Through self-discipline comes freedom. — Aristotle 6 months of hardcore focus and alignment can put you 5 years ahead of life. Don’t underestimate the power of consistency and desire. I often get asked “I don’t know how do you do it. You work full time and are pursuing your Bachelors Degree. What’s your secret?” For the last 2 years I have been working full time (48 hours) and pursuing my Bachelors degree at Rutgers University taking 6-9 credits (2-3 courses) a semester + summer courses. I have 6 courses left and will graduate with my Bachelors degree in May 2021. Every day, I am so grateful to be able to attend Rutgers University! Envisioning my future and knowing what I want, MOTIVATES me every day to KEEP GOING and pushing through sleepless nights, while also working full time. I failed math in High School in Germany (2010), and my first Fall semester at Rutgers I chose Personal Finance as a free elective course ONLINE (so I had to to teach it to myself). I am so determined and focused to reach my goals! The key to success is to focus on your goals, not obstacles. And success in life comes when you simply REFUSE TO GIVE UP, with goals so strong that obstacles, failure, and loss only act as a motivation. No matter what you want to achieve in life, know that whatever you set your mind to, YOU CAN DO IT! Today, exactly 10 years ago I arrived in the United States. I meant to stay for only a year as an AuPair, but 10 years later I am still here and I have created my life in the states. Every day I am grateful for Skype and being able to video call my parents and brother (otherwise I probably wouldn’t have lasted this long). I am grateful that my parents, my brother and my best friend were able to come visit me, and I am grateful to be able to visit them. I obtained my GED (High School Diploma), my Associates Degree with honors Magna Cum Laude, and am currently pursuing my Bachelors Degree at Rutgers University (I’m graduating May 2021). I’ll be 31 years old. I also got married, and divorced from my abuser. During those 3 years (two years married, one of those years separated; one year of court dates for a restraining order and assault; and PTSD therapy) I wasn’t able to physically see my parents, brother or best friend from Germany. But their love and support was always present, even though they were thousands of miles away. And I am grateful for my support system in the states! 10 lessons I’ve learned living in the states: 1.Always go with the choice that scares you the most, because that’s the one that is going to help you grow. 2.Gratitude and a positive mindset can change your life. 3.It is okay to ask for help. 4.Everything works out exactly how and when it is supposed to. 5.Be patient with yourself and your growth, knowing that good things take time. 6.Not all classrooms have four walls. 7.Turn your pain into your power. You are a survivor setting the world on fire with your truth. You never know who needs your light, your warmth and courage. 8.Forgive others, not because they deserve forgiveness, but because you deserve peace. You have to forgive yourself too, in order to be able to move on. 9.You are stronger and more resilient than you think. Keep going! 10.Always look for the positive in every situation. STOP SCROLLING AND READ THIS CAPTION: My ex husband called me fat and stopped being intimate. I weighed 10 pounds less than in this picture. Throughout my marriage my ex husband stripped me of my self confidence, day by day. Gas lighting and emotional abuse are often used by abusers. He told me that I was fat, and that I needed to loose weight or he would leave me. He said “I don’t want to sleep with that. No one would want to.” I believed him. I believed him that I was fat. I believed him that he would leave me. I believed him that no one would want me. I wanted to please my husband. I downloaded a calorie tracking app to help me loose weight. That’s also when I started waking up at 2am in the morning to go into the kitchen and binge eat while he was sleeping. When it was time to step on the scale he would get mad at why I didn’t loose any weight. After my marriage ended, I gained 35+ pounds within 4 months, because I was eating everything and started drinking. That’s when I was diagnosed being pre-diabetic. I started to make healthier food choices, quit drinking, and joined the gym (which I barely went to). I lost all weight I had gained mainly by changing my eating habits and by stopping to drink alcohol. I don’t believe in diets, I don’t believe in restricting yourself. I believe in being HEALTHY. I believe that WELL BALANCED NUTRITION IS THE KEY. Don’t ever let anyone tell you anything about your body. It’s YOUR BODY! Your body houses all your organs. Your body is keeping you alive. Hi friends, I’m Joëlle! 👋🏻 There are some new faces around here, so I thought I would re-introduce myself! 1.I was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany and then came to New Jersey in August 2010 as an AuPair. I intended to stay for only one year, but almost 10 years later I’m still here (anniversary post coming up).
