I really believe that LOAD was a turning point in Metallica and especially Hetfields own reflection and how he writes lyrics. The black album had personal themes but were very direct, load faces a more storytelling theme.

The black album had a theme without intentionally having one, load has a theme of storytelling and experimentation. This was ment to be their official break off of concept albums, however the amount of songs both in load and reload broadens the amount of weakness of theme. No song is like the unforgiven, with a clear issue and no song is fully conceptual.
