this whole thing has me confused and angry. it's so fucked up, from every angle. if there's any silver lining, it's that when i saw the headline that he left, i was afraid it was gonna be for something much worse.

based on what appears to have happened, im 100% on gunil's side. my wish for him is that he finds some kind of relief out of the public eye. and can spend time with his family and friends, go through it, and someday make music that doesn't have to be so fucking sanitized

gunil being forced out is just....shocking. there was so little time between that person's leaked recording (OF A PRIVATE CONVERSATION? WHO THE FUCK?? DOES THAT????) and the company's announcement. they just severed him. now i assume they think they're on damage control.

it's such a brutal way of dealing with conflict. the kpop industry has once again proven that the loudest, most annoying and twisted fans have their hands on the company's throats by controlling the perception of public opinion.

if gunil was actually fed up enough to want to leave, fine. but there has GOT to be a more humane way of handling problems than cutting people out immediately. this is toxic industry culture that seems to be getting worse instead of better. the company is so deathly afraid of image problems.

their artists have a right to be upset when upsetting things happen, many of which ARE caused by fans! but if artists speak up, the hammer comes down on them for voicing dissatisfaction, never on fans for being terrible. because the REAL problem is that fans are not punishable, and they are the ones paying the money, so ultimately JYP works for them. the power structure is an inverted pyramid.

to actually solve this overall problem, i think 2 things need to happen:

companies must have less direct control over artists/groups.

fans must have less cultural power over artists.

this should have gone completely differently: controversy arises, the group discusses within themselves then escalates to the company with a decision, they negotiate, and then they communicate to fans.

the way it actually went (fan pressure -> company action -> group silence/damage) illustrates the present power structure and its dangerous witch-hunting impact. artists are even less likely to try to speak out against something in the future because of stuff like this. every time it goes this way, the system protects the abusive, extractive dynamic between artists, companies, and fans.

as fans, we can't do much about point 1. is there anything we can do about point 2? crowdsourcing opinions...

genuinely so pissed about gunil leaving. i don’t think saying i hate my fans privately is in any way a problem. i’ve been fans of bands who say that openly and it’s just like “well that’s how they are”. two groups i like recently got into a public fight online and that’s just kinda how music is. i think it was perfectly fair and mature to vent that privately and it doesn’t seem to have impacted how he actually interacted with fans at all. i went to their concert in may and i’m so sad that that’s the only time i’ll get to see ot6 live. i hope he gets to have a fulfilling music career in whatever way suits him in future.

i honestly think gunil would’ve been better off with a hiatus and apology.. kicking him out was crazy. jype lost a diamond, that man studied music at one of the best colleges. i wish gunil success in the future though🤍

i'm gonna burn jype DOWN. they failed to protect their own artist (no one is surprised), and instead of supporting him when he got caught up in a scandal (which wouldn't even happen if they actually cared abt their artists' safety), they decided to kick him out. fuck this industry seriously

i’m absolutely infuriated about gunil. i can’t believe jype wouldn’t make a statement trying to explain what happened; they just kick him out???? and it’s INSANE to me that fans care SO much about him complaining about saesangs and everything. what idol ISNT complaining about their fans????

and what is a BAND going to do without a drummer and their LEADER????? i desperately hope the rest of the boys leave jype and they all regroup to form their own indie band. they don’t deserve any of this and im in absolute SHOCK that it even came to this point.

genuinely going through the five stages of grief right now i’m so fucking mad. i will get more writing out soon but this just doesn’t feel real.
