Went to new Dublin tonight. Then we drove around Dublin and Powell looking at Christmas lights. The Lucy Depp Park people did a great job again. These pictures don’t do it justice. And the kind people who do those lights accept donations for Peace for Paws. Fun night!!Ldplights.com (at Lucy Depp Park Light Show) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5eSKwsg0D-w0H5ZRlSLwqT8OKg2AhE99G7k8Q0/?igshid=1hlicrwbmz6rq

My bourbon drinking friends love this place. I can see why. Genti, owner of Opa, says he has more than 1300 bottles. Some of them are rare. But I am more impressed by the kopanisti. Yummy!!! You all have to visit Opa in downtown Delaware, Ohio. It’s delicious! #opa @opagrillandtavern (at OPA Grill and Tavern) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5GyeLYAszcoGVKN7NVH5nlFKlt8exd-IHF11I0/?igshid=lp9sgxr9gj3

I've been busy lately but this morning, I took some time to read something I've wanted to read for more than a week now. The second part of the report from the U.S. Senate's Select Committee on Intelligence is out and it is one of the most disturbing things I've read lately.
According to the report, when two Russian operatives who had been involved in an elaborate effort to create and disseminate fake news learned the outcome of the 2016 presidential election, they uncorked a tiny bottle of champagne, took a sip and said in unison: "We made America great." That reference on page 34 of the report is not merely a toast to celebrate the outcome of the election. While this document shows Russian operatives pursued a complex plan that, in the end, helped to get President Trump in office, the operatives were celebrating that outcome as a sign that their manipulation was paying off.
The report outlines a strategy, based largely on data of social media users, to disseminate propaganda through innocuous content designed to appeal to individual voters. It says Keyboard warriors achieved that by masquerading as Americans who readers would be inclined to trust. Everyone knows that now, more than ever, Americans live in echo chambers. Americans tend to spend the vast majority of their time with people who are like them (same religion, same likes/dislikes, same social norms, the same interest in hobbies and so on). This report says the Russians are using data based on those factors to tailor messages that result in distrust of the U.S. government. It details how the messages are designed to stoke dislike, and sometimes even hatred. Instead of marching into the U.S. with tanks and guns, the report says Russian operatives are using keyboards and analytics to sow distrust, create division and weaken our government by pitting people against each other. In essence, it claims agents of Russia are extracting joy by creating that consternation. The report says operatives behind these efforts are inserting subtle messages in the media you select. For example, on page 33, this report explains how operatives used a Facebook group that appealed to Christians. The fake group, called "The Army of Jesus," is believed to have used its postings to make readers distrust Hillary Clinton. And it explains the operatives didn't limit their campaign to Christians. They reportedly also inserted misleading messages into posts about sports (the kneeling controversy was part of it), gender, race and even in recipes on Pinterest. All of us have been targeted with messages designed to dupe us and make us paranoid in one way or another. This report says Russian operatives capitalized on those triggers as part of a big plan to weaken our nation. This reads like a Dystopian drama but it is a real report, generated for our government leaders. https://www.intelligence.senate.gov/sites/default/files/documents/Report_Volume2.pdf
One final thought. Reporters work hard to call out lies when we see them. The problem is it sometimes feels like you are trying to drink water from a firehose. Fewer newspaper subscriptions and the increased profit-making, cost-cutting demands on media operations have resulted in smaller newsrooms and fewer reporters. There are fewer reporters to do the big investigations these days. There are more demands on the time and efforts of news reporters. We will keep trying to do what we can but there is no possible way reporters can fact check everything. Just think of it as your civic duty to be a fact-checker on everything you read, hear or view.

Had a great time last night at the Benefit in the Barn. The Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra and Olentangy Liberty Varsity Chorale were wonderful. We also enjoyed the company of some good friends. The event raised $67,000 for the Delaware County Hunger Alliance and the Hope Center in Union County. https://www.instagram.com/p/B1Tx9dBA2uBnNrrZ9o2TOQVlLXtlV-acMCKU8c0/?igshid=1qemei1ar4qxb
Tomorrow is the biggest day of @saraheingles life. We will officially be gaining another son. I’m so happy for them. I hope I don’t cry like I did when the kids gave us these personalized picture frames at the rehearsal dinner tonight but I probably will. #toosentimental https://www.instagram.com/p/B0r_Uo0gT9HsoUmKKBs8kD5zn6leoTeeyOvDx00/?igshid=jvf0qac8gdm4
Just a few days ago, we were doing Columbus On The Record with Jim Siegel aka @phrontpage. We almost forgot to take a group picture but we all stayed a minute later to catch this one after the show.
