I find it super interesting that Sam decides not only to keep Higgs' mask, but he purposely keeps it next to other belongings of heavy importance to him.

Could be argued it's just a trophy or a keepsake, but I'd have to disagree because if it were just some object not close to his heart, it wouldn't even be around. Everything Sam surrounds himself with is vital to what he's learned/grown to love (the camera capturing moments with his found-family, the flowers to show new beginnings and the reassurance of life).

I think Sam, even in the end, had a sliver of hope that even someone like Higgs could be redeemed, and though that redemption was never done, he might even blame himself for not trying to understand and now, the least he could do is remember.
