Test piece using double-sided tape to attach the leatherette to my skirting board/dado rail frame. Looks great here, but in 30 mins the tape had given up and the leatherette puffed back out of the grooves of the moulding. It wasn’t great quality tape, and I think with better stuff it would work. Only problem is I could end up spending 70 euro on tape...Will have to do some tests to see if I can find an adhesive that won’t break the bank, but will stick...think it will look good though...
Alarming shrinkage on contact with PVA glue...the section to the right was stuck down to the back board, and shrunk this much in a matter of minutes. Battled all afternoon with getting the other sections to shrink equally, and keeping the internal joints from opening up, before pinning the edges in place and leaving a stack of upturned tables, chairs, plinths, and anything else I could find on top of the print overnight.
Next day found the print not too bad - will need a few tweaks here and there, a little bit of re-sticking, but overall the effect is pretty good...
Degree Show Proposal
I would to like to submit a request to use the Octagonal Room for my degree show installation. At present, I envisage this will consist of a large 2-D artwork, a video projection piece with sound, a vitrine or display case, and a string ensemble.
A black leatherette-framed 6’ x 6’ print of a Judas Priest album cover would be mounted to the wall, illuminated by a single spotlight (to counter the necessarily low light), whilst my proposed video piece is projected on to another. My actual copy of the Judas Priest album would be displayed as a relic in a vitrine or similar.
A string ensemble would play in the space (accompanying the video) at intervals during the opening day of the show.
Given the subject matter, presentation and large scale of the print, I don’t believe it would function properly if hung in a low-ceilinged, bare-walled studio space or corridor. The architectural features of the Octagonal Room, on the other hand, would be invaluable in accentuating the quasi-gothic, historical quality of the artwork, not to mention affording an extremely favorable acoustic environment for the string ensemble.
The closed nature of the room would also contain the sound of the video piece (and the live music), negating any requirement for the use of headphones, which I feel would not be at all appropriate for the work. Having utilised this space for my assessment piece last semester, I know that it is also highly suitable for projection.
Details of the proposed installation:
· Two-dimensional artwork (6’ x 6’) mounted to the wall, with spotlight
· Projector, media player, plinth, extension cables
· Vitrine/display case
· Speakers, amplifier, extension cables
· String ensemble, instruments.
Had been considering the space outside the Church Gallery as a possible site for my degree show installation (nice architectural features, perhaps a good spot for musicians), but a test session projecting has shown that it is just way too bright. Also, I hadn’t considered the sheer footfall on the opening, and the fire regs etc which would find me pushed right back into the corner.
Took the projector in to the Octagonal Room, and tried out the wall and also a small alcove as potential screening areas. The coving and plaster work in this space is ideal for my work, as is its self-contained nature. Definitely have to submit a request to use it again in my initial proposal...just can’t see a better option given the nature of my work
Grace Weir: 3 different nights, recurring exhibition at IMMA
.
Just a few lines to acknowledge the influence of the fascinating artist’s talk given by visiting lecturer Grace Weir last month. Weir’s practice seamlessly blurs the lines between physics, astronomy, philosophy, history, and photography.
The film piece ‘A Reflection on Light’ perfectly encapsulates this ability to operate within multiple disciplines simultaneously. Sinuous steady-cam cinematography, subtle temporal shifts, historical footnotes, cubism, and theoretical physics combine to create a deeply poetic narrative which defies categorization.
Weir’s eloquent discourse on relativity, how time is not a constant, but rather a dynamic and elastic entity, her relationship with photography and film, and her overtly intellectual approach to art practice have given me much to think about.
