Pairing: John Shelby x Reader
Warning(s): language???? idk this is the language I use on the reg
āComing for a drink tonight, (Y/N)?ā John Shelby asked, leaning over your desk.
āAre you sure you can keep up, Johnny boy?ā You flirted. You were known for your high alcohol tolerance and had the tendency to out-drink whoever it was you were out with.
āNo, Iām not. C'mon, itāll be a laugh,ā John winked. You had to admit, youād always fancied him quite a lot.
āYou tryinā to get me drunk, Shelby?ā You asked, ābecause it wonāt work; youāll be on your arse long before I am,ā you smirked. You enjoyed the flirty banter you shared with John, although you never thought anything of it. Thatās not to say no one else did: most of the staff at Shelby Brothers Ltd had a bet on when you would finally get together.
āI donāt doubt it,ā John chuckled, taking one of your hands and casually tucking a stray hair behind your ear with his spare hand. āIāll meet you here at five. Thatās when your shift ends, right?ā
You nodded, āYeah, but I need to go home and get changed first.ā
āThatās okay, Iāll tag along and help you,ā he winked and sauntered off towards Tommyās office. Your face flushed a deep shade of red. You looked back at your desk and tried to concentrate on your work. You didnāt see John pause in the doorway and gaze back at you, biting his lip.
āReady, (Y/N)?ā John asked, lighting a cigarette as he came to your desk. You were the last of the employees to leave, as usual.
āYeah, one moment, I just have to take this paperwork to Tommy.ā You gripped the pile of papers and flounced to Tommyās office, subtly swinging your hips because you could feel Johnās eyes on you. āIāve got the paperwork for next weekās derby here for you, Tommy,ā you knocked on his open door, giving your boss a warm smile. You had grown up with the Shelby boys as you lived next door to them.
āThanks, (Y/N), thatās lovely,ā he replied, taking them from you, āYou and John going out tonight?ā He asked. You nodded politely, a slight, pink blush rising to your cheeks at the thought of John. āDonāt let him get too drunk, alright? You know what heās like.ā Tommy gave you a quick hug as he whispered so John couldnāt hear him.
You pecked him lightly on the cheek, āWill do, Boss, Iāll have him home by midnight.ā You gave him a mock salute and bounced back to John, grabbing his hand and pulling him along with you. Tommy beamed after you, chuckling quietly to himself about the fact that neither of you had yet realised that you were in love.
āThis one?ā You asked, holding a red dress up to your body as John sat on your bed and judged.
āToo much cleavage.ā John warned. You threw the dress on your bed next to him, on top of a steadily growing pile of rejected outfits.
āHow about this one?ā You suggested. It was a blue dress down to the knee.
āToo much leg.ā John sighed.
āC'mon John, youāre meant to be my wingman.ā You cried, exasperated.
āIām not going to help you get laid, if thatās what youāre asking.ā John chuckled, waggling his eyebrows.
āHey, Iām a single woman. I can shop around. Be a good friend and help me out.ā You giggled. John laughed it off but it felt like you had stabbed him. Friend.
āFine, okay, wear that one.ā John crossed his arms over his chest, and left you to get dressed.
āThat blokeās been staring at you for the past 20 minutes,ā John whispered in your ear as you both sat by the bar.
āNot interested.ā You sighed, inconspicuously looking over your shoulder towards the perpetrator. At this point, you were both starting to get slightly tipsy - more John than you, but you were both well on your way to being drunk.
āIāll sort it.ā John winked, grinned his cheeky smile, and leaned towards you and ever so gently kissed your neck. He looked back to the booth that the man was sitting in, āthere, fixed.ā He smiled.
āWhat was that about?ā You questioned, your cheeks flushing a deep scarlet.
āHeās not looking anymore.ā John flashed you a smirk.
āCome on, Iāll get another round.ā You swiftly changed the subject, as John downed the remainder of his drink in one gulp.
You awoke in the morning to the sound of John pottering about in your kitchen. He had slept in your bed last night, nothing happened, he was just very drunk and he didnāt want you to walk home on your own.
You hopped out of bed and pulled a thin robe over your nightgown, quickly padding to the kitchen. You found John sitting at your kitchen table reading a newspaper, a cup of tea opposite him ready for you.
āAbout last night,ā John started, setting his paper down on the table, āNothing happened, right? I mean, between us. Because I woke up in your bed this morning and we were both half dressed.ā
āNothing happened. You wouldnāt let me walk home alone but you were too out of it to get back to yours so I let you kip āere. No big deal.ā You stared hard at your tea, pretending this conversation wasnāt slightly embarrassing you.
āOh, right. Thatās⦠good. Yeah, good,ā John suddenly felt uncomfortable, āIād best be off to work. Are you coming in today?ā
āYeah, Iāll be there in a bit,ā you replied as he got up, ābye, John,ā you called as he left.
Later that morning, you were sitting at your desk when Tommy piled a huge amount of work in front of you.
āNot too hungover to work through this lot, eh (Y/N)?ā He asked.
āMe, hungover? Never, Tommy,ā you giggled, āIām just popping to see if anyoneās got a spare ciggie first though.ā Tommy nodded and went back to his office as you wandered off in search of a smoke.
On the way back to your desk, you saw Tommy, John and Arthur whispering excitedly amongst themselves, and you could just make out what John was saying.
āSheās good laugh, and beautiful too. I donāt remember half the night, but I woke up in her bed this morning. Honestly, boys, I think Iām falling in love with (Y/N),ā he grinned. You gasped, surprised. You would have never have guessed John liked you. Of course, you liked him that way and you had always been close friends.
The men turned to look at you and Johnās face turned bright red. Tommy and Arthur left the two of you alone. āYou clearly werenāt meant to hear that,ā John chuckled awkwardly.
āIām glad I did,ā you smiled sheepishly, āI think Iām falling for you too, Johnnie boy.ā
āWhenās the wedding?ā You heard Arthur call down the corridor.
āWhat makes you think youād be invited, you cocky shit?ā You retorted. The lads chuckled, they had always treated you as one of their own.
āI clearly fell for the right woman,ā John grinned, throwing his arm around your shoulder and planting a kiss on your cheek.
āAlright, enough fuckinā around, Iāve gotta get back to work,ā you smirked, flouncing towards your workspace. You could already tell this was going to be the start of a beautiful relationship.
