tips for sourcing media online!
after seeing the hbomberguy video i'm sure lots of people have become at least slightly aware to the fact that most of the media you consume can lack a source, or outright be plagiarised. i'm a big fan of sourcing media (not just due to my love of finding lost things...) but also due to respect of the creator. here's part one of hal's top tips for sourcing and crediting media!
number one, finding the source! for this example, i'm going to use pinterest as an example. here, i've searched "2000s anime" which is a hell-hole of stolen & uncredited media, as most of the people who post this kind of stuff only care for the style... whatever >_>)
now, this was admittedly a bad example, because i already recognised where it was from, but if you don't the best thing to do is right click on the image in a new tab (use google reverse image search for those on a phone/tablet)
now, to the right there's a very similar image. because of how close this is, we can gather that the original is a CG from a visual novel (visual novels usually have sprites that can be used interchangeably) and so from that you can do a very simple "hatsune miku visual novel" google search. if nothing appears, searching the same thing in japanese may ward better answers, so always try that too! ^_^ VNDB is a great source for visual novels and such, which lead me to direct answer of the image source, a game called "未来の歌と、つながるヒトミ" a doujin made visual novel made in 2009! and due to that discovery, i was able to find the original image, ripped straight from the game on spriter's resource!
so not only did i find the source behind this image, i found more, and i learned a bit about this doujin game on the way! i hope you can see the joys in sourcing too! (TL:DR; stop posting random anime girls and tagging it #animecore you dweeb. learn some basic image searching skills please)
