger, ❜❜ he says, pulling a small jewelry pouch out from the folds in his hanfu. In it is a ring for her, made of turquoise—the same as the amulet he wears around his neck each day. ❛❛ You said it would make you feel connected to me. I want to bestow this to you now, to bind us even further. ❜❜

She notices that he tenses at her kiss and notices how his fingers touch the spot, at first she wondered if she did something wrong but when she notices him relaxing and hears the tone in his voice a small smile graces her lips.
“Well… Thank you… They’re beautiful.” Her smile widens as she holds the earrings close to her, “No, don’t return them! You chose them for me and that is special… at least it is to me.”
She wasn’t sure if she had the clothes to go with them - at least, not anymore. After her parents’ death she had lost most of her nice clothes and wore things that were similar to what the servants wore. Besides, she was working for Chong, she wouldn’t need anything too nice - not at the moment anyway.
“I think I should be fine in a few days…” She says, downplaying her injuring at his question, “I am sore, but moving couldn’t have hurt… I didn’t move that much.”
She yawns slightly again, but her eyes stay fixed on Chong, “I’m more worried about you, you look so tired - have you slept at all?”
He watches her for a moment, skeptical. He knows that her injury is more serious than that, but he does not want to argue.
❛❛ Not much, ❜❜ he answers honestly. He knows that he must look disheveled, and he can feel the heaviness underneath his eyes. With all that has happened at the market—or, rather, what has happened between them during their time together—has his mind restless. Even if he wanted to sleep, he does not think he can.
Still, he does not want her to dwell on it for too long. He smiles a bit, joking, ❛❛ Someone had to watch over you. I don’t suppose your brother would forgive me if I tended to you halfheartedly, especially after something like this has happened while you were under my charge. ❜❜
thewardenqueen
“Hopefully my knowledge of the Lienü Zhuan will come in handy then, especially when speaking to your mother and to the other wives,” She says, more thinking out loud to herself really. She then looks at Chong with a smile, “I finally get to see what events you go to? That should be interesting. I would like to see why you always come home groaning and rubbing your head.”
Her teasing was light as she poked his side gently, “Perhaps I can take some of that burden from you now, though I think you’re forgetting my appearance in and of itself has made tongues wag. It will make the games more fun I suppose.”
Noticing how his lips quirked into a small smile, she couldn’t help but mimic him, “Oh, Sima Yi will be unhappy with you. You had to choose the most opinionated, stubborn, western woman to marry didn’t you? Though perhaps Shi’s and Zhao’s favor for you, and Zhao’s favor for me will help you through his anger.”
He chuckles a bit at that. ❛❛ Yes, I did choose the most opinionated, stubborn, western woman to marry, ❜❜ he says, placing his hand on top of hers. ❛❛ But you are much more than that. As you have said, you have charmed both of his sons and their advisor. You need not worry about his opinion of you. ❜❜
He leans in a bit closer, dropping his voice so that only she can hear. ❛❛ However, if you are looking to change his opinion of you, then look to the Sima’s matriarch. Zhang Chunhua is the only one who can sway him so easily. ❜❜
Still, Jia Chong is hardly concerned about it—what worries him most is the political games and intrigue, but as long as they are together, he can protect her from that.
❛❛ If that is all, then it sounds like Sima Yi’s opinion is what concerns you most about marrying me, ❜❜ he jokes. ❛❛ How amusing. Of all the things I thought you would say, that is one that I did not think of. ❜❜
"Fine, if you insist on recognition..." She smiles and leans forward to kiss him, "I will have to find other Roman puzzles for you to try... then you could be the only man in the Han to best them."
❛❛ All right, ❜❜ he says, dipping his face closer to hers. ❛❛ I will accept that challenge. But, I do expect a reward for each one that is bested—you should prepare for that, too. ❜❜

“When it comes to you, I will always be jealous,” She laughs softly, though in reality she would be extremely jealous if he were to take someone else. Though, she believes him when he says he won’t.
She smiles sweetly as he kisses her knuckles, “I think I’m very fortunate, truly,” She moves closer to kiss his cheek,“I’m certain I can easily answer your mother’s questions, she doesn’t scare me… yet.”
“But what of my responsibilities?” She asks as she plays with a few strands of his hair as he props his head in his hand, “I am used to being in charge of the household as someone who works for you… Don’t I have new responsibilities?”
She knows she has had more ‘wifely’ duties since they became an item, but she knows they stopped at certain points, “I know I’ve been to a few events with you, but do I go to more now? How am I expected to dress and act for those?”
Then another question came to her mind, “Have you told Sima Yi yet? I know he’s not the most fond of me…”
❛❛ There are certain things, yes, ❜❜ he says. She has already begun to step into a few of those already, so the two roles have already blurred together. He takes a moment to think of how to best describe the changes, as subtle as they are. ❛❛ You will continue to manage the household, but at a different level of administration. Rather than tending to most things yourself, you will be overseeing more attendants to perform the tasks you used to do. Things like cooking, cleaning, and making clothes will be taken care of by others; it is your role to supervise them, and to provide necessary funds or materials as they need. It is a managerial role, really. ❜❜
❛❛ In addition to that, you will be more social. Attending events with me, sure, but you will also have outings with the wives and daughters of other officers and officials. It is a matter of networking, ❜❜ he explains, sipping at his tea. It has cooled a bit now that they have been talking for a long while, but it is still fragrant.
❛❛ It is better to be discreet in such instances. Exchange courtesies and pleasantries, but talk little; the same with attire. Dressing too exuberantly or too modestly will make tongues wag. Playing palace games is all about avoiding the limelight, if you can. If you can’t, then you will need to be ready for that. ❜❜
At the mention of Sima Yi, his lips quirk into a small smile. ❛❛ And no, I did not yet make this public. He will find out soon enough—especially after Zhao hears of it. ❜❜

