My face by my friend
I spent the better part of last year exploring western Canada and the United States in an RV, camping and hiking, largely offline. The experience was invaluably freeing; I learned a lot about the joys of minimalism, and the misery of excess. Along the way I took these photos about reconnecting with nature. More here.

Let down your guard
Life can be hard, building walls won't help To protect your heart, feelings won't be felt And you won't be held, 'cause they might let go Being snide by day, living cold as snow Shy away from affection and meanings ease away Lost control, lost collection, kept your breathing astray

Where did the love go?
On my way to a gig I was shooting at this evening, I began looking through some articles on the host's site. There was this one piece written about how much a guy loved Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory. It detailed how he first found it, how a friend wrote down the lyrics for him to make sure he didn't get them wrong, how the same friend had put it on a tape for him. He talked about what the songs were to him - the meanings and moments he got from them, the reasons they're timeless to him, and more. For the rest of my journey, I put the album on again. I tried to imagine the younger me - the guy who could've just as easily written this article - as I listened. And it came to me easily. Far easier than it has in a decade. The album flowed so quickly, so naturally. It felt so familiar, safe in it's place as one of my most listened to pieces of music. My journey seemed to speed by as the album rushed to conclusion - it's only 40 minutes, and I still had places to be so I put Meteora, the second one, on next. Memories came flooding back to me of excitedly travelling to things for the first time (I went to Brixton Academy alone for the first time, then Scotland & Wales, as well as Reading, Donnington, Download etc.) staying up late at night to book tickets to strange lands (like Miami, Hamburg, Ireland, Florida, New York, Paris, and more of Europe), waiting all night for demos and previews of new material, meeting fans before shows (I distinctly recall having friends I met on a message board or LiveJournal who were waiting in queues in Manchester, and running all over the place, full of energy and enthusiastic about life, dying to let people know that the Glasgow show had been fantastic, and the Manchester one could only be as good, if not better), and then meeting band for the first time, and several many other times afterwards... 2003, 13 years ago, an excitable 16/17 year old Jon finding himself on TV shows like Top of the Pops and CD:UK, travelling all over the UK, going to Miami, road tripping with new friends, International love, learning so much about humanity and it's people. Learning compassion, hosting parties, running around with a group I identified with. My point is, I really miss caring that much, and being that passionate about something as small as an album on the back of a bus on one lonely Geography trip. Maybe they were the very first stepping stone and all other bands would not live up to that excitement and that much chain reaction because the reactions are still happening. Earlier this evening, I thought I hadn't had a truly favourite musician since parting ways with my passion for them. But there's been close moments. New York knows what I'm talking about, and London thereafter. New York took my passion, and embraced and helped sculpt it into something more as a photographer and video producer, and London gave me the time to spend crafting both aspects in a comfortable lifestyle. I managed one band, until there was little more I could do for them, but that year was thoroughly enjoyable. Aside from my relationship, I don't think I've shared any real passion with the internet in a good few years, and I hope to rectify that. Because I love a lot of things. I just forget to tell you all that I do.
