My new work for my degree show.

'#SELFIE'

My work deals with social media and self-portraits or now commonly known as ‘selfies’ asking the question if social media has made women more narcissistic and obsessed with the exterior. The fantasy of social media has allowed a platform for women to post repetitive self-portraits which are sometimes not even reminiscent of one’s true identity creating in turn a new abstract entity in terms of self portraits. Collecting and building a catalogue of repetitive images of various people from the new social media site ‘Instagram’ Using the layouts of the social media site and including the comments, likes and titles each person has alongside their images. The use of lexicon within the social networking site links together my plan of showing this new way of not only posting self-portraits but how one now communicates with one and other through the sites. The use of hash tags within the images and how the text links with image and creates a whole new context. The way in which one creates the ‘selfie’ images derives from the idealised notion and the aspiration to look like beautiful iconic women placed in Hollywood and it has been something that has threaded through various generations the ideal beauty and the stereotype these icons possessed depicted a look which show perfection in the form of beauty outward and made women obsessed with looking like these ‘beautiful’ women who are presented as image ideals of perfected feminine beauty. The ‘selfie’ allows women to have control over their portrait and it allows a new self-adjudicated pose without anxiety of seeing an unflattering image of one’s self posted online allowing a vision of glamour and Hollywood in the comfort of one’s very one bedroom.
