I wanted to draw ciel in his emo slut era -- or well, not era, but rather the emo yearning aspect of ciel which i dont usually depict at all

even though I'm not fully satisfied with the technical execution, there's a lot of merit in the meaning I've embedded in the art through the artistic choices

I definitely debated whether i would actually draw ciel in something this revealing but i think it reflects this aspect of his personhood very well… the yearningest part of ciel is both vulnerable and slutty and half-obscured in shadow--the ribbon tied around his neck is both sensual and a bit suffocating, the open jacket baring his chest at first glance, raises the ambiguity of whether the flowers are blooming directly out of him or simply clasped there. either way, the illusion is there ⠀

the placement of a petal by his mouth in addition to the flowers from his chest, conveys a callback to the hanahaki trope without being one to one. the feeling itself bears striking resemblance, but is not the same as unrequited love. ⠀

for his expression, the parted lips give the impression of being just about to say something, struggling to breathe or to hold that emotion back for his eyes, it's so darkly obscured by his hair and shadow that it's hard to tell if in addition to being weary, he may just be close to crying and with the lighting itself, it's harsh, as ciel's feelings to himself feel 'impossible to hide (from)', like a searchlight beamed directly in your eyes, where it's irrevocable that you're caught and simultaneously, as before, this is a very obscured part of him, even to himself, hence the drowning shadow where the other half remains completely unknown. ⠀

and then, of course, the flowers themselves representing admiration, desire, and complicated passion. I'm especially happy with how the flowers turned out; they feel lurid and a bit like gore.

i'm fond of this art as a contrast to the regular art language I use for ciel's character--it's a completely different vocabulary (and incidentally one that makes dr's aesthetic make more sense by extent). Yearning twink is not the same as the twink presented to the world in the usual cream and white and aspirational blue-grey

For this art in particular, when I envisioned this portrait in terms of choosing a flower and what I wanted to portray, I was specifically thinking about ciel's messy feelings for zhou ren in the time before he’s able of confessing to him, or even accepting for himself, the desire to be close and the desire to have him as a person in his life.

Unfortunately, as a non-vietnamese speaker, I can only go off english translations of the lyrics. While I wouldn't say the lyrics themselves speak to the themes in the art, the art first visualized itself to me while I was marinating on the atmosphere of this song. Enjoy :D

i think i'm primarily forming the opinion that it'll help to think about situations like this from the perspective of "the choice is mine" vs "there is something other people expect of me". it takes the guesswork out and lets you spend your time and energy where it matters to you.
