Q. What is your earliest memory?
“Hm, that’s a hard one, but my father was a doctor and my mother a homestay mom, so she was always complaining about my father’s absence and saying that he didn’t care about the family, so when I was in elementary school they started to force us to have the family saturday, can you believe it? Initially it was very boring, my two brothers and I hated it. But over time the family games that ended in a fight, the nights singing and playing the guitar in the fireplace, my father playing football with us, became something special and it’s a good memory. I feel happy when i revisit those memories.”
Q. What bad habit are you struggling to overcome?
“I’ve been trying to stop smoking. I started back in high school in parties, it was “fun” and all my friends were doing it. Stupid boy I was… I met my wife at that time and since I started she tells me to stop. When we got married and moved to San Francisco, I told her that I stopped, but actually I continued to smoke at work and outside of the house. She eventually found out, I’m not that good at hiding, you know? After she died, when I decided to comeback home I made a promise to her that I would really stop in the place I started, i don’t even know if that makes sense, but i’m trying.“
Q. What keeps you up at night?
"The best moment to write is late night, don’t you think? It’s calm, quiet, you can focus, the ideas come easily. When I started writing in High School it was terrible in my parents house. I am the older brother, which means my younger brothers were always screaming, messing around and trying to annoy me, so I could play with them. So became a habit to write at night, it was the only calm moment at the house, but it was terrible to wake up to school in the next thay. But nowadays usually I am up at night working on my novel. Just grab my computer, my wine glass and write the night away.”
Q. Have you ever climbed the water tower?
“Are you kidding? Heck yeah. Back in high school I used to play football, it was what made my father proud of me, it was our connection since that weekends that mom made us play together, and I was good at it, I need to say. Every friday after the games we used to climb up there, i almost fell a ton of times, I was really clumsy, but it was part of the adventure. It was good to share a few beers with the team, celebrate our victories, cry over our losses, but the best part was being able to watch the whole town from the top, it was a good view.”
Q. Who do you really think is the one loosening the cheese shakers at The Cuttery?
“This literally can be everyone in this town. Come on, who doesn’t want a little bit of extra cheese? And these cheese shakers are terrible, they sould change for bigger ones. I used to go there with my wife when we dated and we always did that.”
Q. Do you live to tell the tale of competing or even beating the wing challenge from Bootlegger’s?
“I certainly live to tell the story. Friends challenged me to try and I was never one to refuse challenges, but I confess that I should have refused this one. I tried the competition and without a doubt I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. It seems a lot easier than it really is, I thought I was going to die of being sick afterwards. And clearly I lost. I’m a bad loser, by the way.”
