3. What are the working and living conditions of the people who produce the product. Are there child laborers involved ?
Most of the children laboring on cocoa farms are between the ages of 12 and 16 but the youngest reportedly is 5 years old. 40% of the children are girls and only stay for a few months compared to the others. The work days begin at 6 am and ends in the evening. Their big machete knives violates international labor laws. They cut bean pods from the trees then pack them into sacks and that weigh over 100 pounds when they are full and drag them across the forest. On average, cocoa farmers earn less than $2 a day. Due to that they employ children so keep prices competitive.

I went to the nearest 7 eleven which was the one on John Hopkins campus at that time.

The owner makes about me 9.19 percent of the profit and that’s only from Hershey’s.
8. Are there hidden cost in the amount you paid ?
Yes, of course I was paying for the place I got it from covering some type of delivery fee. But, I’m sure a few cent out of what I paid went toward the actual people that helped produce each ingredient and make the chocolate bar.
