it was a odd feeling, he knows this, fingers absently scratching sikyung's scalp. it's odd to the him of a year ago, to be like this with someone else. sikyung was a constant burning flame but somehow jonathan never got burned. he would put his hand right on the fire and it would wrap around him but never harm. it was hard to be scared of the fire when it welcomed you without hesitation. it's a part of why he can act like this, huffing at the pet name sikyung tended to use often with him.
he allows the contact as their fingers intertwine despite the petulant expression on his face. "stop with the b-word, people can hear you." the complaint will fall on deaf ears, especially due to them being nearly alone in their part on the quad, but it leaves him anyway. a childish 'hey!' escapes him when the device is taken away, reaching for it with a frown.
"...sap." it's fond as he says it, the smallest of smiles coming to his face despite the annoyance that was still there. sikyung had been like that for a while now; sincere and honest in his feelings with jonathan, expressing more emotions without hesitation. he sometimes feels special because of it. especially because he knows sikyung doesn't treat many others the same way. it's what causes him to hum and take another look at his violin case when sikyung agrees in a way that only he could.
"one song," he agrees tentatively, temporarily displacing sikyung and their hold to reach over to grab his case. the latches unlock and when it opened jonathan gave the violin a small smile. "hey there girl. sikyung wants to hear you." he picks up the instrument gently, the polished wood smiling back at him. he slips his hoodie off and folds it meticulously before placing it near sikyung—a place to rest his head. he needed space while playing, anxious if touched and unable to focus. he's on his knees, holding the violin like a baby, grasp delicate.
he carefully tucks his head onto the chinrest, bow in hand, and exhales deeply. he was no stranger to this, playing before a mini audience, sikyung one of the few who he had done so for since coming to lumera. it shows now, hands steady as he quickly tuned the instrument, lovingly twisting the pegs with gentle fingers.
then, he started to play. this song was one of his favorites to play, body settling as he let the music wash over him. the tune was sad and a bit haunting, something he had heard play from his grandmothers radio when he was still young. it had made him cry, he remembers now, lashes fluttering as he watched the bow move. the emotion welled up inside of him as he played through the piece, temporarily twelve again and playing to his grandmother in her room, feeling as if something was missing even if he wasn't alone.
he lingered with the violin in hand after the piece finished, bow faltering slightly, before taking a deep breath and moving it away. he's played different songs in front of sikyung before, standing in his room while the other man laid in his bed. juno would curl around his neck and he would play for his two person audience peacefully. this song was more personal, he realized with a slight furrow of the brow. he had wanted to set the mood with music, but it turned a bit melancholy, despite how he wanted something peaceful.
"still better than anything on spotify?" he hoped sikyung would ignore the tears that had started to gather at the corners of his eyes, putting the violin down into the case before quickly flicking the droplets away with his finger. "it was one of the first... "harder" songs i learned as a kid." there's a look on his face, he knows, a bit sad when he says it. "i... i always really liked that one..."
