Ethical exotic bird breeder + Rescue Surviving isn’t thriving Anti-clipping

Welcome to my Tublr! I’m an ethical hobby exotic bird keeper/breeder and I also do rescue/foster.

I currently own 13 species of bird (listed at the bottom of this post), a ball python, an African house snake, 2 leopard geckos, a veiled chameleon, and several species of fish as well. I mainly specialize in breeding King quail but am experienced in breeding a few of my other species as well.

The bird species I own are King quail - Budgerigar, Bourkes, & Cockatiel parrots - Diamond & Barbary doves + 4 breeds of domestic Pigeon - Canaries, Gouldian, Orange-cheeked waxbill, Society, Bronze winged Mannakin, & Zebra finches.

This is my new cockatiel Mateo. Mateo is shaped like a penguin. Mateo does not know how to make cockatiel noises, the only 2 sounds he makes is the panting of a chihuahua and a little click like you do at dogs to get them to come over. Mateo is quite possibly the weirdest and easiest cockatiel ever (sadly). Hopefully my other 3 can teach him how to do bird things instead of dog things.

SPRING PSA FOR BABY BIRDS

If you find a baby bird DO NOT GIVE IT FOOD OR WATER. Most baby birds you’ll find are FLEDGLINGS, it is normal for them to be unattended, or unable to fly, or even to beg from you because as babies they don’t always understand you’re a threat.

IF you think it may need help, contact a rehabber even if they’re not nearby to direct you on what to do. Chicks out early can be put back or put in a DIY nest as close as possible to their found location but off the ground.

Even if it does need help do NOT raise it yourself. It will suffer from malnutrition, imprinting on humans, and cannot learn basic survival skills from humans (teaching it to eat is not teaching it to find ALL of its natural food sources). If you raise it, it will suffer a slow death when released and keeping a native bird is very very illegal not to mention unethical for a large number of reasons.

While the message is good (people often think/are led to believe they need to let their pets breed to “experience parenthood”) it is not at ALL correct to say they don’t need a Boyfriend/Girlfriend. Opposite sex pairs are not the problem. The problem is a lack of proper research/educative content because parrots (or any pet bird) do NOT need a nest to be happy and 99% of the time a female bird will only lay eggs in the first place BECAUSE a nest like thing was provided which then triggers nesting behavior, further heightened by improper diet or enrichment which would control/distract the birds hormonal behaviors.

If your bird has a nest or anything remotely similar, remove it. They laid eggs? Replace them with fakes which you can easily order online or freeze them and give it back until the hormones break and she stops sitting.

I have 8 budgies and have owned many others over the years as rescues etc, and even my PROVEN pair who were bred by an experienced keeper in the previous home do not lay eggs. Please promote PROPER EDUCATION on the subject rather than shaming keeping F/M pairs or flocks.

Proper setup for small Parrots

Flight cages should measure 20 inches deep, 30 wide, and minimum 30 tall ideally. Various natural perches, dowels if used should only be in the bottom of the cage. Natural shredding toys, no bells unless specifically safe tube bells, no fabric, avoid plastics.

Foraging boxes are a form of enrichment that can keep ground foraging birds entertained for HOURS on end!

Simply take a suitable sized box or flat tote, fill with shredded paper, dried grasses such as timothy hay, and or a dust free safe bedding (NOT pine!!) then scatter various little natural toy pieces such as balsa or sola, wicker balls, etc. The finishing touch is adding a sprinkle of pellets, seed mix, or other treat for them to dig around for.

Introducing my female Veiled chameleon! She doesn’t have a name yet 😅

She was originally being kept in an enclosure with a male before the owner learned it was unsafe and responsibly chose to rehome her. She’s quite young, likely only a few months old.