She held onto his arm, moving closer and leaning her body slightly against him. “You spoil me too much. People might think that you’re weak to your wife, my future husband.”
And so they walked beside each other, bowed and gave their respects to the altar, to their parents, then to each other.
Finally, it was time to lift the red veil covering her face. Her face would be revealed to him for the first time as his wife. The moment the troublesome cloth was out of the way, her eyes lifted up to see him.
If this was indeed a dream, she has no wish of waking up. Yueliang could see a faint smile on his lips, his relaxed expression, and those eyes that always made her feel exposed to him.
“Gonglu…”, she haltingly called out. Was it alright to call him with this name? Not Sir Jia Chong but his name that was only for family members to use.
“I’ll take care of you from now on so please always stay by my side.” Her eyes glistened and a small tear ran down her cheeks. Filled with joy, she quickly wiped it and stepped closer.
“Aren’t you going to kiss me?”
As she steps closer, he takes one, too. The way she says his stylized name rings in his head; he likes the sound of it when it comes from her lips.
His eyes drop down, and he leans forward to capture her lips. Soft, undemanding, but eager. This is a day that he has waited a very long time for, and he intends to enjoy every moment of it.
❛❛ You are very precious to me, ❜❜ he says, placing his hand upon her cheek. ❛❛ I intend to make you happy, even it means spoiling you. ❜❜
The next ceremony is for tea to be served to his mother—if Lady Liu accepts the tea, then she also accepts Yueliang to be her daughter-in-law. Then Yueliang and Jia Chong will drink their own cups of tea, their arms intertwined, which binds them in matrimony; afterward, the feast will begin.
A servant comes with the cup of tea for his mother. In a few days, it will be Jia Chong’s turn to serve tea to Yueliang’s mentor, but for now, this cup is for Yueliang to present.
At the sight of it, Jia Chong leans down, his lips above her ear. ❛❛ My mother has been waiting a long time now for me to present my bride to her, ❜❜ he says, his mouth curved in a mischievous smile. ❛❛ She is so eager that if we keep her waiting any longer, she may come here and snatch the tea herself to drink, even if you don’t serve it to her. ❜❜
perfumednightingale
“No!” Yueliang was quick to look up at him, her hands grasping onto his clothes. “Please don’t go. I’ll sleep I pro-” Her eyes narrowed slightly when she realized she had fallen for his trick.
“Lord Jia Chong is a mean person. How can you tease your sick lover? As punishment, have this.” She cupped his face, moving closer as if to kiss him on the lips only to rub her nose against his.
Satisfied, she settled beside him and closed her eyes. “Since my beloved will leave the room if I don’t sleep, I’m off to dreamland~.”
As she nestles into him, he winds his arm around her tighter. She falls asleep first, and he lays there, listening to her soft breaths, but also listens for the sound of his men returning—but they do not come.
That night, he does not sleep much, and when he does, it is a light, fitful sleep. It is dawn when he gives up on resting, and outside the sky lightens to a soft, dusty pink.
He does not know when she will wake, but he is sure that when she does, she will be hungry—her body will need the energy to recover. So, he plants a small kiss upon her brow and slides himself from underneath her. He goes to grab an attendant and instructs them to prepare a bountiful breakfast.
It only takes a few moments before he is back to her side. He thinks he sees her eyes flutter—in a voice hardly above a whisper, he asks, ❛❛ Are you awake? ❜❜
Avery wasn't sure what she was expecting, chuckling slightly at the sight of a mighty strategist trying to figure out a belt. Once he finally figured it out, she was surprised, but smiled at Chong, "Look at you, you did it. Perhaps the great strategist wasn't out done by a belt after all." She tilted her head at his question of a reward, "Who said this deserved a reward? All the men in the Roman empire know how to use one," She teased before kissing his cheek, "I think you'll have to work harder
❛❛ Those are the men of the Roman Empire, ❜❜ he says in that same, mocking tone of palace officials. ❛❛ What about the men of the Han? How many do you think are able to accomplish such a feat? Perhaps I was the first. I do insist upon some sort of recognition for what was accomplished today. ❜❜
This whole conversation has grown to be so foolish, but Jia Chong enjoys the playful banter. ❛❛ However, if you are not moved, then tell me what obstacle I should try to overcome next. I will do whatever you bid. ❜❜
Some more photomode shots I had lying around!
