So before I comment on this, yes, I ship MaxxRiki but, the purpose of my post isn’t to tell people “You’re wrong—Ship them 🗣️‼️‼️”. It’s to point out that Rikiel is, in fact, neither ‘baby-girl uwu’ nor ‘nice’ and I think it’s an ongoing issue in fandom spaces to assume that characters with mental illnesses are inherently ‘weak-coded’, so to speak.
So I’m gonna nerd out real hard for a second because Rikiel is my most favorite character, especially because I really connect with his journey through handling anxiety. I don’t know if you’ve ever had an anxiety disorder, but that shit is rough. It can halt your life pretty abruptly and the everyday, average person and the government doesn’t give a shit and I think Araki handled that pretty well with how he made Rikiel react when he first is introduced.
He explains it like how it happens for a lot of people: One day, it just happened. And ever since that day, the fear he felt was so frightening that he’s been afraid to ever feel that level of fear again, so what happens? He can’t live a normal life. He can’t drive. He couldn’t finish school. And we can surmise he probably struggled ever keeping a job too. Anxiety can affect your sleep and your eating habits—it can throw off a lot of what is supposed to be normal and keeps you from functioning. It can be so disheartening and leave you despairing for what life could’ve been.
Now, I love how he’s portrayed as a villain. The thing about anxiety is that once you get out of the headspace that “this is all it will ever be”, and really understand & find things to look forward to and remind yourself that you have control, the anxiety is so much more manageable. Pucci, and the thought of DIO, ends up being that for a despairing Rikiel. The priest takes advantage of this troubled youth because his ‘DIO’s lineage’ speech ends up being something that Rikiel can mentally latch onto and take inspiration from. Take strength from.
And he fights like he means it. He doesn’t shy away from battle, and only worries about what anyone in a fight would worry about: will I lose? How can I keep from losing? What’s their weak-point?
Rikiel isn’t nice, he’s a mean motherfucker. He toys with them once he has them in his grasp, and even admits that he won’t kill them outright. He plans to torture—he plans to make them feel the pain. It comes off as a little vengeful. He attacks Jolyne and refuses to back down, even as he’s hurting himself. He makes fun of and targets a child. He turns Ermes into his puppet.
It’s these panels that I can tell people took a look at and went, “Aww, baby 🥺”, which yes, I gotta say it’s annoying. If you really look at what’s happening, it’s a guy in complete distress who’s tired of this always happening and never getting an answer for why it’s happening. But he doesn’t shy away, he doesn’t curl up and get submissive, he doesn’t go quiet and mumble little cute whispers to himself or whimper like an adolescent, he doesn’t do what 90% of the fandom writes and perceives that he does—he makes noise. He screams. He makes himself known and he complains about it outright. This doesn’t make him weak; he’s strong for that, alone.
No hate to OP and this commentary definitely isn’t about that post alone lol There is just a lot I see in the JJBA fandom about Rikiel being watered down to “🥺👉👈 I’m scared!” and I just want to give my two-cents about my fav because, as someone with anxiety, I don’t like the real-life perception that anxiety = weakness. It’s an awful thing to live through and people who struggle with it are so, so strong beyond what can be physically seen.
Hopefully this post makes sense; I wrote it super fast on my phone and didn’t proofread :D woops
