Lily laughed drunkenly at the startled look on his face. “Not a deranged badger, though I have been called worse.” She giggled, grinning back at him as she leaned into his grip on her arm. “I would make your life a living hell of course.” She said, smiling sweetly at him and tapping her index finger to his nose. She knew that James wouldn’t throw her under the bus like that. The Potter siblings may fight like cats and dogs some days but they always had each others back.
“I would never say no to ice cream.” She said, linking her arm in his as they made their way to the kitchen, Lily stumbling slightly along the way. “Alright and are options are, rocky road, chocolate chocolate chocolate, pumpkin juice or, oh Merlin, who in their right mind bought plain vanilla?” She said, scrunching up her nose at the painfully boring flavor. She settled on rocky road, taking out a spoon and eating it straight from the carton.
“So Brother Dearest,” She said, through a mouthful of delicious ice cream. “Do the parents know that you’re up past your bedtime?” She asked, giggling at her own joke.
Jamie heaved an exaggerated sigh and followed Lily’s slightly crooked lead into the kitchen. He leaned against the counter, watching her sort through the freezer. “I happen to like vanilla, thank you very much,” he said faux-petulantly, waiting for her to get out of the way so that he could open the fridge. “After all, nothing else would go quite as well with the first strawberries of the summer,” he said, producing the aforementioned fruit with a flourish. He set a knife chopping the berries with a charm, then scooped the ice cream into a bowl from the cupboard. After dumping the berries in, he settled into a cross-legged seat on the counter.
Jamie cocked his head to one side in response to her question. Her words echoed his thoughts earlier–whether his parents knew just how many nights he spent awake. “You know, my most favorite baby sister, I honestly don’t know.” He sighed–again–and leaned backwards against the wall. He could tell that he was veering into philosophical territory, which was a bit more than he was in the mood for and far more than Lily could handle at this point. Changing gears, he smiled down at her. “But I do know for a fact that they knew you weren’t home when they went to bed, so we’ll see what they say in the morning.”
