â Did he get a murderer off who then murdered him to celebrate? â
â A cop and a defense attorney sleeping together? Thatâs highly unusual. â

â So you remembered to turn off your signature, right? â
â I promise you, as soon as they tell me, youâll be the first to know. â
â You won. Go ahead and gloat, you toad. â
â Look, I promise I wonât tell anyone, alright? My lips are sealed! â
â This is a secret. Do you understand me? â
â You do know what they do to witches up there, donât you? âÂ

â Whatâs up? How can I help? â
â Well, weâll just break you down to nothinâ and see what time it is. â
â Speaking of which, Iâm getting hungry. Whatâs for dinner? â
â Why do people like these things? Theyâre just shiny rocks. â
â Weâre gonna talk to a lawyer and get a professional opinion. â
â Looks good! Can barely tell you hulked out in here. â
â I just threw a bunch of popcorn on the floor. It wasnât that hard. â
â All I did was be the only person who believes in you. â
â Somebodyâs tryinâ to kill me, and I need protection. â
â I can smoke as much weed as I want. â
â Itâs this kind of bickering that makes us such an adorable couple. â
â I saw an opening and I had to take it. â
â But this isnât over! I will hunt you to the ends of the earth! â
â What?! But we saw him throw them in the garbage! â
â Nobodyâs ever gonna see that footage; the case was cut and dry. â
â Itâs not like Iâm dying to tell anyone I saw your- â
â Iâm dating my son-of-a-bitch ex-husband; who am I to judge? â
â Iâll let you guys talk! Iâll just close my eyes. â

â That really freaked me out and I just want this to end now. â
â The cheese is amazing. It melts in my mouth. And in my hands! â
â Come on, you can be honest. â
â I want old, expensive books. Iâll send you a list. â
â The tow truck just got here, so thatâll buy us at least an hour. â
â Tow truck?! What the hellâd you do to my car?! â
â What we need in here is an armored personnel carrier. A tank! â
â Well, Iâm gonna go follow up on a lead right now. â
â Woah, no! Whatâre those morons doing in there?! Â â
â Why is everyone just standing around? Get back to work! â
â Whatâd you do? Whatâd you say? â
â I hear you can smuggle in crap from outside. â
â Whatâre you lookinâ at? You got a problem? â
â I like you. You got balls.. â
â I hate to rub it in, detectives, but I told you theyâd find me. â
â Well, he keeps yelling, âDisability for life!â so I think heâs fine. â
â Who hired you? Who do you work for, pizza man?! â
â You look out there and see a problem, I look out there and see an opportunity. â
â What have I become? Was this whole thing even worth it? â
â All because we shut down a foot massage place. â Â Â
â Oh, my God. The City has no mayor now. â Â Â
â Put your magical hands where I can see them! â Â Â
â Did they make their bust? Did they save the precinct? â Â
â I was behind the bar the whole time. â Â Â
â I bet they have some awesome name for it. â Â Â
â Can a paring knife remove a human heart in under a minute? â Â Â
â I think you guys might be our best option at finding this guy again. â Â Â
â You know, a bunch of us are going out drinking tonight. â Â Â
â How did you get over there? Who are they? â Â Â
â Iâve been calling you. Why wonât you answer your phone? â Â Â
â Weâve been onto you for weeks, and we finally got you. â Â Â
â Iâve never seen them before! What is going on? â Â Â
â Weâre on the money trail, and we just found a new lead. Â â Â Â
â Okay, this is bad. This is really bad. â  Â
â Wait⌠What? Did you say âeat peopleâ? Are you a cannibal, [ Name ]? â  Â
â Iâm always gonna be one step ahead of you. â Â
â Iâm so confused. I donât know whatâs happening right now. â

