This is probably a scenario where the conclusion is easier to deduce, but I wanted to know your opinion: how do you think SBR would have ended if Johnny had died instead? (whether by sacrificing himself so Gyro could be “revived” or simply by dying by Valentine’s hands instead of Gyro)
honestly? i think gyro would have just gone back to italy. i think it would have been the exact same ending. i think, since we’ve seen gyro crash the hell out about the lives of people he didnt know, he’d probably have a different response to johnny’s death. i think after the initial devastation, he’d shut down a lot emotionally. i will maintain that he was completely ready to die in the fight with valentine, so keeping his life probably felt shocking and empty, especially with the person he worked so hard to mentor and protect gone.
i definitely think it’d be harder for him to make jokes and all that, i think upon seeing his family again his father’d be a lot less rough on him, because he doesn’t sense as much of a rebellion from his eldest anymore. he’d be satisfied that gyro’s time in the states had resulted in a new work ethic. gyro keeps his path, his lesson 5, he now doesn’t waver in decision making, and his father leaves him alone. his siblings definitely notice a change too, he does still laugh and joke and treat them normally as possible, but (in a non-romantic reading of sbr) he seems like he’s mourning one of them at the same time. it’s confusing, becuase theyre all happy to have him back.
i think we get a begrudging scene with lucy, i think we get a goodbye and a thank you from steel, i think gyro sits with johnny’s coffin until george comes to take it. gyro thinks of saying something but leaves without a word, because he knows johnny wasn’t fond of him, but also knows there’s no use arguing over the coffin. i think george, for his part, is definitely fucking devastated that his youngest is now gone as well, especially when he had come all the way to ask forgiveness. i think he stays in regret for the rest of his life.
gyro leaves on the same boat that johnny would have, we have the flashback panels of their journey together, he holds johnny’s waterlogged notebook in his hand (idk what other personal items johnny would even have). i dont think there’s a smile. he does have a corpse, in a box, but it’s for the vatican. the reason johnny was at peace is because he gained a lot of purpose. ‘lost a friend, but kept the memory.’ (rocky mountain high). he was below zero, rock bottom, and the memories and knowledge he gained became everything to him. gyro gains his independence, but loses the only person he’s been able to truly be himself around, a real friend. while johnny had found a new life and source of meaning, gyro has to go back to his old life. thats not enough to smile about.
ummm ok yeah i thought abt this for a while thats why it took me so long. thanks for reading and thank u for the… devastating ask. its just such a lose lose 😭 honestly i think its better that gyro dies (WHAT IF THEY JUST BOTH LIVEDDDDD), that was the right choice, its an equivalent exchange for johnny. since sugar mountain it was either gyro or his mobility. oh well.
