Look at this amazing teacher showcased in the most recent Delta Arts Alliance newsletter! Full interview below! We caught up with Amanda Delperdang, the summer arts instructor for the week of July 17th (our last week of summer programming!), for a quick Q&A. Check out what she had to say! Q: This is your second summer teaching with the Delta Arts Alliance. How excited are you to be returning? A: On a scale of 1-10, I'm definitely a 10 in excitement. I love teaching at DAA. Q: Why is the Delta Arts Alliance important? A: DAA is important because it provides fun, motivational, and educational programs for kids in a rural area where access to the arts can be limited. Q: Why is arts education important? A: Arts education is important because it connects learning with life. So often kids learn something and forget it, sometimes it seems immediately after being taught! But art gives them the context and the experience that puts that knowledge in their heads as something important that needs to be remembered. Not only does it help with memory but the arts build critical thinking and problem solving skills vital for our kids' future jobs. Q: What can kids expect from your classes? A: My classes are going to cover a broad range of skills and subjects. Two of the classes are going to focus on the design process. The students will be presented with a challenge, like "what if we didn't have stairs?", and then we'll walk through a process of how to design a solution to that specific problem. This is called Design Thinking and Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon will be focused on this skill, but with different challenges so that each class is different. Tuesday afternoon, we'll be exploring the world of Abstract Expressionism. We're going to look at the art of Wassily Kandinsky and discuss his process and how the elements and principles of art can be used to express emotion. We'll then do as Kandinsky and paint our own abstract expressionist work while listening to different genres of music. Thursday morning, we'll be working with yarn as we explore how different cultures use fibers and patterns to express important aspects of their daily life.
Having a little fun working the primary elections today in Leland! Be sure to vote Mississippians in the primaries occurring today!

I've been helping the past few days getting materials together for the Winning the Race Conference at Delta State this coming Monday and Tuesday March 27th and 28th. Currently over 550 people are registered to attend! The conference provides opportunities to explore diversity and have discourse on race. Registration is available on site at the Bologna Performing Arts Center. More info available at www.deltastate.edu/winning-the-race
I enjoyed the opportunity last week to be on the floor of the Mississippi House of Representatives at the MS State Capitol with Rep. Abe Hudson. Looking forward to the next time I'm there!
Got a letter to the editor published today in The Leland Progress! #FullyFundMAEP #FightForMississippisChildren
I keep on seeing former students at political rallies! Our schools must be doing something right! I taught this wonderful student from Belzoni my first summer of teaching. I can see he's doing great things! If our students are fighting for their own education, we must fight with them! #FightForMississippisChildren #FullyFundMAEP
A Seat at the Table rally for public education at the MS Capitol. All Mississippians deserve to be part of the process to fund public schools. Mississippi children deserve the investment of education for their future! We must fully fund education! #FullyFundMAEP #FightForMississippisChildren (at Mississippi State Capitol)