she canât help the quiet laughter that bubbles, though she does try not to be so loud about it. the image of a grown man in revealing dresses + stilettos dances around her mindâs eye, + she canât help finding it amusing. ây-y-you sh-shoul-ld.â her voice transitions from laughter to the knowing tone of a friend whoâd been all but left behind. âiâm sh-sh-sure h-heâd b-b-be ⌠v-very h-h-hap-ppy t-t-to hear from y-y-you. i-i th-think, f-f-from w-what-t i c-c-can t-t-tell ââ she hesitates. donât assume, she tells herself. ây-y-youâd l-like t-t-to h-hear f-from him, t-t-t-too. hm?â
âyes, knowing him, I think heâd be very happy to hear from me. I think heâs probably missing our old unit a lot more than he expected to, in all honesty.â francis smiled, but it was a sad, soft sort of smile - like the memories he was recalling were being rather desperately censored to allow himself only the happy parts. âI - ah. yes, yes, I would like to hear from him. I havenât heard from anyone since weâve been home, really, and Iâm a bit worried.â he took his phone out of his pocket and turned it over in his hands a few times.Â
âyes, I think it would be very nice to hear from corporal klinger again, now that weâre home. and I - I have some pictures, if youâd like to see!â with a slightly more genuine smile, francis opened his folder of pictures from his time overseas and held his phone out to annette. the first one was a picture of a painting of six people, with francis in the middle. âour c.o. painted this - itâs the senior staff. Iâm there in the middle, and thatâs klinger next to me. and margaret on my other side, and then the surgeons behind us.â

People were like candles, in that it was a lot easier to watch one quickly blown out, than it was to watch it flicker as the oxygen was vented out an airlock until there was nothing left and it went out the hard way. Sometimes surviving was just going out the hard way. Maybe thatâs what he was ultimately doing too, just much, much slower.
âNo one really wins a war.â His answer was one heâd used enough that there was a mechanical tilt to it, a grimaced smile as the many boxes labelled âWarâ in the back of his mind rattled ominously. âEven if you actually manage to save the world, thereâs always another one around the corner eventually.â Forever. Sometimes, with longer periods between, but war eventually came to call no matter how long theyâd done without it. Someome somewhere always wanted something they thought was worth it.
âDoesnât mean there werenât heroes.â His tone jack-knifed into something warmer as he smiled, making the conscious decision to try to lift the lead balloon of a conversation just a little off the ground. âYou were. Iâll write a list of why, try me.â
âoh, I wouldnât say I was a hero,â he said softly, looking down at his glass. âthe surgeons - hawkeye, and bj, and major winchester, and colonel potter and the rest - THEY were heroes, and those dustoff pilots who brought the wounded, and the sisters at the orphanage, but not me. I was just a priest in too far over my head to make much of a difference at all.âÂ
it was a conversation heâd had multiple times, and always with the same results: he just didnât believe he was any sort of hero. despite the lives heâd saved, and the morale heâd provided, and the sacrifices heâd made, and the people heâd saved, it just didnât feel like heâd done ENOUGH. there was always MORE he could have done: more lives he could have changed, more useful things he could have done.
âhow do you do it?â when he looked back up at jack, his eyes were teary and a bit desperate. âyou went through all of it, you saw the front lines, and youâre still smiling.â

