The Music or The Misery?: Episode 2 “I Wonder”
Have you ever felt like you were just watching some years happen? . You’re there and you’re enjoying it but you’re watching the puzzle pieces of life come together and you can only say to yourself “Okay, this is life now. Awesome!” That’s how 2007 was for me.
I began 2007 just having worked my third Christmas at the House That Sam Built. Starting out the year working an overnight project for two weeks, I left that project a day early to take a weekend trip to Denver. I spent most of the weekend on my room at the Motel 6, listening to music and watching 90’s high school rom coms on TV. I went to see a concert, my primary reason for the trip, and made my way home. The trip itself wasn’t anything out of the ordinary for me but something about the drive home felt different.
I feel like I could write infinitely about how incredible 2007 would end up being for me.
Recently listening to one of the “This week in…” throwback countdowns, where they revisit the top songs from that particular week from a random year. This particular episode was from the country air play charts, that week in 2007.
I began one of my greatest life adventures in 2007 at the Western Kansas Broadcast Center. I was working part time weekend shifts on a radio station that I had grown up listening to. 19 years later, I was sitting in an office in that same building listening to throwback countdown full of songs I was playing on the radio.
The memories of that time hit me in a different way. I remembered spending time in a one bedroom house with a “1/2” address that was located behind another house. It had hardwood floors in the kitchen, dining area and living room. I remembered trying to fight the summer heat with two window AC units. Spending days off doing laundry at the laundromat. Working retail shifts and spending as much time as possible working at the radio station. On air shifts, events, learning radio.
So many of the songs from that summer bring back a memory and make me smile. But as “I Wonder” by Kellie Pickler played on that countdown, I thought of my family. How this part time job I applied for on a whim was as exciting for them as it was for me. I was working only weekend hours, but I would have to tell them when I was working. My parents, my siblings, even some of my extended family. They all wanted to listen to me when I was at work. I was so new at it, I can’t imagine it was great radio, but they were proud and wanted to hear it. It probably didn’t hurt that I would sneak songs on for them and give them the best shout out I could think of at the time.
I thought about how proud they were proud of me. And it clicked, 19 years later. Yes, I was doing something that I was loved doing, and I was making a few extra dollars doing it. It wasn’t much, but my family was so excited and proud of me for doing even just that. There’s something to be said for spending the first bit of your 20’s feeling like you’ve disappointed your family, only to have the puzzle pieces of life fall exactly into place, and finally feel the acceptance and understanding that you had longed for.
My life after the summer of 2007 has been full of awesome experiences and so many great moments and memories. But in 2026, I really needed to have that moment to reminisce and think about the 27 year old at the beginning of a new adventure, who was happy to feel like he was making his family proud by just making a few extra dollars on the weekend.
The Music or The Misery?
Episode 1: “I Wish You’d Stay”
I first heard “I Wish You’d Stay” by Brad Paisley on a televised performance sometime in 2001 or 2002. I watched the performance once. One listen to the song and that’s it. I didn’t think about the song again until February 2004.
Perhaps this performance?
She came home and walked in the door carrying a stack of boxes from work. “I’m moving out.” was all she said to me.
One week later, there was a chill in the air from the last days of winter mixing with the warmth from the sun of an upcoming spring. I knew this day was coming. I had burned some sad break up songs on a CD. I had received some Shure E2c earphones from her for Christmas. My headphone cable was ran down the back of my shirt, plugged into my Sony portable CD player, which was in my back pocket. The electronic skip protection working overtime. "I left a map on your front seat just in case you lose your way But don't worry, once you reach Sallisaw it's all interstate"
She was moving out and I was helping her carry her boxes of her stuff from the car. Up the drive way. Through the garage. Into her new room in her house with her new roommate. I was trying to be helpful. I was trying to be supportive and cooperative in a process that I didn’t understand and didn’t want. Anything to save the life that I left my hometown to build; a life that I didn’t want to lose.
"I figure right about sundown you'll be in west Tennessee And by then, maybe I'll understand why you had to leave"
The whole time, I was feeling every word of this song just as much as I was every shiver in my body that came with every tear that I was fighting back. No matter how hard I dug my heels in, life had decided the path it wanted to take. It was in motion, and nothing could stop the forward momentum.
"I know that you've done some changin' And I know there's no changin' your mind Yes I know... we’ve been through this a thousand times"
After we were finished unloading her boxes, I went home to a less full apartment. I wasn’t tired, even though I hadn’t slept in. I had no appetite, even though I could not recall when in the past few days I had been hungry enough to consume my last real meal.
The evening air started to get a little colder around me in the apartment. I just had some music, my tears, a notebook full of poorly timed self reflections, and an inescapable urge to call her a hundred times and plead my case.
"I'm sorry for still holdin’ on. I'll try to let go and I'll try to be strong and I’ll wish you the best and I wish you nothing less than every thing you've ever dreamed of And I hope that you find love along the way But most of all... I wish you'd stay"

Another Picture I Never Posted: Me with Tenille Townes after her show at The Bottleneck. May 16, 2024. #tbt
The first DM I received from Bryan Keeling was in 2008 on MySpace. As a big fan of his drumming and of Shooter Jennings and the .357’s, I was just happy that he approved my friend request.
We never met in person, but through the years we were connected on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tik Tok. From time to time, we would chat about life and music, and I would send him random messages when I was listening to “Higher”, a song he co-wrote for the third Shooter Jennings album.
Bryan lost his battle with cancer this week. Thank you, Bryan, for your music and for your kindness in taking time over the years to chat.
A Picture I Never Posted: On April 4, 2024, Tiffany was scheduled to perform at West Ridge Mall in Topeka. I decided to take my vinyl copy of her debut album, just in case I were lucky enough to meet her and get it signed. After the performance, I was waiting with my record and chatting with my friend Bobby Hapgood and a member of the concert security staff.
After a short wait, another member of the security staff comes over by us and says “Where’s the guy with the picture?” Bobby and I were escorted back to a management office in hallways behind the food court that was being used as a green room for Tiffany.
Tiffany greeted me with a hug, signed my record, and posed for a photo with me. My just in case became something way beyond I had imagined.
Looks like I’ll be writing actual posts here now that Instagram doesn’t auto post my updates here anymore.
Just hangin’ on the couch, listening to music with Elizabeth McMuffin.
