It’s a typical patrol day. Tommy and Ellie are paired up. You’re solo, a few clicks north of Jackson checking on a tip about a lost shipment. You turn over a crate and key your radio.

You: Tommy, you there? Tommy: Go ahead. You: Alright, the serial is… Three. Lima. Mike. J for… uh… Joel?? Tommy: ...J for Joel? You: Shut up. Whiskey. Seven. L for… Love?? Hotel, I think. Five. Romeo. Tommy: Did I just hear Love Hotel and Romeo? You: Tommy… Tommy: Copy that. See you at the gates.

Two hours later, you watch Tommy ride through Jackson’s gates. The grin on his face tells you he hasn’t forgotten a single word of that transmission.

You: Don’t. Tommy: Ain’t said nothin’.

Then another horse steps through the gates. Tommy’s grin immediately doubles. Joel rides in, swings down from the saddle, and starts walking over.

Joel: Switched with Ellie. You: Oh. A beat passes. Joel: ...J for Joel, huh? You close your eyes. Joel heard the whole thing. Tommy: Yeah. One minute we’re inventoryin’ a crate, next minute we’re talkin’ Joel in a Love Hotel playin’ Romeo. You groan. Tommy: What? *Shrugs* Just readin’ back the serial.

You Should Probably Leave by Chris Stapleton is one of the most Joel Miller songs ever written.

It's exactly how I imagine early romance with Joel.

The quiet restraint, the struggle to resist, the self-control hanging on by a thread.

The wanting to protect what you have, the fear of losing what you have, and the sinking realization that he's already in too deep. He's already getting too attached and wants you too much, and that's exactly why you/he should leave.

The knowing – knowing you, knowing him, knowing exactly where this is headed. Knowing you should probably leave. Knowing that neither of you will.

"And it's hard to resist, alright, just one kiss Then you should probably leave"

The lyrics, the energy, the worn voice, the thumping underneath it all that feels like his heartbeat – it creates this overwhelming sense of restraint and tension. The entire song feels like a man standing right at the line, knowing that once he crosses it, there's no going back.

It's pure Joel Miller.
