As of the time of writing, I am sipping coffee at Tim Hortons in Queen’s Arcade, Cardiff while enjoying my Timbits. This seemingly common occurrence every time I am in Cardiff has a twist today.
A few hours from now, I am picking up my parents in Heathrow in preparation for graduation.
The actual idea of going through the graduation ceremony has not fully hit me until now. Imagine, being around USW from September 2016 to December 2017, doing almost the same things that one does from lunch at Stilts in Treforest, to catching a bus to Glyntaff, or meeting in Cardiff, or going to the Newport campus for some special reason. This routine that I described has been me for the longest of times.
Visiting relatives or friends change the dynamic. Crazy enough, all of my friends in the UK outside of Wales never have visited this part of the world. From London to Aberdeen, Manchester to Brighton, multiple messages of ‘Come to Cardiff!’ or ‘Come to South Wales’ have only been met with promises that have yet to be fulfilled. To give more accuracy, only two people from outside Wales have ever visited me. One, because he was a friend of a friend in Manila making it not really a friend of sorts until he reached Cardiff. The other was my principal in elementary school, but then he was there on special business.
With my parents coming here, it changes things because I could do more things that I want to do with those who visit me.
I hope, that by them being here, I could finally change my perception from a student of USW to a graduate of USW. Visits from friends are a heartwarmer for me, and with their visit, I could hope for future visits from my friends.