Itâs really only a club because they all agree to call it that, but itâs got a bar and a jukebox and something BJ called âapple brandyâ that tastes more like moonshine with a little cinnamon in it â it kicks like a mule and burns all the way down like no brandy sheâs ever tried before â and she loves it. All of it.
Especially on nights like this, when itâs been a good day with no patients lost and they can all take a collective breath and the mood in this little bar is one of relieved camaraderie. Klinger and Nurse Kellye are shuffling around near the jukebox, and she can only sit there cooling her heels for an impatient minute before sheâs on her feet, swallowing the rest of her drink in a blur of warmth, and looking for the closest set of olive drab slacks.
âCâmon, padre!â
Not much of an invite, maybe, when sheâs already grabbed his hand to pull him onto the little dance floor, but her grinâs as sunny as they come. âLetâs get a little exercise, huh?â
days that the jukebox was playing were especially dangerous for the chaplain of the 4077th. every other night, he could hide behind the piano, slip in a few ragtime renditions of some hymns, and justify it to himself as some unconventional ministry, but on nights like these, the jukebox took over the music, leaving francisâs hands free for a few too many glasses of whatever pierce and hunnicutt were passing off as high-shelf liquor that week.
and then, of course, there was the dancing! as much as he never really got the chance to join in, he loved to dance, and he couldnât help but laugh at the jealousy on the nearby corpsmenâs faces when lieutenant blake grabbed his hand and pulled him away from the bar.
âitâs an honor, lieutenant!â he spun her around and caught her gracefully, falling into an easy lindy. ânow, are you going to lead, or should I ? I learned both parts in college - it was an all-boys school, you see,â he teased.
owllyeyed¡:
a crooked smile grew on her face. the image of straight-laced + sordid soldiers is jolted by a conflicting image of one of them attempting to seem as maddening as possible â the scenarios could be nothing but ridiculous. âw-w-well â i-i-iâm-m s-s-sure th-the ent-tert-tainmen-nt w-was n-n-niceâŚâ
at the thought of his dear friend, the ridiculous corporal maxwell klinger, francis laughed and rubbed his hand over his eyes, forcing himself to focus on happier memories. âheâd order these dresses - some were quite risquĂŠ, mind you, and this all started before donât ask donât tell was repealed - and heâd wear them around the hospital, and to formations, and on patrols.â he chuckled and dipped his head to hide the way his cheeks turned pink. âI have to admit, he did look very fetching. I think, by the end, he really started to prefer his heels over his combat boots.â a soft grin spread across his features, and his blue eyes lit up with fondness and nostalgia.Â
âI hope heâs well. I should really give him a call.â
@harknesstmâ // âCongratulations. You have survived the war. Now live with the trauma.âÂ
âeveryone at home really seems to think itâs that easy, huh?â francisâs soft voice was slurred and clumsily loud, and his eyes trailed on jackâs lips without any of the flirtatious intent the action may have had earlier in the war. the surgery colonel potter had helped him through had helped him regain his hearing a good bit, definitely, but when he drank, which was more than heâd have cared to admit these days, it (coping and hearing) became difficult all over again.Â
he raised his (second? fifth?) glass to his lips, then set it down quickly and scrunched his forehead, a bit lost in thought. âthey really - they really think the war was like the films, donât they? they think the heroes won and the villains died?â after a beat, his sad blue eyes widened and he looked up at jack. âand they think we were the heroes?â
@harknesstmâ //Â "It's not easy being the disappointment of the family, but someone had to do it, so here the fuck I am."
âwell, I canât imagine anybody being disappointed by you, captain harkness!â was that suggestive? it felt a bit suggestive. âI mean, youâre a captain, for goodnessâs sake! what could the rest of your family possibly be like, if a handsome, polite captain is their most disappointing relative?â he gave his companion a halfway-tipsy grin and took a sip of his whiskey (gin with a little bit of apple juice).Â
âmy sister and I cheated the system a bit, I believe - now, our parents were absolutely set on having grandchildren, and we both knew that wasnât quite what we wanted, so we found a good irish catholic loophole! my sister became a nun, you see, and Iâm a priest, so as much as our parents would like to, they canât get on our cases about not having children, because weâre members of the clergy!âÂ
@zerocharliexrayâ // x
âwell, as long as youâre not lying,â he teased, glancing away and blushing politely at her rather salacious wink. it didnât mean anything, of course, but it was always refreshing to be able to joke-flirt with somebody who wasnât hawkeye. âbut Iâll certainly be praying for you, lieutenant, and any trouble you might find yourself in! heaven knows trouble has a talent for finding us.âÂ
@zerocharliexrayâ //Â âwe work fast and weâre not dainty.â
âthat seems to be the general approach around here to bedside manner!â he laughed as he dried his hands on a towel, inspecting them to ensure heâd washed off all of the blood. the last round of wounded had been fairly quick and entirely fatality-free, leaving the staff of the 4077th in good spirits for once. âyou dustoff pilots, though - youâre all incredible, truly. itâs thanks to you that most of these soldiers even have a chance. we do our best here, but youâre the ones performing the real miracles!â
owllyeyed¡:
@joculariity¡: â i feel like iâm going crazy! â
behind overlarge glazzes, hazel eyes widen. âo-oh â ?â she hesitates. how to phrase this next sentence? the idea is clear in her mind. âw-w-well â c-c-cr-raz-zy p-peop-p-ple d-donât-t us-s-sually th-thin-nk th-theyâr-re c-craz-zy, s-s-so.â
âright,â he said softly. âyouâre probably right.â it was getting harder to reel in his thoughts these days, when they started reaching back toward the more gruesome memories of the war that heâd tried so hard to repress. âI - yâknow, I had a friend, back in the 4077th - he tried everything he could think of to pretend to be crazy, hoping the army would discharge him, or at least reassign him. it never worked - he was there with me until the day our deployment ended.â

hm. francis definitely understood the horrible conundrum of being absolutely exhausted and being afraid to fall asleep - it was, unfortunately, a popular problem among the soldiers he worked with (not to mention his own horrific nightmares). âI understand,â he hummed, crouching down beside her chair with his usual soft, empathetic smile. âis there anything I can do to help? the doctors have some fairly strong sleeping medications, if youâd like.â
