before we start posting that july is gay wrath month let’s consider that july is disability pride month first and foremost. the “be gay do crimes” memes can wait

before this post breaches containment and people start going “why not both hehehe” i want you to seriously consider the very long history of disabled people’s existence being pushed aside and/or seen as secondary. i promise you it’s not going to hurt to hold onto the memes and give disabled people space for visibility and celebration.

i say this as a disabled trans person whose trans identity is made front-and-center to the (mainly cis) people who know i’m trans but my identity as a disabled person is brushed off by the very same people.

Honestly, yeah, I feel that a lot of people easily brush off disabilities because at the end of the day, it's traditionally associated with uglier things and has not had as forefront a movement as LGBTQ+ pride.

I also think this lends itself to a pattern I feel everyone has noticed before; namely, that a lot of people who belong to one set of oppressed people also believe themselves exempt from perpetrating anything as the oppressor themselves.

This I feel may be especially true for- not to divert from the original point of OP in any way- individuals such as white gay people. For example, those classmates of mine, even though generally well-intentioned, have crossed certain boundaries because they think that just because they're in one minority that means they can sort of get away with a lot and ignore other issues. I think that's part of the reason why so many people during disabilities pride month have still tried brute-forcing their way through issues disabled people face in the name of mentioning "be gay do crimes" again, to which it's good that they're so open, but almost selfish that it sometimes completely eclipses certain people who want to be seen.

Anyway, that's my take on it.
