Final Major Project Evaluation

“G” by d’Arte Magazine is a publication I am proud to present as my final major project. Although it did, in no way, go to plan, it still managed to provide a successful commentary on the issues of gender, sex, sexuality and youth. Throughout my time working on this project I learned a variety of skills I was previously unfamiliar with, such as gif making, QR code publishing, face tracking filter design, advanced camera and lighting work, photo editing and working with InDesign, amongst others. The goal of this project was to demonstrate my growth as a creative during my time in this foundation degree and I think this publication does that perfectly. Although the final product is not what I initially expected, it shows my ability to adapt and develop ideas.

The small reflections and evaluations made throughout my process provide a more in depth view of my work, creative process and critical thinking, but overall I am happy with what I have done with the time and resources I had.

Although my publication is not very big, it is filled with personality, so I wanted to make a contents page that reflected that. I played with the word “contents” and created a dynamic shape that frames the easily legible contents of the magazine.

Who’s Coming Out? | Final

Although I usually find it garish to make anything and everything gay cluttered with neon rainbows, I believe it is a symbol iconic enough to make it into this publication. I decided to dedicate a page to the queer artists who have inspired me throughout the years, specially the ones who have come out recently. This page is simple, yet effective, due to it’s strong colors and beautiful personalities, it does just what it was meant to do. It sparks joy.

Lesbians Hit Back | Final

Lesbians are either sexualized or looked down upon by the majority of the straight community. So much that there have been countless incidents where lesbians couples have refused to kiss for male passerby and gotten violently beaten up because of it. Being a queer woman, I really wanted to make sure I saved a page of this publication to dedicate it to all the strong gay women who have had to deal with this sort of harassment.

Sex... But Make It Classy | Final

The photo essay “Sex... But Make It Classy” holds a very dear place in my heart and my only regret is that I did not have time to make more pages of it. Sex positivity is a topic I am hugely drawn to, and so is history of art, but the two rarely intersect due to the strict rules that classical painters were had to follow. However, pornography and erotica has, and always will be an essential part of human media, so it baffles me to go into so many museums without a single trace of artistic erotica being found.

In this photo essay I wanted to bring attention to the lack of sexual education we receive as young people, as well as how it is still a generally taboo topic that the classical arts do not embrace. By drawing on top of these well known paintings I decided to make them more approachable to a younger audience interested in sex. I think this work was not only extremely fun, but also very aesthetically successful. It is probably one of my favorite parts within the whole magazine.

Fuck TERFS | Final

Although I previously posted a different version of this page, when I looked at my magazine all together I really disliked how it looked, so I decided to take on a more direct approach.

Instead of talking about the problem surrounding TERFS in the lgbt community in a playful way, I decided it would be best to interrupt the magazine’s artistic aesthetic and write the reader a personal letter. I am happy with the informative and positive message this piece ended up delivering and am glad I took the time to make it again.

Winter Cover Filter | Process

These were the two designs I experimented with in SparkAR to make my filter inspired by my winter cover. I wanted to take minerals and make them look like they were part of the human face. Although it is difficult to picture it here, in the video I’ll post next you’ll be able to see the final result.
